Michigan Lacrosse season ends at 5-11 (PROGRESS!)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

1 seed fairfield ended Michigan's 2014 season early this evening by a score of 12-5. The amount of progress this team has made this season has been incredible. If you double their win total from the last two seasons combined, you still wouldn't equal this year's total.

ALSO:

The 7 seed Michigan Women are taking on 2 seed ohio in the ALC Tournament First Round right now. The women had a good first season in terms of wins, going 4-12. Tonight will hopefully be redemption for the team against ohio who beat Michigan 18-3 back in April.

Here is the link for the Women's game at 8pm- http://apps.ohlulz.com/ncaa/?f4m=http://cbsicollege-lh.akamaihd.net/z/445323_big109UMGS@141281/manifest.f4m

My high school was the Antlers, and I can't tell you how many times there were "camo-outs" and they wore, obviously, camo and the orange hunting gear.

We went 12-1 and won the state championship my junior year, so HA!

The Lacrosse team has a bright future. Especially when they get older and more experienced

Our defense looks atrocious. They are just running right by us for point blank shots. On offense, it seems like we run toward the net but never take a shot. Is that by design?

Can't afford to waste possessions with bad shots. Sometimes the guys seem to overthink the shot. And defensively, Michigan is MILES ahead of where they were the last two years. I'll take it. Holding team to record-lows at half and quarters all year.

Well, next year will be our 4th year which means that it will finally be filled out with recruiting classes. We should be .500 or better and contend for the big ten title.

.500 or better, yes, we could easily see that, depending on what the rest of the schedule is; contend for the Big Ten title, no.  We'll have to scratch and claw to make a four-team tournament.

Regardless, this season went very, very well.  A backup goalie in net all season and five wins, one more than I projected at the beginning, and they made the goal of getting to the ECAC tourney.  I think you have to really like how this season went.  Last year kind of derailed the train a little; this year, right back on track and then some.

I agree with this.  I also predeicted 4 wins, and although we lost some I thought we'd win, we won a few I thought we'd lose and we played a couple teams really close that I didn't think we could.  I think .500 could be a good goal depending on the schedule, though we better hope we have an easy OOC schedule because there aren't many winnable Big Ten games.  Making the conference tourney would be huge because it will mean we beat out one of PSU and OSU.

A correction to the poster above you - next year we'll still only have three classes of D1 recruits - the guys who are juniors now were alll club recruits.  We announced going D1 after those guys were recruited and committed.  Although it's possible many of them committed knowing that might be the case, it was not a D1 recruiting class.

If you told me that before the season started, especially after news of Logan going down broke, I would've asked what are you smoking and where can I get some

Great progress for this program. It's so great to see this from day 1. When I entered my HS (it's a 3 year school), Michigan was 0-0 all-time and I had no idea what we were in for.

I'll be graduating at the end of the month having seen the most successful season thus far in the program's 3-year history. Who knows, Michigan may have an NCAA National Championship in Lacrosse by the time my kids are in HS some day.

Can't wait for next year to see the goalie battle.

Also, as of right now, the 2014 team owns every single season team record except saves. The statistical progression of the program is massive if you compare 2014 to the previous two years.

in understanding the game of lacrosse.  I've watched more on TV this season than in my entire life combined and finally feel like I'm starting to get a pretty good understanding of the rules and strategies involved.  Someone upthread mentioned, though, missing being able to see  one of the goals---I can understand what the complaint is, it sometimes is as hard to follow as a hockey puck (not that I would ever want TV "geniuses" to do anything along the lines of that awful "puck tracker" idea they used for NHL games a ecade or so ago).

Next step will be to actually attend a game sometime.   You've mentioned, W-Devo, that you've attended some games at The Big House---is it an easy game to follow from up in the stands?  Do they use the video boards?

And the overall experience?  Or has someone already added too much of a "WOW! factor and ruined it already?

It's a great sport to watch.  I've been able to make it back to two games in the Big House, and it's definitely a "Wow" experience.  As in...wow, is this place empty.  One of those was the spring game day two years ago when I think they had 5,000 at the lacrosse game, a solid crowd for any UM sport not called hockey, basketball or football.  But even then the place felt pretty empty, as you can imagine.  Yes, they do use the video boards.  The replays help a lot.  They are planning on building a lacrosse stadium which I would assume won't have 109,901 seats.  If it's the right size I hope that lacrosse eventually becomes a fan experience similar to hockey in Yost.  The sports are so similar, it's a definite possibility.  Of course the fact that half the season is played in the winter doesn't help either.  Lacrosse season should be March - June, not February - May.

Nice to see solid progress. I think John Paul is the right guy for the job, but the lack of wins was starting to make me worry he wouldn't get to see it through. Hopefully he continues to build and stays with the program 20+ years

I have a question I feel like only Devotee can answer. If the women's team is all freshmen, how is there going to be any room for future recruiting classes, as 100% of the roster will presumably return next year, and the following year, and the following year? Are they going to cut girls each year or rely on natural attrition?

I'm pretty happy with how far the team has come so far.  They have overcome a lot of challenges (true transition from club to varsity, youth, key injuries, brutal schedule, no facilites of their own, only two recruiting classes so far, etc) to show obvious improvement, both in their record and with the eye test.  This is not a sport where a new team can storm right into ECAC or Big Ten championships and Final Fours, but the trend is positive and by all accounts recruiting is going very well.  The next step is probably playing in more close games against top 30 teams and winning one or two of them.  If they can make the Big Ten tournament next year, which would mean finishing above Rutgers and one of either Ohio State or Penn State, that would be a hell of an accomplishment for a team without four recruiting classes on the roster.  But I don't think a lot of people expected them to make the ECAC tournament this year, so who knows?

It will be interesting to see how they schedule next year.  If the past three years is any indication, there won't be too many games they are favored in.  We know we are getting Hopkins, Maryland, PSU, OSU and Rutgers.  Will the other 9-10 games include ACC, Ivy and Patriot level teams, or will they fill it out mostly with bottom 20 teams?

while next year will be 4 years of 'varsity' recruits, that the levels of the recruits has been improving along that time, see the 4 (I think) freshman that were given rookie honors.

As those guys progress, we will improve immensely.

I would also assume that we continue to recruit at higher and higher levels as the program gets better.

Watched Cal kick Stanfords butt last Saturday and it was a great game to watch.

3 years of recruits, not 4.  The first year they didn't have any.  But that is a good point about the classes improving.  Inside Lacrosse has their 2016 class ranked in the top 5, which is huge for the program but won't impact them for a few years.  To compete with the big boys consistently they will need some of those kinds of classes.
