Michigan has worn Maize uniforms before

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

It's happened before.

No, not this widely circulated mid-2000s fake artwork

From MVictors-

The only change in the typical blue uniforms before 1949 came in 1928.  As Michigan planned to play Navy in Baltimore, the Midshipmen refused to wear any other color than their traditional blue.  Therefore, Michigan came out in bright yellow jerseys with blue numerals.  The team was said to look like canaries, and the uniforms were put away after the 6-6 tie.

Harbaugh could be more of a mad genius then we originally thought. These uniforms being associated with the Minions could be gold. Imagine all the 4-10 year old kids who see them and lock on to them being Minion Jerseys....Harbaugh just locked in thousands of future Michigan fans.

Exactly. We've warn them before so there is no need to experiment with trying them again. It's already been done.

On the other hand, I guess you can now call these maize jerseys "1928 Throwbacks".

It's not as legit as that sounds though.

on it?  Not sure hockey ever wore all maize.  At least the jerseys had some details added ... and a Block "M" or "Michigan".  Players seem to like so maybe they look better live than in images.  I was expecting all white and ok with that one.

I feel like because you were one of the people who broke the news, you've felt this subconcious need to defend the decision for them to wear this garbage.

Just admit they are horrible, move on, and let's talk about things that will actually make us EXCITED for GameDay's arrival. And just stop making new threads for your own attention, seriously. There are plenty of threads already to put this in.

We need three threads on Maize uniforms.

We do.

Please let us know ASAP if Michigan wore highlighter yellow uniforms during practice in 1909.

and start a thread on it.

FUCKING UGLY! Why just why do we continue to go backwards w the alternates while most other blue bloods look good or just don't do it. Hot Garbage these look like....

Its not like they are messing with the helmets. The helmet is the iconic piece of the uniform. I don't care what they wear below the neck so long as the helmets have wings. Give me grey alternates next year, I don't care. If it gets the kids pumped up, great. This isn't wrecking any tradition. There is a segment of this fanbase that gets way too worked up over this perceived sanctity of things that aren't actually sacred. I'm dancing on your lawn. Neg away.

Spot on. Nike is paying Michigan $170 million to provide their jerseys. We have the highest paid coach in the league.  His salary not only doesn't come from the university, it doesn't even come from a self-sufficient AD.  The majority comes from Nike.

Say what you will about Nike, say what you will about the Big Ten. Start a GoFundMe and outbid them next time if you want a say in it. I enjoy our Athletic Department making money hand over fist while not having advertisements and Kraft Noodles.

I think people would be more onboard if the unis looked good (even reasonable).  They do not.  It's just plain weird.

The home unis are iconic in many ways.  And it is traditional to wear school colors, so grey is out.

But let's just start with something good.  I think the jerseys would've been acceptable had they been paired with blue pants.  All-yellow looks... odd.

Note to Nike, the all yellow look belongs 65 miles to the south, in Toledo. Keep that mustard bottle out of Ann Arbor.

You know there are 125+ FBS teams? You know there are fewer really distinct colors than that? We aren't imitating Toledo. We aren't imitating Cal. We aren't imitating WVU. This is Michigan showcasing Michigan's secondary color on a jersey. Get. Over. It.

Oregon would come up a lot more often than Michigan if you flew around the country and asked random four- and five-star recruits about who has the best uniforms.

To be clear, I don't like them, and I'd rather see the traditional uniforms. That said, Harbaugh knows how the game works, and he's playing along.

...and we've also lost a lot of recruits to teams that wear flashy, Oregon-like uniforms.

Do we recruit at a high level? Yes. Could we recruit at an even higher level if we did a few flashy things the fan base might bitch and moan about? Also yes.

You old dirt bags! Let it go man! What team in sports doesn't wear their colors in many different combinations? If you don't like the color then pick another team! It's an alternate and it's sharp! I don't want it all the time but I'm excited about the change, just win.
