Here are a few choice quotes.

Re: Devin Gardner

When he's dialed in, he's very good. When he's not, you don't know know he's not until he makes a mistake that should never have been made.

Gardner almost single-handedly lost the game for Michigan . . . his decision making under duress remains terrible.

Gardner threw three interceptions to an Akron defense that gave up 310 yards passing and three touchdowns to James Madison. One of those interceptions was a terrible pick six on a screen pass where Gardner never saw the defender in relation to his receiver. He has now thrown six interceptions on the season. That's as many interceptions as Braxton Miller threw all season last year.

Toussaint:

Toussaint struggled again, as 15 of his 19 carries went for four yards or less. It gets worse from there, however, as 12 of his 19 carries went for two yards or less and eight of his 19 carries went for no gain or less. In other words, his eighth-longest carry of the day went for no gain.

Fitz Toussaint will never create for himself, ever. If the hole is there, he'll hit it and do okay. If it isn't, automatic two yard loss.

O Line:

Center Jack Miller was pushed around like a shopping cart by Akron's defensive line, and he wasn't the only one. At one point, the BTN sideline reporter was talking to former Wolverine offensive lineman Steve Hutchinson about left tackle Taylor Lewan, and at that same moment, Lewan was being pushed into the backfield right to where the ball was for a loss of a couple of yards.

Akron's defensive line was just good enough to wreck havoc on a generally really bad Michigan offensive line, and that led to problems all over the field on the offensive side.

Secondary:

Last week I talked a bit about how open the middle of the field was against Notre Dame, and it was exploited again this past week by the Zips.

Defensively the secondary is a mess. Akron should not be throwing for 300 plus yards on anyone (they didn't even get that against James Madison), but the middle of the field is almost always open in Michigan's defense when teams feel like exploiting it. Countess has been opportunistic, but aside from him there's really no one to fear too much in the backfield at this point.

Defensive Line

Speaking of Mattison, he didn't seem all that happy on Saturday. His defense was getting pushed around. There was very little pass rush and there was no penetration. Michigan's starting defensive tackles Quinton Washington and Jibreel Black failed to record any tackles. They were too easily blocked in this game.

The lack of a pass rush is a concern. James Madison sacked Akron four times, which is four more times than Michigan sacked the Zips. Defensive end Mario Ojemudia continues to be the only Michigan defensive lineman with a sack. Frank Clark came in with big expectations, but to this point has just one tackle for loss.

Overall:

Michigan has a ton of gigantic, glaring holes in their team that need to be addressed ASAP or Big Ten season will be very difficult for them.

I'm waiting for the UFR's from Brian, but I'm feeling a bit glum about what this season portends. There are a few reasons I still have some hope.

  • The schedule. We have six weeks (four games plus two byes, one before Big 10 and one before MSU.) This will allow our extremely young team time to learn, and in the case of the lines, to gel. Hopefully Chesson gets more of a rhythm.
  • Jake Ryan. Whether he plays on the line as an end, or as a LB, he has to improve what the defensive line is doing, and the soft middle.
  • Courtney Avery. Now we know why he was moved. We need Avery in the secondary, to allow Countess to always play corner.
  • Williams. While having Williams in the game telegraphs "run," that's ok. Butt has promise, but we need a TE who can help block, and Williams appears to be option A, B, & C.

on Fitz and the secondary.

Fitz seems to be making something out of the absolute nothing the offensive line is giving him. There are no holes for him to take.

And the secondary has given some big plays, but mostly they're just getting dinked and dunked. Rees averaged 6.2 ypa on 51 attempts and Akron had 6.3 ypa on 49 attempts which I believe is fairly pedestrian. It's not their fault both teams would prefer to throw short passes all day long rather than run (96 yds and 107 yds respectively). The secondary is much better than anyone is giving them credit for

"The tailback continues to be a problem for the Michigan offense. Toussaint struggled again, as 15 of his 19 carries went for four yards or less. It gets worse from there, however, as 12 of his 19 carries went for two yards or less and eight of his 19 carries went for no gain or less.

"In other words, his eighth-longest carry of the day went for no gain."

His eighth-longest run of the day went for 2 yards. His eleventh-longest was for zero yards.

"The Wolverines rushed for 177 yards on 32 carries (5.5 ypc). However, the running backs rushed for just 74 yards on 20 carries."

For the board's information, the non-Gardner rushing stats look like this (per the MGoBlue archive):

CMU - 40 carries, 190 yards

ND -  26 carries, 84 yards

Akron - 22 carries, 74 yards (per the MGoBlue site)

Total: 88 carries, 348 yards - 3.95 YPC

Devin Gardner is responsible for about 40% of Michigan's rushing so far and gets almost twice the YPC as the RBs.

What ohio fans fail to realize is that they actually lost to akron while Michigan is undefeated against akron.

So this must be how UM fans sound when talking about opposing teams that they barely follow except during the week of the game?  Uninformed and rehashing half-truths or issues discussed ad nauseum.

Plays close attention, makes incisive comments and isn't too smarmy about it. And I thought his comments were, for the most part, spot on. My one point of disagreement is on why the middle of the field was open--he blames the secondary, but it's also the soft zone we're using in coverage. There are huge gaps and both the inexperienced secondary and the LBs don't have good instincts (yet) for how to deal with that. Against a team like Akron, using a lot of max protect blocking and not having great athletes, we might be better off using a more aggressive scheme with man-to-man coverage on the wideouts. Emphasis on "might."

Who in their right mind looks on Ohio related blogs for content on Michigan? What a waste of time. And you are glum because of that? What did you think they would say?

that if Jake Ryan comes back in October, he most likely will not be at full speed until next season.

So at this point we have to apply duct tape and rubber bands and run what we brung. (Of course Anakin won a pod race this way, therefore it is possible.)

"There are a few reasons I still have some hope."  REASON #1 = It's the Big 10.  It sucks.  Nebraska no defense, PSU no defense, MSU limited offense (yes I know, it will be against our defense).  NW and OSU are the 2 real challenges, Nebraska and PSU Devin should light up. MSU tricky only because their weakness matches our weakness and our (relative) strength matches their strength.  Can we lose against anyone else in Big 10, esp on the road? Yep.  We have major holes.  But please refer to reason #1 to have hope ... it is the friggin Big 10.

Does this differ from whatever your pre-season prediction was? I said they'd go 9-3 and I can't tell right now whether that's pessimistic or optimistic.

Of all the problems we're seeing from the team right now, it's Gardner's tendency to be reckless with the football that is the most disturbing.  There's been some speculation around here why Gardner wasn't promoted to starting QB earlier in the Hoke / Borges tenure, and I'm starting to get a feeling we're seeing why.  Gardner is a phenomenal talent, but he definately seems to struggle with not doing disasterous things with the football when under pressure.

we're both absolutely atrocious in their first years as starters. That said, they both went undefeated against Michigan and had pretty solid College careers. The latter also won the Heisman, so, ill give Gardner a little slack. If you watched him in HS, he was tne only talent on offense. He is used to doing it all himself. Once he learns that he can't do it all in college, he will be fine.

Part of the learning curve is to have a complete abortion of a game like that. This is where his mental toughness will be known.  If he can put it behind him and go back to the Gardner we saw vs ND (minus the end zone INT), then Akron could end up being a blessing in disguise.  If not, well, this could be a 4 loss season...

There's apparently no way UM could ever beat a URBZ lead tea....

Just wait till OSU gels and they get there DT back. OSU is the only team in the country where this happens I guess.
