Michigan-Men, Step Up.

Submitted by NYWolverine on

Prima facie, yea, there's an argument to be made that Michigan is having a rough year. OK, I should have premised that with an "obvious" tag. Sue me. Lemme finish tho.

This Fall, as every Fall, we looked to the Michigan Men on our football team to raise our spirits, and keep them raised. I'd be lying if I said there's not a sour taste in my mouth in the aftermath. But think of the guys who left it on the field; we were just spectators.

Then this Winter, we looked expectantly to the Michigan Men on our basketball and hockey teams to carry the day. To lead us out of the darkness. Yea, about that. But again, if we're disappointed, it must pale in comparison to what our athletes are feeling.

Not since 1962 has Michigan seen such misery shouldered by our proud and traditioned Michigan Men. Well, to that anomalous statistic I propose a proactive solution. I don't know about you, but as a Michigan Man myself, I'm sick and tired of feeling blue about my maize affiliation. And I'll be damned if I can't propose a solution.

Fellow Michigan Men of MGoBlog, I humbly propose a seasonal solution. A solution based on the Michigan spirit and tradition of giving, as has been well represented recently by Charles Woodson, Steven Ross, Tom Monaghan, et al.

MGoBloggers, what do you say we raise some $$$ for Mott?

I'm asking that Brian, Tim, Paul and friends shift Beveled Guilt to Beveled Guilt for Kids for a couple weeks. Let's put a number on the blog to reach before Christmas. If you can afford the wasted minutes on here checking the latest on Brian Kelly and ND, you can afford $5 to $10 for Michigan Hospital. Can we raise $5,000? $10,000?

Whatever figure, it would sure make me proud to have contributed. It would make me proud as a Michigan sports fan to know you all contributed too. It's what we can do to set us apart from 1962.

Brian, if you set this up, I've got the first $50 for the pot.

My statement is simply that if we feel shitty about Michigan, we shouldn't be blind to the fact we have an opportunity to do something about it. But you know, when I read one of Brian's articles about miserable and anomalous sports years after getting home from a 12 hour work-day, I'm gonna ramble a bit. That is my bad.

But if we can get a 'Donations for Mott' link on the blog by the week's end, then I'll be pretty amped about it.

profits will go to charity for a week? (Just throwing this out there). Either way I'd be down to throw down for some charity.

For all the people who read this blog, we should be able to raise some decent coin. I think this is a great idea and should be an annual thing.

We love to say how we're different, let's prove it.

EDIT: I just counted on the MGoPoint list, and there are over a thousand users with 100 points or more. I say we see how much we can raise, but the goal should be at least 10k.

Gotta have goals. Could we match Woodson's donation? Or maybe get another famous Wolverine to match our efforts? There's gotta be someone out there with some major cash on hand.... we're rich, beeyotches!

I sent him an email yesterday. I would set up an account for donations myself, but I thought the idea would be best served if Brian could take charge and present a check to Mott as the shining ambassador of Michigan fandom that he is. Plus, I'm in NY, so the best I could do is mail it in. Brian on the other hand can generate a little publicity, get the Daily involved with a quick article, etc.

I know it seems lazy to just come up with an idea and pass it off, so if anyone can work with me on this (setting up a donation account, maybe getting student athletes, alumni involved), I'll make some PR calls, etc.

I am more than happy to donate to Mott if a link is posted, I think that's a great idea.

But lets not ask Brian to shift the beveled guilt to them as well. Brian works incredibly hard on this blog for relatively little reward, and asking him to give one of his sources of income to this cause is somewhat unfair. I would guess that he'd be willing to donate some himself and post a link, but lets not put an unfair burden on him by taking away a revenue stream.
