Yeah, right, it was Beilien who told Manny to catch fire and Stu to finally hit a clutch three. That was all him.
Beilien didn't change his approach at all, players catching fire and actually making some clutch shots brought us back....NOT COACHING.
Are you arguing that B's coaching has been fine all season and the players just haven't played well, or are you arguing that the players nearly won despite B's coaching?
In this game. Our offense didn't change at all. We came back when Manny caught fire and started hitting contested threes, running bank shots, and fall aways w/ 6'10" dudes in his face. That was the only offense we could get, and that is an indictment of the coaching.
On the flip-side though, our "shooters" haven't had the distinct ability to make baskets from anywhere on the court for large portions of the season...that isn't the coaches fault. Not really the players' faults either I guess, slumps / cold streaks are what they are.

We had an underachieving basketball team lose in a heartbreaking fashion to the #1 team in the conference in a game they were down 10 points.

I'm at work so I couldn't see it but my ESPN Gamecast was on 30 sec. refresh. After Manny Harris hits his shot to put Michigan up by 2 with the 3 seconds left I call a fellow Michigan fan co-worker, he pickes up I greet with "HEY BUDDY, GUESS WHAT?!?!" then in the middle of the greeting the screen refreshes and in a total tone reversal I follow with "oh, never mind, bye."

like the dickens. Reading that Manny put us up by two, imagining the chaos, OSU only having 2.2 seconds to do something...then the first 4 entries I read are "no" "no" "no" "no". Clearly something went wrong, was there a foul? Did someone hit a two and tie the game? Surely they didn't hit a three as I'm sitting here wondering wtf has happened. And then it was true.
The mind can be a terrible thing...I haven't felt like that since the CU game...no, this might feel worse...

How do you not put someone on the ball on a length of the court entry? Ever since Hill-to-Laettner (which, BTW had 2.1 secs left vs. this 2.2 secs) everyone knows you put a big guy on the ball to make the entry pass difficult. If there were 5 or more secs left, fine. But there is literally going to only be one pass, the entry pass, in this scenario - why not make it as difficult as possible, b/c if it's slightly off, that eats up time?
Well, I shouldn't say EVERYONE knows to put someone on the ball. Coach B doesn't. A sad display by someone who supposedly knows fundamentals.

Ok, everyone seems to be tearing apart Beilein for the defense played on the last 2.2 seconds of the game.
Let's be honest - even if Turner was wide f'ing open with no pressure on him whatsoever, he makes that shot MAYBE 15% of the time. Given the amount of pressure, the running start, and a hand half-in his face, he makes that shot 1 out of 20 times.
We got terribly unlucky. In your sudden hatred of Beilein, keep in mind that we had a 95% chance of everyone suddenly being ecstatic about Michigan basketball. I understand the anger has to go somewhere, but seriously, calm down with the Beilein-bashing. There were 39 minutes and 58 seconds of coaching outside of the game-winning shot.
Turner was not hurried in a his leadup to the shot, and it was barely contested (it was Novak or Douglass or someone similarly short who - understandably b/c you don't want to foul in that situation - put his hands in the vague vicinity of Turner). That is why you HAVE to put someone on the ball. I would guess Turner could make that shot 3 out of 10. It was dead-on swish. Hell, Turner got a better look than the guy from WVU last night against Cincy, which is sad, b/c OSU had to go the whole court, while WVU was inbounding from the side.
Most great players (and Turner is great; he'll go no worse than #3 in the draft) can make 30 to 40 foot shots if they're in-control and not shooting with a hand directly in their face. Beilen royally screwed up. We didn't get unlucky -- we gave the person with the most skill on the court a decent chance to beat us and he did.
You say 3 out of 10 times he would make that shot. I say 1 out of 20. We're probably both exaggerating, but even if what you say is true, we had a 70% chance of winning that game given what resulted. That, my friend, means that it is unlucky to lose that game.
I'm not at all defending our strategy in the last 2 seconds. My point is that it's ridiculous to only focus on 2 seconds out of 2400 seconds - yes, it's the most important 2 seconds of the game, but certainly not more important than the other 2398 combined. If you want to criticize Beilein's coaching for all 40 minutes, fine, but the focus on just this aspect is absurd.
This outburst of hatred reminds me of when people get irrationally pissed at a quarterback for getting sacked or falling down on a Hail Mary attempt...completely forgetting that if he didn't fall down or get sacked, there was a 2% chance of success.
I agree I don't know how often Turner (or similarly skilled player, like Wall) would make that shot, but I'm confident it's more than 5%. It was an uncontested 35 foot shot. Look at his form - it wasn't a heave (a la a Hail Mary or a half court shot). He just stroked it and swished it.
And, to be honest, if this was a Kordell Stewart situation, which truly was a 5% (or less) situation, I wouldn't be nearly as disappointed in the coach. Real upset, yes, but not at the coach. There are just a few times during the game where in-game coaching really matters and usually those are after timeouts, as you can literally tell players what to do. And what he told the players to do (not guard in-bounds, etc) gave the other team a much higher chance for success than OSU deserved to have. If Turner would have hit a 50 foot shot falling down, that would truly be a "Michigan hating God" situation and not a bad move at all by Beilein.
This is not hatred. It is just complete disbelief that a universally acknowledged basketball teacher would screw something up so basic. His strategy seemed to be "hope he misses the shot" as opposed to "let's actively try and prevent them from doing something." I need more than crossing my fingers as a coaching strategy.
My comparison was:
People freaking out on Beilien for the last 2 seconds of game that we had a 70%-95% chance of winning up until the shot was released
is equivalent to
people freaking out on Forcier (for example) for falling down on a Hail Mary play while we're down by 5, despite having a 5% chance of winning until the play was run.
People walking out of the stadium only remember Forcier falling down (again, hypothetically) as the only important part of the game, just as people on here seem to be blaming the last two seconds as the only important part of the game...not putting the rest of the game into proper perspective.
Also, Turner shoots 29% from three-point range. It was a great shot. It was also an incredibly lucky shot. Turner is a fantastic player, but he's not a fantastic outside shooter. Simply because he's (deservedly) a POY candidate doesn't automatically mean that he's amazing from anywhere on the court.
These past two years are proof that we are Job. I'm not very well versed in the old testament so I'm not sure what happens when we survive all this.

After this kind of tragic event I would not be surprised if we found out later today that we are being hit with the death penalty, Manny is leaving, and Red is retiring. Can we please just have one day were everything comes crashing down instead of prolonged agony?

It's fitting isn't? Coach B is a good coach but that was poor coaching on the last shot. You dont double but just go man and put some pressure. At that point it is a half court shot. You have had a crappy season and if you foul.. you foul but you dont let him just have that shot. UM might as well have stayed on the bench.
