Michigan Hockey to Play State at Soldier Field

Submitted by michchi85 on

Great news for us in the Chicago area wanting to see the Michigan Hockey Team.

Outdoor hockey! Michigan will play Michigan State at Soldier Field in Chicago on Feb. 7. The game is part of the Hockey City Classic.

That still kinda supports my point.  Chicago names itself "Hockey City" - no coincidence Detroit's nicknamed Hockeytown for a decade+, but brings in out-of-state teams for this event.

Chicago only suddenly likes hockey and they'll forget it exists when the Blackhawks slip back to mediocrity.

Sure, at this precise moment in time that may be correct.  But let's talk when the Blackhawks are consistently excellent for an entire generation, redefine what it means to be a model franchise, draft and produce great players without having to tank and get the top picks, win 4 Stanley Cups in 15 years (as opposed to 5 in history), etc.

Check the two rosters and tell me who you'd rather have for the next 10 years. BTW, Hawks have won 2 of the last 5 cups and were a goal away from another this year. Detroit had an amazing amazing run. Now they're in the much weaker conference and really old. This next "Generation" is already happening. Compare the two #19s at the same age... Yzerman scored more in a higher-scoring league, but Toews has 29 playoff goals to Yzerman's 17 after 7 years in the league. Toews has 2 cups & 2 gold medals. He's won more awards than Yzerman did at this point. Yzerman won 3 cups total... the building blocks are in place for the hawks to be the 1990s wings or BETTER in a league where it's harder to keep stars together.

Okay, now this is an acceptable argument.  Chicago has had recent success, and has a solid foundation to be good or great going forward.  They haven't done it yet, though.

Also, for what it's worth, I am very optimistic about the Wings' future, especially with the role our young guys played last year.  Pavel and Hank also have a few good years left in them, and the Wings will be hungry to win those guys another Cup.

Too bad about the league change for the rivalry's sake...

Agreed on BOO realignment. Disagree on the Wings future big picture though. I'm not as familiar with their prospects but until they get another couple of top-4 defensemen they're not going to make huge waves in today's NHL. I think that losing the combo of lidstrom and rafalski hurt the wings a lot more than anything else that's happened to them (including the literal hurts of having to play the Griffins as their best team last year).

That's another reason I'm so bullish on the Hawks' continued success - that blueline is built to remain elite for a long time.

Which team has the better gm? Toews and Kane were the #1 and #3 overall picks, obviously the cornerstone for them. Now the Wings roster, Pavel and Zetterberg are like picks 170 and 200. Detroit hasn't had a top pick in over 20 years. It'll be telling to see where Chicago is in 5 years when they have their two pieces and need to make moves or excellent drafting to have depth. Ken Holland is the best gm in hockey.

I am so sick of the Wings are old meme. It is tired and completely false. Outside of Alfie and Cleary, who are the senior citizens on the team? If anything the wings issues are due to youth on the blue line.

Having grown up in Detroit and being a current Chicago resident, I can second being at multiple Hawks games not against the Wings over the last few years where sustained "Detroit Sucks" chants went on.  Never saw anything like that in the D.

That's why the comparison makes sense though, right?  No one is disputing that in the last 5 years the Blackhawks and MSU have been better than the Wings and Michigan.  But the logic that Spartan fans use is that anything more than 5 years ago is ancient history, living in the past, and doesn't matter.

This is the third year of the "Hockey City Classic". The first year it was held in Chicago and the event creater is a Chicago based company called Intersport so I'd say it has a lot to do with Chicago. I also find it funny that they call it "Hockey City" but have to bring in two Michigan teams.

So that's why it's taking so long to announce the TBA on the schedule.

So Michigan will play this schedule against state

  • 1/30 vs. state at JLA
  • 2/7 vs. state at Soldier Field
  • 3/13 at state
  • 3/14 vs state

All this means is we get to kick their ass at 4 different locations.
