Michigan Monday Up

Consistently a good read, and it's always nice to get an outsider's perspective on our games, especially when the board is so polarized.

Absolutely! Some are Picassos, and once in a while you run into a stright up Jackson Pollock looking chick, but they're all art.

We may be looking past PSU with Rutgers looming next.

He knows he gets a lot of Michigan readers. Sometimes he plays up to us more than his own Buckeye slappies.

i am so goddamned tired of OSU, esp. with this year's game increasingly looking like yet another loss.
WHEN THE F*** WILL WE BEAT THOSE MOTHERF***ERS?
It's been way too lopsided for way too long.
October 17th, 2017 at 8:46 PM ^
I'm not buying the OSU hype on offense just yet. They haven't played anybody since the Oklahoma game.
October 18th, 2017 at 5:25 PM ^
We haven't played anybody either and we've had 5 nailbiters and a loss.
OSU is the better team this year and will probably win yet again.

In the Cooper era at OSU, we had a clear edge in the series. They have obviously dominated lately. This, too, will change eventually and the series will revert to normal.

I mean you're the one who says OSU's (passing) offense is the same as last year.
For all of 2016 OSU had 26 receiving TDs, this year they already have 24. Right now OSU already has 3 WRs with 20+ catches, last year they only had 2 WRs with 20+ catches for the whole season.
The routes and passing concepts are different. The play calling is different. The constraints are different. The WRs are different. JT is completing 67% of his passes at 9 ypa, which is 2 ypa and 6% better than last year. The measurable improvements during the last month are clear. They're no longer a bunch of new guys learning a new offense. If you care enough to look, Kyle Jones at 11W and Kyle Morgan at Ozone (and Ross Fulton behind a Rivals paywall) have broken down several ways in which OSU's offense is different and better than last year.
I'm sure you'd like to continue to close your eyes and pretend JT can't throw, and as a Michigan fan I know you've watched enough horrible QBing the last few years to become intimately familiar with the concept, but I think you're mistaken about OSU's current offense.
October 18th, 2017 at 8:02 AM ^
but he can do the throws in the system OSU is running right now.
They have played weak opponents lately, but regardless they are getting the offense down better than earlier against Oklahoma.
O'Korn will have to be better to beat the Nuts.

we'll beat them when we have a QB. Not going to beat a team like OSU without one.

We don’t need an Andrew Luck type to beat them. Just a great defense (which we have) and a QB who snakes smart decisions and doesn’t turn the ball over. Sadly, we have the opposite of that.
October 17th, 2017 at 10:37 PM ^
Ezekiel Elliott had only 12 carries and they attempted zero downfield passes. That similar gameplan allowed PSU to beat them and had us on the verge of beating them last year. If they pull the same gameplan this year, we will have a great chance of beating them and the refs.

Not so sure the board can be described as polarized. More like varying levels of depressed.

At the same point in his Ohio State tenure, Urban Meyer had two quarterback signees of his own setting records and leading the Buckeyes to a national title. Sure, it took an injury to Braxton Miller to make it happen, but it still happened. Michigan has lost Wilton Speight and how are they responding?
Where is Jim Harbaugh’s signature quarterback?
Until we know the answer to this question, Michigan football will have more weeks like the last two.
October 17th, 2017 at 9:20 PM ^
It's worth remembering that because Urban was "retired," they were able to hire him early and he was able to commit 100% to recruiting. On the other hand, Harbaugh got hired at the last minute and had to scramble to put together a class. It's also worth remembering that those quarterbacks were throwing to an outstanding veteran WR corps and were protected by an elite offensive line that was largely recruited by the previous (outstanding) staff. Tressel didn't get fired because he was winning 10-12 games/year.

Braxton was never going to beat you running a pro style offense. Meyer's power spread offense was perfect for Braxton, JT and Cardale. It makes for non-NFL ready QBs, but it will shred 90% of college defenses.
If Meyer came in trying to run the type of offense Harbaugh is running, he would've suffered on that side of the ball. His offense was perfect for the established starter they had.
October 18th, 2017 at 10:25 AM ^
that Urban also walked into a talent-rich team that was recruited (read: bought and paid for) by the Vest, he didn't have the mess that Hoke left behind to contend with. Fickel wasn't a good head coach in his interim year, but there was no drop-off in recruiting like we had waiting for Harbaugh to get out of his NFL contract and scrambling to fill in a class on short notice.
Bit of a difference in circumstance there.

IU is not Cam Cameron's IU. They are good enough to scare teams.
Plus, I am hoping that IU upsets Sparty this weekend to put a little polish on the turd that was the last two weeks of M football.

I don't think people are dismissive of the TEs per se. I just don't think people have faith that we have a QB who can deliver the ball to said TEs. If a QB can't involve TEs into the offense, their value is entirely mitigated...
58 yards passing is not going to help our TEs.
October 17th, 2017 at 9:21 PM ^
Doesn't matter if they don't get the ball thrown their way. I think Gentry had time to knit a sweater he was so open on a few plays, but O'Korn was locked onto his pre-snap read... who was double covered.

I will start bawling when we beat ohio. I shed a few tears in 2011, but when Harbaugh gets his first win over them I will be broken to tears in happiness. That day will be the happiest day of my life.
