Michigan offers 4* DB Chris Hawkins

Submitted by Moleskyn on

Michigan has offered California DB Chris Hawkins. TomVH did an interview and posted it on WN (LINK, $). He's on ESPN's top-150 watchlist, Rivals ranks him a 4*, #159 overall, and 24/7 ranks him a 4*, #211 overall. He's got offers from a bunch of schools, mostly left-coasters, including Stanford, Cal, UCLA, the Arizonas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Boise State, among others. He seemed pretty excited about the offer and indicated that he'd like to make it out to UM for a visit at some point. He says the coaches want him to play corner.

I noticed the other day that DT Eddie Vanderdoes is missing from the offer list.

He's a 4-star DE and #21 overall in Rivals' 250 http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Eddie-Vanderdoes-130591

He's a NR DT to Scout: http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=5824901

FWIW he's also on the ESPN 150 Watch List and a 4-star #45 overall in 24/7's top 247 for 2013

Not sure what it is, might be his big head or how mean he looks but I just want Eddie Vanderdoes on our squad. He just looks like a such a mean mean man I can't imagine how terrified opposing QB's would be with a senior Pipkins lined up alongside a junior Vanderdoes.

Plus he is from the mountains so you know he's a wild man.

It would be a lot easier to figure our needs at safety if I had an actual understanding of their independent roles.... Does Mattison want to run a traditional FS - SS (like Vada and Tripp!!!?);  Or two SS (like T. Gordon and Kovacs in 2011); Two FS (like Wilson and D. Thomas in 2013).

T. Gordon seems to me like a very athletic SS that can cover.  Kovacs more of a stereotypical SS.  This will work, as we've obviously seen, but it isn't ideal.   Wilson was a huge get as that center-field FS.

If Mattison is aiming to move towards a more traditional SS/FS format... I think we need a SS in this class as our depth after T. Gordon graduates is pretty thin  (even if Furman and M. Robinson are SS they will be Srs the year after T. Gordon)

Any insight on this would be appreciated...

I think the way the safeties were used in 2011 is pretty much what Mattison wants to do.  He's always seemed to have a "traditional" strong safety who's more of a run supporter (like Kovacs) and a free safety who's more of a cover guy.  The free safeties in 2011 weren't great at coverage, but they were at least deployed to be good at it.

Didn't feel like this was thread worthy, but TVH tweeted that LTT has been bumped up into the ESPNU 150 watchlist. Michigan now has 8 commits on the list. Nice to see him get deserved praise.

I know it's been said that Hawkins is likely a CB, but I bet the coaches try to take another safety in this class. I know we took three last year, but we took one the year before (maybe zero since he was a CB/S tweener) and guys like Robinson and Furman haven't yet proven they're ready for prime time. I'd be comfortable with one more highly rated safety.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jarrod Wilson gets a shot at cornerback since Michigan missed out on Anthony Standifer.  They're going to need a boundary corner in two years, and Richardson doesn't really fit there.  So they might be looking to take another safety if they feel the need to play Wilson at CB.
