Michigan mens basketball vs. Illinois open thread
Burke leaving a lot of his shots short today
I wish they didn't get so many offensive rebounds, also. Killer.
HAIL.
Wow, I don't remember ever scoring on the last possession before halftime. That was sweet.

BOOM Hardaway!
"Long time listener, first time caller."
Good half. Destroying Kenpom's prediction if we can replicated this in the second half.

Michigan shot horrible from 3 and still leads by 8 on the road. I'll take it.

Game plan for second half: get some defensive rebounds
We should be up by 12. The foot's gonna be planted firmly on the throat soon after halftime.

I feel like if Michigan plays their game, they're up 17-18...if Illinois plays there, they're probably up 6-7.
That half was kind of a wash. Whoever wakes up, wins.
“True loyalty is that quality of service that grows under adversity and expands in defeat. Any street urchin can shout applause in victory, but it takes character to stand fast in defeat. One is noise — the other, loyalty.”
Considering Illinois is nailing all their 3s and seem to get 2nd chance shots every possession...I'll take it.
"Welllllllll..."
Actually they're only 5/15, which is 33%, which is about what their season average is. We need to limit the offensive rebounds.

Burke loves him some long 2s.
"Long time listener, first time caller."
Strategy is Burke hold ball and take crappy shot. Thankfully that one went in.

Obviously this means good things for Michigan.

Great first half. They're looking good tonight. Regardless of the negative outlooks by many of you (McGary, Trey Burke) they're playing well. Illinois is dumb for going away from Egwu; haven't heard his name in the past 15 minutes. If the Illini think Paul and co. are going to win this game by jacking up three's left and right they've got another thing comin'. Go Blue.
Solid first half, but no one told me whether or not Spike Albrecht's dad was a great youth basketball player.
That is true but at least we know that Stauskas can do more than shoot the three.

Once Tim gets it going in the second half this will turn into a blowout.
Really smart play by Hardaway there. I always hate it when a team has like 50 seconds left in the half and burns the clock down below 35. The obviously correct play in that situation is that if you have anything resembling a decent shot, hoist it up and leave more than 35 seconds on the clock. Michigan gets last possession out of Hardaway's smart move and makes it count.

Illinois is only 5-15 from 3 for 33.3%, I think they've just been timely. They were around 50% for awhile but cooled off the last few minutes of the half.
HAIL.
Paul is 3-6 and Abrams 1-2. Richardson is only 1-5 and Griffey (the other two shots) is 0-2. Summary: Richardson and Griffey can shoot threes all day if they want to. Someone needs to shut down Paul.

Don't they still shoot 24% normally? Not a lot better, but still better than average

I'll take the lead, but I've been yelling "NOOOOO, TTTTRRREEEEEYYYYY!" a bit too much with some of that shot selection.

I love the speeches from Bacari. I swear that guy owns a costume shop with all the props he brings to pregame.
Execute offense - even if shots aren't falling. Still have to run something, too much standing around or Burke dribbling and chucking.
Match Illinois' effort, hustle and intensity. Losing too many 50/50 balls and getting outrebounded.
Do that and if Illinois wakes up we win by 10, if they stay sleep - we win by 20-25.
Just play Michigan Basketball. Period.

We get it.

mich is up 20-16 in rebounds. they could box out a little better on D but you're going to give up a few more rebounds when you guard the 3 harder than normal.
like a bigger than 8 point lead?
Take away the last 4 shots they made, which were all about 25 foot 3's and we'd be up 35-15
It might feel that way because the final few minutes were pretty much all Michigan. Halftime came at a good time for the Illini because Michigan was starting to roll pretty well, hopefully we can continue on with that.
HAIL.
But if Morgan makes his layup, McGary makes his, Burke makes his free throw on the and one, Horford and Max B. don't fumble offensive rebounds and we score...that's like 10 more points.
Just been a sloppy/ugly half.
One of those games were we could be up big like you said but we're letting them hang around. Which is dangerous on the road.

The newspaper gig looks so much better when the students at Yost do it, just throwing that out there.
HAIL.
I wouldn't mind seeing Belein mix in a little more zone this half.
I agree. The first possession that they introduced it, the Illini threw the ball away because of the change in pressure.
"Smokey, this is not 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules." - Walter Sobchak
The problem with zone is that using it against a good three point shooting team normally does not work. The one time Michigan used it effectively in this game was due more to surprise than anything.
