Michigan opens as a 2.5 pt favorite over Nebraska

Submitted by g_reaper3 on

I think this is going to be a tough game.  We have struggled against top defenses.  Hopefully, Hoke continues his undefeated streak in the Big House.

Not sure what the all time record is against Nebraska but in the last 30 years or so we are 1-1 with the 85 team winning the Fiesta Bowl and the 05 team losing the Alamo Bowl.  Need to get this one.

Thoughts?

I'd like to take my wisdom from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's amazing, insightful album about challenges facing the blue collar working class.  My feelings on the game are best summed up in "Atlantic City":

"Now I've been looking for a win, but it's hard to find.  Down here it's just winners and losers and don't get caught on the wrong side of that line. I'm tired of coming out on the losing end.  So last night I talked to Denard and I told him to stop throwing interceptions."--Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Atlantic City, Nebraska, 1982.

I'm just hoping that UM gets the benefit of "home cooking" officiating that they have been playing against on the road this season. If the refs call the game fairly (read: cheat for UM because they are the home team) then UM should win this game by at least a TD.

Nebraska and UM are pretty similar teams: good running games and anemic passing games while UM (statistically, at least) has the better defense. Throw in the "home field" advantage and I like UM's chances in this game. UM wins 28-20.

"Home cooking" is just a part of the home field advantage. UM has gotten shafted on the road at MSU and Iowa due to home cooking officiating. Why would you not want UM to receive the same advantages those teams enjoyed? That would put UM on an uneven playing field IMO. Oddly, the only way things can be "fair" is if the officials cheat for every home team.

This is Michigan, and we win the right way.

That sounds really cheesy, but that's what it is. I really, really hate when either team wins due to officiating gaffes or "home cooking." Obviously, I get rage-ier when Michigan loses because of this, but I feel like I need a shower every time we catch a break from bad officiating.

Of course, looking at the "worst calls of the decade" article here generates animus towards refs in general, but I still prefer to win clean.

So if the home team typically gets 3 points, is this basically saying Vegas expects Nebraska to win?

Either way, should be a very close game.  I'm not sold on Martinez as a legit QB, andhis struggles throwing the ball even shame Denard's.  This feels like a game where Fitz vs. Berkhead will decide the outcome, as whoever can run the ball the best should be able to keep the other team on the ropes.  Nebraska's pass defense, though, does not scare me at all, so at least Denard or Devin will be able to move the ball through the air a bit if needed.

I like to think that on paper, M should just edge them out, but when have they played on the field like they do on paper this year? Only in fits and starts at best, including the entirety of the Minnesota game, but I don't think Nebraska has as much to say about who wins this game as Michigan does. It all depends on which Wolverine team shows up. That's what I hate about Michigan football the past 4 years. They've got the talent to beat anyone in the B1G. But they've also got a strange ability to lose to teams they shouldn't.

I have elements of my cornhusker family descending upon my homestead for this game.  One of them has asked me if I could figure out at which Ann Arbor bar Husker fans will likely be hanging out.

Is there some kind of cornstalk telegraph I am supposed to tap into?  Why does he think an Ann Arbor Wolverine is going to be able to figure that out better than him, living among 1.8 million Husker fans (approximately a third of which apparently are planning to drive here)?

Well, whatever, it's part of the hospitality I'm supposed to provide (apparently Zingerman's Roadhouse reservations are not enough).   If anyone has any ideas -- or similarly-intended Nebraska relatives -- I'm all ears.

I was off by three points last game, I said 28-14 Michigan. I think Michigan's D is really really hyped and rolling, they've constantly gotten better under mattison game to game. I beileve they will give Nebraska hell, hoke co will clean up the offense a little an we will win this game, 35-10.

Everyone who has beaten us has played their best football against us. Purdue played like they always do, and got massacred. Minnesota played badly and was flogged. Illinois got Zook'd and was eaten alive by Mike Martin. Coming to Ann Arbor from Lincoln is no easy task and we're 6-0 in the Big House this year. The home field advantage will be huge (a la SDSU but not as drastic).
