Michigan now leads in Harbaugh Sportsbook odds

Submitted by MGoVictory on

As many of you know, last Monday morning, Sportsbook opened new odds for Harbaugh's coaching destination for next year. The odds were as follows:

  • Oakland -120
  • Other NFL Team +200
  • Does Not Coach +250
  • San Francisco +600
  • Michigan +600
  • Other NCAA Team +1500
Oakland was obviously the clear favorite.

Within just a couple hours, Michigan was down to  +300, and Oakland was down to -200 (IIRC).

By Tuesday, Michigan was down to +200, and Oakland was up to -160.

Around noon (EST) Saturday, Michigan was down to EVEN, and Oakland remained at -160.

By 9:00 PM Saturday night, Michigan was down to -120, and Oakland up to +110. Not sure what happened in the course of the day Saturday, but there was big movement in these odds. Clearly, according to these odds, Michigan is now the favorite for Jim's services. Current odds:
  • Michigan -120
  • Oakland +110
  • Other NFL Team +300
  • Does Not Coach +700
  • San Francisco +800
  • Other NCAA Team +2000
Take it for what is worth. I'm not sure what it means. It could simply mean a lot of bettors are pretty confident Jim is coming to Michigan.

EDIT: Sportsbook has pulled the bet (again) after Michigan moved to be the heavy favorite (again).

While it is true that Manwe and the other Valar sent Gandalf (and the other four Istari) to Middle Earth as part of a master plan, it was Eru himself who revived Gandalf.

From The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin paperback edition, 2000):

"[Gandalf] was sent by a mere prudent plan of the angelic Valar or governors; but Authority had taken up this plan and enlarged it, at the moment of its failure. 'Naked I was sent back - for a brief time, until my task is done'. Sent back by whom, and whence? Not by the 'gods' whose business is only with this embodied world and its time; for he passed 'out of thought and time'." (p. 203)

As Tolkien said in this letter, Gandalf was not sent back by "the gods" (e.g., Manwe as you suggested), rather "Authority" intervened since the Valar's plan failed. Tolkien refers to Eru as "Authority" in other letters (e.g., "Authority" is listed under "Eru" in the index), so it is clear that it was Eru who was responsible for reviving Gandalf.

I think Jim may be looking for a change. He may have reached the point of getting sick of dealing with professional players. A change to Michigan will make his job fun again! So, I'm a Michigan lean!

Or he could just pick up the phone.

"Jim, yeah hi, it's Jim. I'm going to need an extra $XX,000 in this contract so I don't have to bet on myself taking the UM job on the internet."

-Well, sure, Jim. Anything we can do to facilitate a scandal-free coaching transition.

"All set? Great. See you in January."

Probably not. Vegas seems to make its own rules about what they think is fair or not that are design to keep the odds in their favor. For example, if someone is smart enough to count cards, why is that not allowed?

Just the comment I'd expect from your avatar!

Kidding aside, you're generally right, but there is a public perception and PR element to this. There are some people out there who are really good at combining coupons/sales/etc. They are borderline obsessive about saving and any one of them can end up costing a grocery store, for example, thousands of dollars per month. Even though the stores in most cases reserve the right to not permit layering discounts, they usually don't. It just looks bad.

Now casinos are obviously a bit different, but my point is that it's not always in the business's interest to take their toys and go home if someone beats them at their own game. It's often in their long-term interest to be a good sport about it.

It has been almost 20 years since I worked in retail, so things could have changed a lot in that time frame.  However, when I did work in that industry, coupons were mostly manufacturer/distributor based.  We would take the coupons and send them to the manufacturer/distributor and they would then send a check to reimburse the store for them.  Coupons were a win/win situation for both the store and the manufacturer/distributor.  We sold more of their product at a discount, but still got full value and in turn bought more product from them.  So for the store, it really made no diffrence if people used multiples or not.

I know 7mil send like a hell of a lot of money and all, but owning and operating a jet is even a little out of that sort of league. Especially if you want to have other nice things like, a house not made of cardboard and a car you don't pedal yourself. 10 years ago I would have thought my current income would buy me some really, really nice things, but still I walk around feeling like I'm broke all the time.

Well...

Perhaps if you didn't use Louis XIII cognac to water your garden, or fly in a dozen hookers from papa new guineau "for sport" every weekend, you'd have enough money for a jet. I guess we all have tough decisions to make.
