Michigan-MSU highlights (WH style)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

A little over 29 minutes long.

Been waiting a long time to do a Michigan-MSU game.

take the 75 yards from the first series that MSU had been nurturing and practicing since training camp opened and their total yesterday looks quite a bit tamer.

Completely orchestrated and heavily practiced opening drives that net the underdog a lead and some confidence are a fascinating variable in college football. Would be interesting to know how much they boost an opponent's chances. Maybe tough to control for home/away games and O and D rank or Vegas odds, but would still be fun to stare at some stats.

Interesting point on first drives. Plus, Dantonio and staff can watch Michigan games and make little tweaks to the mechanics of each play on that first drive all season. No wonder it was a nice drive.

Someone should do a study of first drives and see how often they work (i.e., lead to points) and how often they actually impact the outcome of the game (in terms of which team is the underdog).

I would love to know what Dantonio says on the headset right after Peppers gets the two points.  I just can't figure it out.  I was imagining him saying "I hate him!"

WD this is really top notch- I like your "style" a lot. You show the highlights of BOTH teams and highlights of BOTH the offense and defense of each side. I don't see this anywhere else by a fan. Most fans produce very one sided videos. 30 minutes is perfect- I get to miss all those Geico ads, etc. I will look forward to next week's video.

A few reflections from watching:

Speight was much better than his stats show- his incomplete passes were generally

1. dead on the money

2. usually incomplete because of great defending

3. or incomplete b/c he was avoiding a sack

I saw very few balls  that were not catchable- his accuracy is becomming deadly. He is also very adept at getting away from pressure and throwing accurately while running. That will have to give OSU defenders pause when they look at his film.

The following things stand out and I'm sure will be discussed in other threads today, just want to post them before I forget.

1) The only pass I wish Speight would have connected on in stride was the bomb to Darboh when he is completly behind coverage, that puts Michigan up 21-10 and then 31-10 at the half. I think it also causes State to change their gameplan (having to be more aggressive instead of griding the clock) which would play right into our hands. I bet he wants that throw back for sure.

2) Nit-picky, but I was wondering why we didn't use the train formation in the Red Zone or attempt to run any TE/FB drag routs with Butt, Asiasi, Wheatley, Hill, Poggi, etc at all during the game? I'm always in the camp of that being a sure fire TD or a decent yardage gain especially with out athletic advantage at those positions.

3) This has been brought up multiple times, Peppers needs to hand the ball off to make that zone-read package more of a threat. State just started keying on him keeping the ball, and had it not been for an awesome spin move, he would have been dropped for a loss. I know he can throw, I think Harbaugh is saving that for OSU, same thing with the Morris packages. I really believe he wants teams to think that Morris and Peppers are always going to run or pitch.

4) Our tackling was awful and we were definitely asleep behind the wheel on defense at different points in the 2nd Half. That late bomb between Lewis and Hill(?) should never have happened. There were a couple of plays that we diagnosed perfectly and just whiffed on easy tackles. Two big plays stand out, Scott's big run in the first half and Lewerke's keeper on that garbage time drive.

Great, great win for us. Love hearing the State fans say Michigan is overrated because somehow we are expected to score 40-50 points a game. I think Don Brown really puts in work this week with the boys on sealing the edge and our defense gets better(?)....
