Michigan-Ohio State HOOPS Open Thread

Submitted by Tim on
I'm gonna open this bad boy up early, because I'm going to be out of commission later today. Unfortunately (or mercifully?) that means I won't have a chance to watch any of the game. Updates, commentary, whining, etc, can go in here.

I had to bitch about Michigan baseball umpires last night, breaking one of my more consistent lack of bitching rules (edit: baseball only, as that is my current job if the rain/snow would ever leave). At least I could slide the blame to players though as the umpire was fair and at least UL adjusted.

I'll be completely happy with today's game if Novak can elbow someone in the nuts like last year (or was it the face last year?)

makes me wonder why John Wall is such a shoo-in for the #1 pick. Wall looks like the next "guy who takes 30 shots a game but is OMG because he ends up with 27 per" whereas Turner looks like he actually makes his teammates around him quite a bit better. Not to mention he seems to have excellent shot selection also.

you're completely off-base on Wall. Turner may well go 1st but more because of what he brings than any detriment Wall has. He is a better pg prospect than DRose was and is a natural PG. If you watch kentucky play, Wall isn't a ball hog and has great court vision, a decent shot for a 19 year old, amazing athleticism and very very good defensive potential (not that he always plays with intensity and concentration yet but he can get there). Wall has almost everything you look for in a PG prospect and a lot of times people become enamored with players offensive games but Wall has all of that without much risk of being a defensive liability which is a rare combination. Also, you have to realize in terms of shooting percentages, its tough to compare a junior Turner with a freshman Wall. If Wall is right near Turner in the NPOY race, imagine how much better he'd be in two years. Wall will be amazing and if you think hes another Iverson, you just haven't been watching.

1. I never said Turner will be or even should be the #1 pick. I just don't see how Wall is so much better than him that any team that wins the lottery should just take Wall no questions asked. 2. Saying he's a better prospect than Derrick Rose is just an empty statement IMO. It sounds good, but where did you gather this idea? ESPN? Again, I am not saying Wall is not going to be a good or even great NBA player, I'm just not fully buying the hype. According to ESPN he could be better than Chris Paul. OK. 3. Wall is near Turner in the NPOY race because he plays for a big name team in a crappy conference. It shouldn't even be close. Kentucky has three lottery picks on its roster (maybe four depending on how Bledsoe works out). Turner's two best games came against their toughest opponent (Purdue) and outside of when Buford decides to play the Robin to his Batman it's almost a one-man show. He has OSU in the top-10 and in contention to win a much tougher conference. Not to mention he broke his back earlier this year. He's not padding his A/TO ratio against Rider and Hartford that's for sure. 4. Wall's defensive potential? Turner was already there last year and has only improved this year. He's a game changer on both sides of the floor. Also, it's not as if Turner is an eight year veteran. He's only two years older himself. Calling him Iverson would be overdoing it, but it's along those lines that I developed my train of thought. As far as Derrick Rose is concerned, you realize he has attempted over 1000 shots this season (top 10 in the NBA) and has a A/TO ratio of a little over two, which is inefficient for a starting PG. Watching Kentucky (yes, I really have), Calipari utilizes Wall in almost the exact same manner. I don't really see how they are that much different. Excuse me now while I shower after actually building a case of any kind for a Buckeye player.

if i didn't know any better, i'd think this was just an interteam scrimmage with the highlights they've been showing. I don't think they've shown a single Michigan highlight. It's just been all Lav breaking down how good Turner is, and how Lighty was on a final four team.

for them to play together all year long, but when cronin got hurt that was never going to happen... now if JB burned the redshirt on blake or morgan he could put both of them out there at the same time... but since he won't do that he can't afford his 2 big men to get into foul trouble at the same time...

Really hope that some of the big guys coming in next year can rebound. People point to this team's shooting woes all year, but truthfully you can't expect to win a game if your team is always 10 down on rebounds. Not to mention all of the easy points they give up below.
