Michigan Offers Penn St. Commit, 2014 LB Jared Wangler

Submitted by Brandon Brown on
In the wake of offered LB's Jimmie Swain and Richard Yeargin committing to TCU and Notre Dame respetively and Purdue gaining a pledge from recently-eyed Drue Tranquill, the Michigan coaches acted quickly and offered current Penn St. commit Jared Wangler.  Most of us know the Wangler name as Jared's father is former Michigan signal caller Johnny Wangler.  Jared's older brother Jack will be a walk-on with the football team this fall, and I learned via Twitter that his sister will be a member of the basketball team at Michigan.  I was able to exchange a few texts with Jared and get a read for how he was feeling about the offer given all of the Maize and Blue in his family.

What's the Michigan offer do to your head and heart?

(Laughs) I mean it's definitely somethign I'm going to consider. I'm committed to Penn St. and I haven't made any decision yet. I'm going to talk it over with my family.

Coach O'Brien seems like a standup guy and PSU is pretty special, but your connection to Michigan is pretty unique wouldn't you say?

Yeah it really is unique.  That's what makes this such a tough decision.

Numerous family connections make Jared Wangler becoming a Wolverine seem like an inevitability. Wangler also happens to be best friends, basically brothers as he desribes, with Shane Morris, and I'm sure the two will talk about the possibility of playing together. Wangler answered me very quickly, openly, and quite honestly. That usually speaks volumes when it comes to gauging interest. I believe Wangler will be a Wolverine.

(from Gordon Berenson who posted it first:

I think this link is ($) but Wiltfong over at 247 has reported that Jared Wangler was offered by Michigan today. I don't know what that means in the recruiting tea leaves but I assume it means some other LB/S prospects are becoming less likely or the staff sees another scholarship becoming available. Probably safe to assume he's going to flip and commit to Michigan soon.

What does this mean? Let's speculate.)

What pupose does that swipe serve? Magnus offered an opinion, and if you don't agree then disagree. Or even, perhaps, say nothing? What does it even matter if you believe he coaches or not, who cares?

A bit of a bizarre offer.  We don't need a LB, and he's really not a Big Ten caliber safety.

You know the woman Jerry said that to is now playing Skylar on Breaking Bad.  Kind of weird because Bryan Cranston was also on Seinfeld as Tim Whatley, the regifting dentist who converts to Judaism purely for the jokes.

Two star who committed to Penn State without visiting?  Shall I trust Mattison / Hoke again on this one?

(Honest question, does he have some good intanglibles or what?)

If you can get a full ride, why walk on? For the "good of the University"? That's mildly insulting and unfair to the Wangler family.

Scholarship players get way more benefits. It's like asking a wealthy person "give me 100K, you won't miss it."

What I'd like to see....

Ferns: MIKE

Ferbush and Winovich: SAM, with Ferbush moonlighting at DE

Wangler: WILL

Based on what I read and his size, but after watching his film I think SAM is the best position for him. Unfortunately, I think SAM is the best position for all Michigan's LBs too. Ferns could potentially play any of the three, we'll see if Furbush sticks at MIKE, I like him more as a SAM or DE personally, and I think Winovich is a SAM as you get.
