Michigan makes top 8 for 2016 DE Kelly.

Submitted by We'll be Champions on

He tweeted out his top eight today which included Michigan, Bama, Florida St., Clemson, Georgia, Kansas St., Oregon, and TCU.

This is obviously a very loaded list and UM has its work cut out for them, but in Harbaugh we trust.

He is a four star according to 247 comp. and ranked 102 in the nation.

Woohoo football news!

We can easily end up as one of the top classes this year if we bat .400 from here on out. I think it's safe to say Harbaugh and company found their stride....

We're going to have to bat quite a bit higher than that unless some other things happen like:

1.  At least a few of our guys get re-rated higher, and nobody gets rated lower

2.  A lot more attrition occurs either with the underclasmen on the football team or with the current commits to the class.

Both of those are plausible, but #1 isn't necessarily going to happen, and #2 comes with some bad side effects.  If we land Gary and then five more 4* guys on top of that and shed one 2* or 3* guy in the meantime, then we would end up at about where Penn State was last year, which was #15.

not only does past evidence suggest it's the way he recruits but you have kids who will ebb and flow with the season along with more exposure. I have no evidence but I think guys like the type that caused certain SEC boards to meltdown will get more exposure and likely want to stay South. I hear Bama is already reaching out. I think at least one if the Indiana kids but named Peters goes elsewhere, too. I expect the final class to look little like it does right now. We'll see if it's for better or worse.

Your point is well made.  National team ranking services vary in how their formula works as well.  For example Rivals only takes the top 20 commits while Scout takes the top 25.  Based on ratings of new commitments for us and other teams around us results could be different on Rivals than on Scout.

Upvote just for the mere fact that this has nothing to do with Adidas, Nike, or any other clothing company.

Interesting, I thought MSU and Nebraska were the major competition and they aren't on there.  Unfortunately he just got a ton of people picking Alabama for him on 247 so that doesn't bode well.

Regardless of where these kids end up it's great that so many of them have UM on their list. Gives the recruiting world just a bit more awareness that we are back with every tweet that goes out.

except for last year I'm not sure any school in America ends up in a recruits top-5 more than Michigan. Even kids you know we have zero shot at tend to put us ash least in their top-10 so that's nothing new in itself. It's so common that I hardly trust when we're in a top-3 lol

No Nebraska?  Interesting - that was the perceived leader.

Moar Alabama?  Damnit.

That is a pretty friggin loaded top 8 though - based on the past 5 years UM is #8 in the hierarchy of those teams.  Hopefully he watches a lot of film of the 80s and 90s.

He reported what amounts to his top 3 at the moment as UGA, FSU and Bama. Given how long Michigan has been recruiting him, it would seem that is not a promising sign at this point.

If that's the case, I'm guessing the safer bet at this point is probably Terrell Lucas, three star WDE out of Florida (Other Offers: South Florida, Syracuse, Minnesota). Michigan is the only school listed as warm on his 247 profile and has all 6 of the Crystal Ball projections. It seemed like he was all but committed to Michigan back during the Summer Swarm. I wonder if the staff told Lucas to hold off until the Kareem and Xavier Kelly situations resolved themselves. With Kareem to Bama and Kelly currently favoring elsewhere, Lucas may become a take pretty soon.

This is incorrect.

The quote was "I’m really comfortable with Alabama, Florida State and Georgia."
On 247, he gave a rundown on all 8. He has family in Georgia and Michigan.

Also, Saban and his staff must use snake oil. Khalid Kareem talked about early playing time as a factor. Xavier Kelly said the same thing. I can't help but roll my eyes. Da'Shawn Hand was lucky to see a few snaps last year.

Top 8?  Who cares!

Michigan is head and shoulders above any of those schools.  If a kid wants to lump us with a handful of other schools as potentials it doesn't seem to be very newsworthy to me.

Very confident in the near future there will be a bullrush by prospects to get a ticket on the UM train before it leaves the station.  Kids spouting on social media that we're one of eight schools they are interested in will make most of our eyes glaze over.  If they get off the fence and decide on Michigan they may just find their seat has already been filled.
