Michigan gets Trolled by the Ohio Marching Band

Submitted by thisisme08 on

Slow day on the board and I saw this while browsing various blogs and thought it was worth a share, as IIRC we did something similar with the Wizard of Oz a few years back.

The premise is that the Michigan Martians (so thats where I put my giant maize and blue flag at) kidnap a Ohio cheerleader and then the band sets about on a journey to get her back....more than likely she's a blonde and Keith Stone says we only think about the brunette girls so nice try Ohio.

at the same time, the new ones we have were an absolute must once the towers went up.

I missed the original black box scoreboards when the last ones came out more than I miss the last ones since the newest installations.

Yeah, actually.  I went to take a picture of the scoreboard after the Illinois game because it's been forever since I've been to a complete game, and the score wasn't there.  Same thing happened during the game... I was wondering how many points we had, and my wandering eyes were unable to locate a posted score anywhere in the building, because a video was being shown.  Why do we even bother calling them scoreboards anymore?

The OSU band puts ours to shame. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that its about the only thing they have going besides being a top notch clown college. In all seriousness, our band pales in comparison to some of the things I've seen them do. Stupid Ohio!

Oops, I replied to the wrong comment below. I think the key difference between the two directors is football knowledge.

Speaking as someone who played for three years under Nix and one with Boerma, I think Boerma's focus is on creating a fine musical performance, but doesn't understand football especially well.

Nix really loved and understood football. His understanding was that our job was to rile up the crowd and help our team win. We may not have played at a symphonic band level, but we were loud enough to hear and the performances had a lot of spirit. He called for us to play the right songs at the right times, held us from playing temptation if it was clear the opposing team was going for it on 4th down, etc.

I loved all four years in the MMB, and I have a healthy respect for both directors. However, I really believe today's band could use some of the push-the-team-on-to-victory spirit of the Nix days, even if the cost is a little bit of the musical proficiency.

You summed up my feelings exactly. Many times, I am confused when we play "Temptation" after an inappropriate 3rd down...then either they get a 1st down and we look stupid, or we play it again after 4th down. Also, I remember that under Nix, the band would occassionally play "Livin' on a Prayer" at a key moment towards the end of the game to rile up the student section. That has been replaced by "Seven Nation Army" and other RAWK music, which I guess isn't really the new director's fault. I also remember more entertaining half-time shows under Nix, and I haven't really been a huge fan of the newer ones.

Our band has been consistently good over the years, and it is great now; I simply prefer the pre-2007 band.

this and the video game show they have done this year? Honestly this is the first year i have seen any osu band videos posted anywhere, the mmb has done lady gaga (which went viral), blues brothers, ferris buller, wizard of oz, viral videos, etc etc etc over the last few years.

People also forget the awesome Monty Python and the Holy Grail show we did.

The biggest difference between the band now under Boerma and before under Nix (imo) is that Nix understood the game of football better and knew what songs to play and the right times to play them. There also was a greater emphasis on volume, which I think is lackign these days. Good intonation is nice, but if no one can hear it, who cares? I'm not saying turn into UW's band and just blast away drunkenly at all times, but some volume to get more fans involved would be nice. It makes me sad when I'm in the stands and can;t really hear the band.

I'm starting to get annoyed by this. Maybe I'm just not very bright, but my first reaction to this thread title was to wonder why Ohio University's marching band would troll us. That isn't ignorance (willful or otherwise) of the "Ohio" meme, it's legitimate confusion. MSU isn't Michigan, and OSU isn't Ohio. I know you guys aren't going to stop on my account, but what else is the internet for if not unsolicited, irrelevant opinions?

Imagine traveling to Ohio from West Lafeyette...and the host team spends halftime trolling a Big Ten team that isn't from West Lafeyette.  Demoralizing.

And then the last drive plus OT happen.

Technically sound trolling really, though, and overall, a mildly amusing show on some levels. I think the only thing that really bothered me was an over-animated narration of "The Time Warp" and an overall lack of cohesion for the program.

I will agree with someone above, however - it seems to me, however, that if anyone is getting trolled here, it would be Purdue fans, as it seems the implicit message is that they barely register in the psyche of Buckeye fans and...oh...the everybody time warp while you're at it.

I would rather chew on a ball of aluminum foil than watch a band dressed like cadets in the Police Academy movies. Proctor! Holy shit those uniforms are queer.

Not a bad production and pretty harmless.  It's not like the MMB hasn't come up with similar shows that pick on Ohio and MSU.  I remember the Wizard of Oz parody a few years back where we slammed pretty much every B1G school.

Actually, the execution wasn't bad, but it seemed to lose steam after the beginning.  They had an idea and a conclusion but the middle part didn't really make much sense.

OSU still has one of the top three B1G bands (along with M and MSU).

There has been lots of talk about Michigan's rivalries with ND and MSU lately, but Ohio State will always be enemy number one. I like their halftime show. It sort of fuels the rivalry. I remember reading the funny B1G as Family Guy article that someone linked a few months ago, and it said Lois/Michigan only has eyes for Peter/Ohio State. Well, it looks like the feeling is mutual. I love it.
