Michigan Hockey: Jack Randl Commits to Michigan

Submitted by Fnrmerse on
According to chatter across the internets he was a high prospect for the 2016 OHL draft. He has 5 points in 4 games this year. He was born in 2000, that's crazy to think about, anyway glad he chose Michigan. Very happy for the young man.  That's exciting.

But 15?  At best this kid is a sophomore in H.S.  And the head coach he's committing to will undoubtedly be gone by the time he enrolls... in 2018.

*shrug*

Cool!  See you then, Jack.

Thanks for the info, gentlemen.  I don't pay too much attention to hockey recruiting.

After reading that link with the CHL restrictions, it's obvious why college coaches need to get after these guys and offer this young - to prevent them from opting for the OHL and killing their NCAA eligibility.  Makes sense from M's perspective.

But if the player is set on playing collegiately, there's really no reason for him to commit so early, is there?  A verbal to a college doesn't preclude him from playing Juniors.  He can change his mind and join a CHL team whenever.  Or he can flip his commitment at any time to any other school before his signing period in 2017.

I guess the bottom line is it's still just a verbal from a 15 year old for 2018.

to commit now. But when other kids in your class are committing, some of the schools will no longer be an option. It's like the other sports in that regard, just accelerated.

College hockey recruiting can be a fickle thing. There are not a lot of spots for a lot of kids with not a huge amount of difference between them. Most kids are given a pretty firm deadline--"Accept our offer by Wednesday or it's off the table"--and once a team moves on, odds are good they aren't coming back. College hockey is also different from football or basketball in that not all scholarshis are equal;they can be split into whatever increments a team wants, so by waiting, you might not get offered as much money down the road.

I definitely can't see Kenny Johnson playing for Michigan next year, and maybe ever playing there depending on who the next coach is.

Why the two neg votes on WD for publishing factual information, literally a table? Fantastic phenomenon transpiring here. Fantastic and ignorant.
