Lake Forest (IL) WR Bo Dever commits to walk-on at #Michigan: recruiting.scout.com/2/1081869.html

Per Allen Trieu, IL WR Bo Dever has committed to walk-on at Michigan. Dever doesn't have any scholarship offers but it sounds like he has D-1 potential. His father is former Wolverine Dave Dever and yes, he is named after Bo Schembechler.

Three very good reasons to like this kid:

1.  His Dad named him after Bo

2. Although he lives in Lake Forest he did not attend Loyola Academy (Gordon Tech-GO RAMS!)

3. That hit he put on some poor kid 54 seconds into his highlight reel-NICE!

You will love  Ann Arbor Bo!

He's 6'2 195 lbs. Great hands, your prototypical possession receiver. He has meh speed but he's smart and knows how to get open, finds space b/w defenders and is a pretty good downfield blocker. Not really considered a D1 prospect but hey, his film looks nice...and his name is Bo.

I am pretty sure preferred walkons get some benefit. Just not sure what it all entails.

Edit: And from the sound of this he would be a preferred walkon

that article does not say that walk-ons have their room and board (dorm and food) paid for.  it says that they get the benefits of a scholoarship player without the tuition.  the more likely interpretation is that the author is mistakenly lumping in room and board with tuition.

see this article: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/college/s_715456… which explicitly says that walk-ons do not get room and board.

The NCAA rulebook is pretty complex...but they even ask that walk-ons pay for their training table...not sure how that applies to other boarding costs.

This is from a section re: Housing and Meals...

A student-athlete who does not receive institutional athletically related financial aid covering the

full cost of board, including a walk-on or partial scholarship recipient, may purchase one training table meal

per day at the same rate that the institution deducts from the board allowance of student-athletes who receive

athletically related financial aid covering board costs pursuant to Bylaw 15.2.2.1.6

It is my understanding that the NCAA does not differentiate between the preferred walk-on and the regular walk-on. The preferred status is a term developed by the schools. It means whatever the agreed arraignment between the school and athlete, such as a scholarship over time or a guaranteed roster position. Apparently, a free tutor and use of the facilities may be part of this arraignment.

The non-scholarship player has the right to merit scholarships and scholarships offered by approved foundations. Local scholarships may also be acceptable if it is merit based. Loans may also be provided so long as the athlete meets the criteria established for the general student population. So the preferred walk-on may receive tuition benefits, but it will not be athletically related.

Scholarships cannot be split for Division 1 football programs. However, for all other sports and divisions, the scholarships may be split. So a "preferred walk-on" for a Division 2 program may receive tuition and other benefits because of merit and partial athletic scholarships. This scholarship split may also be a source of the confusion.

It's good to see we're getting some talented preferred walk-ons like Dever and Kerridge.  Plus there are a couple young OL on the roster that may contribute in a couple years.

But, we will be losing a lot of contributing walk-ons after this year, IIRC, the following guys are 5th year seniors and all are crucial special teams players (There will be a lot of spots to replace the special teams' units next year):

McColgan - Starting FB

Heinenger - DT/DE contributor

Pimarico - Starting LS

Tony Anderson - CB

Van Slyke - FS

Zach Johnson - S

Floyd Simmons is a RJr. that will hopefully stay for a 5th year.

I really like that his tape isn't just of him making catches. My favorite play is when he comes back to the play and drills a guy for his running back. Love the grit. Welcome.

He went to the same High School as Matt Vogrich I believe, let's hope he can develop in to a Blair White or Dane Sanzenbacher
