Cosigned, though I wonder what shit would have been pulled from within. I'm not among those who believe there was a huge master plan conspiracy to screw RR, but I do think there were people who took opportunities when they presented themselves. Miles would have had to deal with it too, though he at least probably would have stamped it out better than Rich. And won faster, which would have eased the pressure. Ugh...no domination by Dantonio, maybe beat Tressel at least once more before he hit the bricks, no Hoke, ever...what could have been...

Disturbed with CW's comments as he's actually talked to Harbaugh and if he was still in for our coach I would think Miles would not be approached. He'd feel like "what am I doing this for if Harbaugh will get the job" and UM would feel the same.

could be read either way on this report.

I would think that Hackett is being derelict in his duties as an interim AD if he didn't reach out to Miles (or to other coaching candidates).

And while I strongly prefer Harbaugh to anyone else, there's quite a few coaching candidates out there who could do this job and fits certain criteria and Les Miles is one of them, easily.

A chronology of comments about Nick Saban taking the head coaching job at Alabama:

Nov. 27:
Saban: "When I was in college it was always about coming to the pros. This is the challenge I wanted. I had a good college job. Why would I have left that if I was going to be interested in other college jobs?

"I took this as a challenge. We certainly haven't seen this through and gotten where we want to go and finished the job here, so why would I be interested in something else?"

Dec. 5:
Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga (after giving Saban a vote of confidence): "I am completely sold on Nick Saban. I would admit we made a mistake if we did make a mistake, but I firmly believe in Nick Saban."

Dec. 7:
Saban: "I'm flattered that they may have been interested in me, but it never really progressed, because we just never let it progress."

Dec. 21:
Saban: "I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach. ... I don't control what people say. I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here."

Dec. 27:
Saban: "I'm just making a rule to never comment on something like that again because every time you comment on it, it just makes for another story. So I'm not going to comment on it five years from now, and I'm not going to comment on it next week."

Jan. 4:
Saban: "What I realized in the last two years is that we love college coaching because of the ability that it gives you to affect people, young people. ... If I knew that my heart was someplace else in what I wanted to do, I don't think it would be fair to the [Dolphins] organization if I stayed."
*********************************************
It took until Jan 4 with Saban.  And there was obviously tons of reason to doubt UA would every land him.  But they did.

Here's to hoping JH's heart is still with Bo and UM!!!!

What's with the hate for Miles?  He's a Michigan Man who can win.  Plus he's almost as entertaining as Steve Spurrier.  Seems like he'd be a good fit.

Because some people have gotten spoiled and fixated on one guy. I figured a decade of blergh interspersed with a couple mirage seasons would have cured this fanbase of thinking we're too good for a coach who has won a National Championship but who also, heaven forbid, has a few personality quirks, but I guess not. I swear there are some people here who won't get it until we put all our eggs in the Harbaugh basket, he declines, and we end up with Hoke 2.0.

I'll repeat what I said upthread: if Harbaugh doesn't want to come to Michigan, it won't be because of anything Michigan did or didn't do. It will be because Michigan's not in the NFL. It seems some think if we don't get him, it will be because Hackett screwed the pooch and needed to somehow "try harder". It won't be. The guy has his own ambitions, which might include things Michigan simply can't give him. To me, that's more than iffy enough to want to hedge and keep other options open, but apparently not to some.

That's right. We have to accept a moral loser! We have become a non-historic power with no money to spend on a coach. We barely have any top recruits, attention or resources to attract anyone really good. That seven years ago we got the top name who turned down Bama (RichRod) might as well have been a hundred years ago.

Personally i'm glad we've reached the point where we just neg the crap out of anyone that says anything negative about our chances with Harbaugh. Clearly reaching out the Les can only mean...

...if JH says no....and Patterson says no.....

then LESS MORALS it is!!!!

Lets get this announcement over with...bring Les home and get these rivalries back.

Everyone running a business knows that the best hiring approach is to offer one candidate, then wait as long as they want to take for a decision.  Then, when they decline, make a panic hire of a terrible candidate and close your business 6 months later when they steal all your widgets.  Sixty percent of the time, it works every time.  That said, I'd be fine with Les Miles.

It's crazy to think this means no from Harbaugh. But at the same time it's also pretty unlikely that a deal is "in place" as some reports have suggested if we are indeed still contacting multiple other established head coaches

like i've been saying the last few days: no news is good news regarding harbaugh

this, like the duke coach, is news

This whole process cracks me up.  We hear UM finally reached out to Les & half the board believes it's over with Harbaugh.  Relax, they're clearly doing a better job this time.  It can't be Dec 29 & we go all, "Oh shit who do we contact now?  From the outside looking in it seems Hackett is doing a kickass job so far.  Go Blue!

I would love Harbaugh too but I would equally crap my pants with delight if Les Miles was hired.  I bet a few Ohio State fans would crap their pants as well.

yep, it'd be a major pull for the big10.  and who know's, maybe les only has 5 years left in him, at that point harbaugh may have warn out his welcome in the NFL and it'l be time to head home.

why:   Who is worth having as a coach who would want to be known as our "second choice"?

[crickets]

We should "officially reach out" to 2 to 3 candidates who have expressed interest through back channels.   If Harbaugh gives Michigan a "no" through the same back channels, it saves his alma mater and him from embarrassment.  It also allows Michigan to proclaim that "we got the best available candidate".

Ths is a smart move by the AD and he knows it.

Harbaugh is coming to Michigan, unless he isn't, and Hackett isn't going to bet the future of Michigan football on one guy who is an acknowledged longshot to accept an offer.

How many in a row did they lose to OSU? We lost to App State. It was getting stale. And the coaches wouldn't open up the damn playbook. At the time this is why people wanted a change. All reasonable. His teams underperformed with the talent that he had.

I guess I still must be. Letting Carr retire gracefully was a good thing for Michigan to do. It's too bad he didn't have the grace to retire gracefully. This "Michigan reaches out to Les Miles" thread would not exist. He would already have been here.

But you deserve 3 or 4 for linking to Tiger Droppings...

Y'all think that we're crazy here at MGoBlog, I will never forget reading TD the night that Brandon met on the plane (apparently) with Miles (as more of a courtesy) than anything; LSU fans are so wonderfully crazy...I'm too lazy to pull up that particular thread but anyone who wants to take the time be my guess; it was HIL-arious.

I interpreted this as a gentle way of nudging JH without actually pressuring him very much into hurrying things along if he wants to come here.

That said, LM is a HELLUVA consolation prize.
