that Stauskus FT miss could loom large
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
that Stauskus FT miss could loom large
Finish strong guys
lol how come the 3-pointer to cut the lead in half under a minute left is so automatic in college? Like without fail it goes down.
on a play we run for him
...but I guess it's because GRIII is hurt.
Is it me or dies Patino look like Howard Wolowitz?
How the f was that not a foul?!
Nice tackle. Nice no call.
What the actual fuck was that?
... What the fuck?
Wow, refs suck.
You have got to be shitting me
C'mon, refts, srsly?!?!
HOW THE FUCK WAS THAT NOT A FOUL
Do you foul for the 2?
That's our ball.
Literally grabbed his arm, full on fucking bear hug. Seriously?
lol home cooking, the kind we never get at Crisler
Most bullshit no call ever!! Then clearly not out on Stauskas!
ref misses the foul then ball clearly off minny.
un fucking believeable
Son of a bitch, why can this team never close out close games? Ever?
Canadians isn't a foul? Got it.
What the ever-loving fuck refs? It wasn't even off is us either!
Three separate fouls there. Ridiculous
That was a foul and it was out of bounds on Minnesota. Fucking idiots.
Regardless should still be our ball... Wtf?
Was a new year
Was it off of Stauskas? Looked like it was off of Minnesota.
Ugh... he just fell...
No foul, but definitely off of Minnesota. Are they reviewing that?
Two fouls and OOB on Minny
Tripping is certainly okay I see.
No way that was off Stauskas.
and no foul call. Jesus
Actually probably wasn't fouled there, but looked like it was out on Minny for sure to me.
I'm watching on the most pixellated stream in history..and that was NOT out on Stauskas.
100% Michigan ball.
They won't overturn that bullshit either because its so obvious.
Nik was mugged big time
Has to be.
Because Minnesota sucks!
If this isn't Michigan ball than what's the point of the rule?
Not only does that ref miss the foul, but he totally misses that Stauskas didn't touch it.
They're probably going to let Minnesota keep it anyway. Home cookin'
If this isn't reversed it will be a travesty
At least they got that right.
The fuck?! He was looking right at it and it was off Minnesota!
Minnesota player accidently punched Stauskas in the stomach as the ball was going out.
would have been a travesty if they kept that ball in Minny's hands
only 5 sec to get across half court now.
Not true, 10-sec count resets for every inbound,.
Fuckin'-A right, it's Michigan ball!
That kids sign actually made me laugh..."I DISAGREE"
Came here just to say that haha
2014 a different year?
In the end Nik can put it away for us...
Gotta love Big Ten commentators. Applauding the great Minnesota defense on that play...
"I Disagree" is a fantastically polite sign
and they call that touch foul in a split second to give Minnesota more time but not call a full mugging
if they would have tackled him it wouldn't have been a foul
missing free throws late...a staple of the team.
free throws. free throws. free throws.
Jesus. Now BTN2Go is showing Nebraska-northwestern women's game that just started. What the fuck.
ARGH! MAKE. FREE. THROWS.
This seems a lot like 2013 sneaking in there with our choking at the line.
Freshmen. Good rebound by Horford. Come on big guy
And Horford swishes it. Go figure
we may get lucky to win this game
Score update? BTN is down and ESPN is stuck.
Horford had a huge game.
2014 certainly hasn't been any easier on my blood pressure
Is this a god damn joke?
FOUL ON THAT THREE?!? FUCK THESE REFS
DON'T FOUL A JUMP SHOOTER FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!
This is some bullshit
He kicked out his leg. Use the GD replay for that shit
My god please make FT's. They're free for a reason.
NOBODY TOUCHED HIM!
Another horseshit call
Jesus. We've learned nothing in late game situations. The Arizona game taught us nothing.
What a joke.
Terrible by Stauskas. Where has his head gone these last possessions?
I'd be more critical of Stauskas if he actually touched the guy.
that was a terrible call but why are you even out there?
I have a bad feeling...
We're going to win, don't worry
Surprised they called that foul...
Home cooking. On the other end they could have called 3 fouls on that play where Stauskas lost it... But now you breathe on a guy and it's three shots
For the love if Canada!
We better foul and not let them get up a 3...
Stauskas singlehandedly trying to lose this game for U-M.
play from the next guy up to be a leader after Robinson went down.
This is a rough finish for the good guys.
Now JB calls a timeout so Minny can draw up their play...
I'm trying not to actually
They even gave Stauskas' FT to Minnesota. Unbelievable
Make the damn free throws.
That was a weak call on Stauskas. terrible
Agreed! Not a foul!
Let's see if Beilein has learned anything about how to defend these situations
And the kid probably should've made the shot.
They made them bring it up the court, and given the refs were calling fouls on 3 pointers where the shooter wasn't touched, it was probably wise to just guard close and try to throw them off
Forgotten more basketball than you know
It's entertaining to see how many seem to think they know more though. I can imagine them going head to head with JB. He'd he that smirk and bury them before the shot clock sounded. Crazy as subs.
Make sure they're going AWAY from the basket.
I'm looking at YOU Zak Irvin. AWAY FROM THE BASKET!!
Beilein is God!!!
Michigan wins 63-60, *phew*
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 2014, so much better than 2013
We beat you all
Hell yea! Suck it refs
Woooo road win!
Phew! Big road win, though.
That was awful.
Guard the inbounder and foul on the catch.
Seriously Beilein learn from the Wisconsin and OSU games, foul when you're up 3. That's far too good of a look.
It's not a right/wrong decision. There's two schools of thought and with that time remaining it's tough because if you get close enough to foul with a guy running towards the basket, he's going to put it up. You CANNOT give up three FTs in that situation.
There wasn't much of a chance to foul without potentially putting yourself in that situation. Regardless, we know that Beilein will play that situation a certain way, which means they practice it that way. He's been coaching basketball longer than many of us have been alive and that's clearly his strategy so we might as well quit whining about it.
Obviously Beilein knows far more about basketball than I do, but it seems like that situation has bit him enough these past few years that he might re-think his strategy. Now I could be very wrong, but that looked like far to good of a shot for the limited time.
I'm sure he has. There's just pros and cons to that situation and I think we are being a little talk radio callerish if we act like there's one right answer and the guy who's clearly studied it more than us and has better knowledge of his players than us gets that answer wrong.
I've been in that situation as a coach and there are so many things that can go wrong, I also wouldn't foul:
Intentional foul called b/c your guys need to make sure to foul early enough and might over-do it. (WORST scenario, because now you've put yourself in a position to lose, not just go to OT).
Foul too late and have continuation awarded.
Foul way too early and have to deal with rebounding the second FT miss.
Foul on that rebound.
You can argue (and I've done so with myself) that those are unlikely events, but they are all possible. Is their sum probability bigger than hitting a rushed, contested, deep three? Probably. At least, that's my thought and why I wouldn't foul.
Fair enough, and you're certainly right that there is no truly correct choice.
2014 > 2013??!!!!!
ways than one....
replies than one?
That was ridiculous. By the skin of our teeth. Thankfully its a "W".
Way to hang tough blue! Huge win!
a huge win. That said any road win in the B1G is worth its weight in gold
Agreed. That was a huge win and we were great defensivly the last 5 minutes up until the end. A win is a win but I really wish Beilein would learn from his mistakes on last second possessions.
Not pretty, but we'll take it. Probably going to be many more like that one.
HUGE HUGE HUGE!!!! on the road without McGary OR Robinson...we have 3 winnable games in front of us...HUGE WIN
Great win. Kenpom is a dirty liar!
I love 2014.
Undefeated in 2014.
That was too close. Hey, Wolverines. Next time when you are winning by four with minimal time left and your opponents are shooting a three, let them have it. Just back away and let them shoot.
Just enjoy the win man. Has the last 6 months taught you nothing?
If you see the replay it was a total flop. Like punter-flop. No one touched him
Ugly finish but very well played in the previous couple minutes to pull ahead and turn a tied game into a 6 pt lead. Had to dig out of an early second half hole, too.
There are no bad road victories in this conference, especially not when you consider the injury situation and the youth at PG. Good win, guys!
That is a huge win. Road wins are very hard to come by in the Big 10. Gotta think Minny will beat one or two of the other big dogs at home.
any road win in the big ten is good. But that was way too close
Why doesn't Beilein ever put a person on the in-bounds man?
That was a good look on top of all the other stuff. Still think they should have fouled. Wisconsin game repeat...almost.
explained it before. He does it when he doesn't want a guy leaking it out and putting the defense in scramble mode.
Rejoice in any big ten road win no matter how it comes!
Glad they could hang on. Here's to the start of a better year in 2014!
came up big. game balls to you two dudes.
Those fuckers just cost me a couple months off my life.
Are the PAC 12 football equivalent
I guess Walton should have just laid on the ball while the clock kept running.
There's no such thing as a Big 10 ref...
officially no. but practically yes. the BIG generally has the same small group of dudes officiating its games. they just are allowed to also ref other conference games too.
Are no B1G refs in basketball.
I hate the pool of refs that generally do Big Ten (B1G) games.......
Is the real deal
He was looking good. Irvin was very highly ranked coming in, and is showing some of that skill off.
for the freshman. He's smooth as hell...and he's just getting started.
I will take it. Hung in there.
In 2013 that heave would've went in. Backboards do not exist in 2014.
Big road win! Gotta hit those free throws down the stretch fellas.
Wait. I missed the game. Someone please fill me in in the GRIII injury. Was it bad? Booboo? I was working...
Looked like an ankle injury. Hopefully not serious but he didn't return after he injured it.
and turned an ankle. The good news is that while he did not return to the game he was on the sidelines and not back in the locker room.
We beat KenPom on the road - no matter how you do that, it's a huge win.
Now we get Northwestern at home (who just get decapitated by Wisco) followed by Nebraska and Penn State. Really crucial to get off to a 4-0 start and this win was probably the toughest part of that.
the good...we WON...Irvin is coming alive and we handled the pressure fairly well once we settled down.. Road wins are Huge..Stauskas was solid. Horford had a couple key baskets but missed a easy layup..we need more in the middle. we found a way to win a road game at a very tough place to play..
The bad..Walton missing TWO fts at the end..Im not impressed much wth him..I think he was overrated..Levert CONTINUALLY plays out of control and Morgan is worthless..
the ugly...Losing Robinson...if he doesnt come back right away that would be pretty much a complete Disaster for this team... who lets face it.. is struglling
we will be lucky to get another game from horford like that the rest of the year. 14 pts and 9 rebounds. by far his best game of career. 6-8 shooting. you can't ask for more than that.
Seriously? Walton is one game in to big ten play and you think he is overrated? Not every freshman pg is trey Burke. Would have liked to hear your opinion on Morris his freshman year. I trust Beilein his last two pg were drafted.
He is what he is. A solid space eater who can grab a few boards, play some D and make the occassional put back. WIth no real stud in our front court I will take a solid vet like Morgan.
without Walton's personal 5-0 run that included him drawing a charge call. He had a decent game.
Took the junior to school.
Anyone still doubting?? They won with no McGary and Robinson for 1 half. This team is resilient playing a tough nonconference schedule is a huge advantage and they continue to improve as long as they stay healthy. The next 3 games shouldn't b too difficult but don't take anything for granted. Then u got @ Wisconsin and home with Iowa. I think they'll b fine
We can haz nice things? I like 2014
Glad to see this team fight through and get the W. We still get killed on the boards...
I think Walton does things many here aren't seeing because they hone in while he's leading the point on offense and realize it's not Trey Burke. For example, he had a couple nice (needed) rebounds; one late-ish he skied high for and if he didn't get the ball it was going into Minnesota's hands again. A couple first half drives we're actually pretty nice, one hanging in the air to get off and damn near putting it in over Elliason; they were misses, sure, but he attacked and put up some Burke-esque shots which will fall for him down the road. He hit a big three as well, mid-2nd half. A PG who can shoot is always huge.
Horford played pretty well. I think him and Jordan bring different things to the table, both have their negatives, also (Jordan wouldn't have thrown down that big time dunk from Stauskas' assist, late, for example).
Overall a very big win in a good road environment playing the full 2nd half without an NBA player who's especially been playing well lately.
*Also, I do not like Pitino the Young...yet. I don't like the way he looks (shallow, yes, I'm an asshole I admit it) and his walking up the sideline and the camera showing so much of him was annoying (albeit very minor).
No need to panic this team will be fine
And that was without McGary and Robinson (for the most part). A lot of guys stepped up in this win which is encouraging. D-Walt has been fine so far, if you have realistic expectations. Trey was a once in a generation player so quit dreaming. There's plenty of weapons on this team, they just need to play with confidence and they'll be fine. Go Blue!
In tight games already this year plenty of times. I agree our non-conference schedule was brutal and it taught us valuable lessons. Minny was tight and nervous near the end, kinda like us at Iowa State. Horford was a beast tonight, and the two freshman were awesome. The refs were horrible, but that happens in away games. The time Stauskas got shoved down three times with no foul was jaw-droppingly ridiculous. We came, we saw, and we beat that ass. Go Blue!!!
Really nice win - no McGary, no GR3 for half the game and we beat a top 30 RPI team on the road.
This team is a joy to watch offensively - they make the extra pass and find that open guy. You can see them getting on the same page as the season progresses.
Here's what I saw on a review of the thread:
You all need to take a freaking breather, folks. Seriously, 2014 is over. Step back from the ledge. Here's the truth of the matter.
1: Fouls were almost even for and against, 17 to 18. That's almost exactly par for the season.
2: In his first Big Ten game, our FRESHMAN PG had a 4 to 1 Assist to TO ratio, pulled down more rebounds than anyone save our C, shot poorly but did anything but hog the ball, and hit 66% on FT's, his only two misses coming in big time pressure. He also had a lights out steal.
3: The Morgan/Horford 2 headed monster was never supposed to play this kind of minutes, so excuse me if I think a 7-for-10, 3-6 FT, 11 Rebound, 2 Steal, 1 Block, 17 point combined performance isn't too shabby for what approximates a single player. I find it hard to believe McGary's overall numbers would've been that much better.
4. Seriously, people? You're going to criticize Stauskus? The guy, who, should he get hurt, you can pretty much wrap the season up and toss it in the trash? He does everything but make breakfast. If he has the occasional miss on an open look a FT or makes a bad foul, well, who would you RATHER have in there?
5: Beilein, the coach who took Zak Novak and Stu Douglass & gang to the NCAA Tourney, who schemed out a way for a bunch of midgets to beat a bunch of California Redwoods, and he doesn't learn?
6: At least get your criticisms straight. In one game, every guy on he team was both awesome and horrible at everything!
..it's an open thread man. We could win 5000-3 and people on here would be furious we gave up the 3. It's just the nature of these threads. Always reactionary.
