Michigan Hockey @ #7 Lowell Game Thread

Submitted by gwkrlghl on

Well WolverineDevotee has sworn off mgoblogging and I haven't seen CenterIce much this year. Perhaps this will be me talking to myself...

#14 Michigan (1-2-0) at #7 UMass-Lowell (2-0-1).

Michigan should probably be happy with a split this weekend (also @ #12 BU). Lets see how this goes. JT Compher is playing tonight FWIW (he was in doubt).

Awesome that the offense found their footing. That line of Kile-Larkin-Hyman looks like it might be lethal

The defense & goaltending remains concerning for whatever reason. Giving up 3+ GPG is not where you want to be

Michigan's star recruit Kyle Connor became the Youngtown Phantoms All-Time leading scorer tonight. 128 points in 126 games, and the 3rd player in USHL history to score 50 goals before turning 18.

Sparty came on strong at the end, outshooting BU 14-9 in the third. From the audio, it sounded like BU's goalie made some key saves near the end of the game.

Now, it would be nice to keep the MSU sports losing streak going tomorrow afternoon in East Lansing.

GO BLUE!

I was at the game tonight, so I figured I'd share a few impressions:

* The amount of time Michigan spent in the Lowell zone made the Michigan offense often look like a power play even when playing at even strength. Can't overstate how well they controlled most of the game.

* The goals we did give up were a little concerning, though. I'm no hockey expert, but there appeared to be some pretty obvious defensive breakdowns on at least 2 of the goals, where Lowell was able to get a guy right to the net for an open look, with no Michigan player around to even bother the guy or break up the pass. The last Lowell goal (I think) was the only one that seemed to come from a sustained offensive attack.

* Watching Racine reminded me a little bit of watching Blackburn back in the day. He'd make some good saves, and then appear to kind of fall asleep in net and let an easy one in or have a near miss whistle by him without any reaction. There were some times where he obviously had no idea where the puck was, even if it was right in front of him.

All in all, a really fun game to watch and a solid win. Let's hope they can keep it up against BU, and let's hope Lowell gets their heads on straight and sticks it to MSU tomorrow.

hockey is my favorite sport and I can never watch the games. I don't have cable or satellite (even if I did I doubt whatever channel it is on is broadcasted in Denver) and there are never any streams for the games. I know there is a radio feed, but hockey is a terrible radio sport. It is so fast with so many things going on it has to be watched.

The really depressing stat is that the Michigan hockey team probably scored more tonight than football team will score tomorrow...
