Michigan interested in Dakota Prukop? (QB Transfer)

Submitted by ScruffyTheJanitor on

Per Chantal Jennings, Michigan is interested in Montana State QB Dakota Prukop, who will graduate this fall.

Jim Harbaugh and Michigan also showing interest in FCS transfer Dakota Prukop. He'll visit Oregon this weekend. Ducks are his No. 1.

Commence "Is John O'Korn any good?" freak out if you are into that sort of thing.

Prukop rushed for 797 yards (5.0 per carry) and 11 touchdowns this season and completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 3,025 yards and 28 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. In 2014, Prukop's first season as the Bobcats starter, he rushed for 13 touchdowns and completed 67 percent of his passes for 17 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Man this guy is going to have to compete with O'Korn AND Taysom Hill????

No on a serious note this look like Tayson Hill of the FCS in terms of stats.  Much more of a dual threat QB than O'Korn which I like to see long term as a Harbaugh goal in terms of type of QB.

If Oregon wants him it is silly to say we shouldnt or it will hurt feelings.  Feelingsball is over.

Support this move!

It's not BS. Rivals reported the exact same thing earlier today. They mentioned Hill, Towles, and Prukop as grad transfer QB's that Harbaugh would go after.

Apparently JH is thinking what I and several other posters have been saying for weeks on this blog, and that is that Michigan is a national title contender next year and is fucked if something happens to O'Korn.

People need to get out of this circa 2000 Lloyd Carr mindset in regards to the QB situation. Harbaugh is going to get as many talented players as he can and let them sort out who should be the starter on the field. This idea we shoud just hand O'Korn the starting spot is ridiuclous.

And since when are the two are mutually exclusive?

Harbaugh's going to sign a great linebacker class this year and I guarantee he'll spend a lot of time during bowl, spring, and fall practices getting McCray and Gedeon as ready as possible. Michigan's base defense was a dime package and they only played two LB's at a time most downs anyways last year.

But QB is far too important a position to have only 1 good option and JH clearly feels like he needs to add someone else there before next year.

We hung a massive 13 pts on OSU.  Drevno should get half the crap Durkin did - where was his "prep" - he had no excuses.

We need ultra talented offensive players too - you know, like they have.  We are not going to shut out OSU or hold them to 14 unless its a torrential monsoon.  We need an offense that can put up 30-40 on OSU.  That is what Stanford had to do to beat USC.... they werent winning those games 17-3.

We need to take advantage of 2016 because 2017 is a rebuild year like it or not - 80% of the entire 2 deep for OSU 2015 will be gone.

Oh please, as if losing our QB for most of the 4th quarter had nothing to do with that.  We went against an elite defense and scored on 3 of 5 possessions before Rudock went down with his injury, despite it being clear to the entire country that we lacked a functional running game by the end of the season against anyone with a pulse.  Drevno doesn't get crap because his side of the ball actually performed up to expectations.

We knew we would have to win a close hard fought game on the strength of an elite defense and whatever Rudock and the offense could give us.  That was the plan at the beginning of the season and it was true at the end of the season as it became clear that we simply had mediocre talent on the line and subpar talent at RB.

We probably do need to score more than 13 points next year.  But it's far from clear to me that bringing in Prukop or Hill (who will certainly be injured by that point) or anyone else off the transfer wire is going to actually help us accomplish that goal.  Meanwhile, we have roster holes to plug elsewhere.

We have a better situation at QB next year than we did when we brought in Rudock.   I think the better strategy with limited scholarship spots is trying to find someone that can contribute at any position in 2017 rather than a guy that's hopefully never sees a meaningful snap at Michigan.  Hell, I'd rather take a shot at another 3-star RB and hope we land Mike Hart.  That would likely be more meaningful in helping us win in 2016 then another QB on the roster.

What other roster holes do we have to fill that are more important than the starting QB?  We have returning starters everywhere but QB and FB. We need depth at LB, but otherwise return experienced players throughout the roster.  The single biggest variance between this being a B1G championship/playoff contender and being another 9-10 win team will be the quality of the QB play.

Are you that confident that O'Korn is an all-B1G caliber QB next year? Even supposing that he is -- are you confident that we'll have a backup QB that can win a game if the starter gets hurt (like OSU and MSU)? Because, those are the things we need to win a championship, not "Uhh, lets just give the next guy a shot and hope for the best."

the B10 title this year.  Rudock played well enough to win it.  Our biggest problems were the lack of a running game (questionable RB play and mediocre blocking) and the inability to stop or slow down a talented read-option offense.  Oh, and one fluke play against Staee.

As far as having a quality backup QB, only the coaches know where we are there.  If Harbaugh has to have an upperclassmen guy, then going after Hill or Prukop might make some sense.

What the hell does Lloyd Carr's mindset in 2000 have to do with O'Korn and the other QB's on the roster?

I kind of liked it when Lloyd was around. Michigan beat Ohio State more, won National Championships, B1G titles, owned Sparty, things like that.

Find another whipping boy fella.

You missed the point. The "Lloyd Carr mindset" that he is talking about is not just handing the QB job to someone, but making everyone compete for the spot 5 star or walk-on. Bama reloads on 5-star QB recruiting every year with that same mentality. Baker Mayfield, a walk-on, competed to get the starting job at Oklahoma. Basically, even though we expect O'Korn to take over the starting role next year, it doesn't hurt to get more competition at the spot.
