Ugh.

I hate this not being on TV. Other than this game, there's one major conference basketball game tonight, no NHL on anything other than the super-premium channels, and no M hockey. This is one of the worst sports TV nights I can remember in hockey/basketball season.

Also, I couldn't convince anyone to actually go to the game with me, seeing as how it's a two hour drive from my apartment on a perfectly good Friday night.

Yea, I don't know why this

Yea, I don't know why this wouldn't be on TV, given the lack of options tonight. I'm reduced to watching Miami play Ohio and hoping they both forefit.

Sounds like we're sleepwalking through the 1st period. Underestimating BGSU. Hopefully Red spits some fire during the intermission to wake the guys up.

Based on what these

Based on what these announcers are saying, it seems like we let up a bit after we scored 2 goals.

Speaking the truth. Merrill

Speaking the truth. Merrill has been like a fucking scrub the past two weeks. Hell Chiasson has been more reliable on the blue line.

I have not been this pissed since we lost to Air Force in the first round a couple years ago.

It is fair to call him out

It is fair to call him out for his lazy play on the blue line against Northern and now BGSU. He is old enough to take some heat for not taking the last two week seriously.

Call him out, sure. But to

Call him out, sure.

But to troll the thread with a bunch of profanity-laced rants that essentially tar and feather a college student is something entirely different.

There's a fine line between being an intelligent fan that can legitimately dissect a player's effort (which, honestly, is not nearly as bad as you think it is), and being an idiot who can't do it without insulting the kid.

Maybe it's a word choice

Maybe it's a word choice thing, but unless by effort you mean effort without meaning performance, I'm curious to know how Merrill hasn't been not nearly as bad as it's appeared the last few weeks.  Not that I have anywhere near the same extent of anger (or mean to excuse it), but Merrill has been less than his normal stellar self for the last 5 games.  (Or at least, allegedly tonight, I wasn't at Bowling Green, but the Daily LiveBlog was unimpressed).  He's been very directly responsible for two HUGE goals against and if he hasn't been more turnover prone than the rest of the D-corp, he certainly hasn't been much better.  Has he had near-brilliant likely goal saving moments in there?  Of course.  He's scored a few points, too.  Kevin Clare's done the same and had a few of those moments last year, too.

The performance of the defense as a whole has been bad recently and Merrill certainly can't shoulder the blame for all of that or even most of that.  But I feel like what you expect from him is consistency, that he's going to make the right play at the right time and do it about as often as humanly possible and right now he's horribly inconsistent.  In a sense, even though he's probably still one of the best performing defensemen of the last few games, he might be the worst, because of the lofty expectations.  If he hasn't been "bad" by the strictest relative definitions, I think he's very obviously been "bad" compared to what he expect from him.  And for the record, I don't think our (or at least my) expectations are completely unreasonable, because he fulfilled them and more for most of his career.

I know I pointed to the goals he was responsible for, specifically, as part of my argument, and I understand even the best defensemen  are going to be made to look foolish as a forward scores, every once in a while, if it was JUST those two bad moments, I probably wouldn't be typing this, but honestly, I've felt straight up uncomfortable for the last couple games when he's been on the ice, like it was our third pairing out there instead of him and I don't like it.

I went to BGSU

and i have to say, i hate the hockey team.  I know it is the only sport BGSU has every one a NCAA National Championship in, but damn the team last in last place every year in the CCHA while i was in school, but yet they would beat Michigan every damn time in BG.  Shit pissed me off,  I would have to hear it from my roommates (Ohio fans) for the next week.  Fuck this sucks.

Better to lose now,

and maybe knock some sense into the knuckheads along the blue line than lose in the tournament.  WMU/FSU in OT right now, if FSU gets even a point, this game matters not so much.  The RPI hit will suck.  Like, a lot.  But hopefully they can make it up with a nice run through the CCHA tournament.

Wow

Wow. I can't say anything else except I'm fucking pissed off.

It's one thing to lose the conference championship, if ferris would win and Michigan would have won. It's one thing to lose it over something you can't control. But to lose it to the worst fucking team in the conference, in the fashion that they did. It's unacceptable.

I think Michigan took bowling green lightly. I'm just very mad right now. western and ferris state are in OT, western is on a 5 minute PP. I hope western gets swept.

I better see a BIG Michigan win tomorrow. Michigan needs home ice. They need 1 point. Get it tomorrow, and worry about the conference tournament.

Just win. Kick bowling green's ass tomorrow and put fear into the other teams around the conference who might play Michigan.

In retrospect I'm glad this stinker wasn't on TV.  I'd be even more pissed if I had actually seen Merrill get stripped of the puck for that goal.

Lose one now, let Red rip

Lose one now, let Red rip them a new one tonight, cram film down their throats all day tomorrow, win by 6 tomorrow night, and ride the wave into March.

And, go.

Ferris in a shootout with

Ferris in a shootout with WMU, so FSU has the point they needed. For CCHA championship purposes (only), this game did not matter.

Still doesn't make

up for how we lost this game, BGSU is terrible and this should have never happened.

All i can say is that we need to beat the living shit out of them tomorrow, like a 6-0 ass kicking.  And i will still be pissed about this game.

At least...

I was just listening on the radio stream rather than actually watching. Easier to be detached from a frustrating night of hockey. Unfortunately, as Brian has pointed out, that's the way this team is this year. Let's just hope they find that fire again down the stretch...

western wins the shootout and

western wins the shootout and is now tied with Michigan in 2nd place at 47 points.

Michigan must win tomorrow to clinch home ice. western has to play at ferris.

I don't think western will beat them.

I want to see a 5 goal win tomorrow by Michigan. I rather Michigan get their loss out now the more I think about it, but to me, the goal is to win the conference. Then if Michigan can win the conference tournament, great but if they win the conference they'll be more than fine for the NCAA Tournament. And obviously the ultimate goal, the National Championship.

Please win tomorrow Michigan.

Right now notre dame leads

Right now notre dame leads state 1-0. The game is on CBSS. state is trying to hold onto their first round bye. Hope notre dame beats them.

notre dame is one game from being .500. No way in hell they make the NCAA Tournament unless they pull a 2009-10 Michigan and win the conference tournament.

northern right now is kicking lake state's ass. Doesn't really matter.

When I feel bad about tonight, I think about how bad the 5 hockey fans ohio actually has must feel. They have won ONE game in the 2012 calendar year. They went from running away with the conference and pretty much locking up a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament to sliding down the toilet in the standings and probably won't make the NCAA Tournament.

I have a gut feeling that

I have a gut feeling that Michigan is going to come out tomorrow and take bowling green to the shed.

This was not Michigan Hockey tonight. Absolutely wasn't. I expect Michigan to come and belt those SOBs tomorrow and secure home ice. If both Michigan and western win tomorrow, they will be tied at 50 points but Michigan would win the tiebreaker and get the 2 seed because they would have more conference wins than western.

You don't know BG...

I am a very recent graduate of BG, and if I take anything away from their below average athletics, it's that their hockey program will play their ass off against ranked opponents. Tonight personally came as a shock to me. I expected them to get slaughtered by Michigan. Coach Bergeron gets these guys excited for these types of games. Although they are last in the conference, they somehow show up and play their asses off during these types of games. Since tomorrow is senior night, expect a similar effort. These guys play hard when a ranked opponent comes into town.Bergeron will expect and motivate a similar effort tomorrow night from the Falcons. It's a proud program, a proud fanbase, and a school looking for big wins. If BG beats Michigan again, that makes the season for them. Sad, I'm sure for most of you. But for BG, beating Notre Dame and Michigan (possibly twice) in the same season is absolutely huge.

My interests are torn. I remain as neutral as possible. This is difficult.

Go BG/Go Blue!

Was at BG

Absolutely abysmal performance by the defense. They had a ton of doorstep chances they failed to capitlize on that I can't believe we gave up to a team as bad as them. We also flubbed some great oppurtunities of our own, and what do you know, one Hunwick screw-up followed by a completely unacceptable turnover later and we've blown the game.

That pick on Merrill is the type of thing that gets pros sent to the minors for a while. We're not talking about a BG player doing his best Datsyuk impression, we're talking about a complete lack of attention and effort by him and he should be absolutely ashamed.

I hope and am relatively confident Red ripped them a new one in the locker room. If so, I predict we will make them look like a high school team tomorrow, and I hope they will use tonight as a lesson not to give less than 100% going into playoff season.

Great loss.

Seriously.  We played like garbage (from what it sounds) and lost to an inferior team.  This is an educational tool for our young men.  It doesn't matter how much the coaches tell them they have to play their hardest to win.  An embarrassing loss like this puts it back in perspective for the players.

I hate losing out on a league title, but if this helps us out in some intangible way in 4 weeks, then it's all good.

Anyone else think Merrill

Anyone else think Merrill might be on his way out? It seems like he's been playing super unfocused the last weekend or two. I'm wondering if he's mentally checked out. Just a theory but it's very uncharacteristic for him to get torched on goals against teams like Northern and flippin BGSU. wtf?

Possible,

But he's only been back for like 2 months and I think Merrill's the kind of kid that would focus on what he's doing regardless on if he was planning on leaving or not.  It definitely wouldn't surprise me if he left after the season, but I think he still wants to win NOW and is doing/going to do everything he can to win a few championships this season.  The whole D has been "uncharacteristic" lately, it's not like Merrill has been the only culprit, just the most obvious.  I think it's probably something to do with lack of focus, but probably more based on feelings of we're a lot better than you and relaxation than anything else.  That, or the entire D-corp is suffering from an unholy terror of a flu bug.

I think we have to give it another week or so, see if he doesn't get back on track, or more especially if the rest of the D cleans it up a bit, but he's still making sloppy mistakes, then maybe this has more truth.  But I'm more inclined to think it's just general laxity, with special emphasis on Merrill because he has the farthest to fall and he's the best to he's most susceptible to loosening up a bit.
