Michigan Friendly Bars to catch game in Boston?

Submitted by shawnducati on

Guys,

Anyone know a good Michigan Bar in Boston? Harvard Square would be good too. Here for the Pats/Lions game Sunday, but want to get out in the city and catch us play Maryland tomorrow.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

I would not recommend that you head to Harvard Square tomorrow.  It is Harvard-Yale weekend.  The place will be completely overrun.  Huge crowds for every restaurant and bar -- huge crowds just to walk on the sidewalk.  And most of them will not care one bit about Michigan-Maryland.

However, ESPN Gameday will be there.  If you want to be among gigantic crowds of people talking college football, then perhaps Cambridge is the place you should head.

While I agree with most of what you said, the game and Game day will in Allston across the river. I would imagine everything else will still be bad though. I think I took the T back from Boston to Harvard last time it was at the Stadium. I don't remember it being terrible, but it wasn't good either.

McGreevy's is the place to go this year.  I have been going to Sweet Carolines and Tavern in the Square for the last four years (my two sons live in Boston and I live in NYC).  McGreevy's is more quaint and pretty solid over all.

Tomorrow’s events at McGreevy’s also include the Oklahoma-Kansas game, because Oklahoma’s Alumni Club of Boston also uses McGreevy’s as their go-to bar.  It might be a little tight at McGreevy’s between noon and 3:30 tomorrow, but if you want to be with Michigan alumni and fans, then McGreevy's is the place to be.

Even if you decide not to use McGreevy’s for your Michigan-Maryland game viewing, go early to McGreevy’s, just so you can say that you’ve been there, because it’s considered to be America’s oldest sports bar. If you’re also a fan of The Dropkick Murphys and you'd like to be "Going Out In Style" in Beantown tomorrow, then McGreevy's should be a mandatory destination.

If you’d prefer what might be a less crowded venue for the game AND if you’re also a baseball fan (or just would like to visit one of America’s great sports landmarks), consider heading west from McGreevy’s on Boylston Street to the end at Charlesgate East (across from the Massachusetts Historical Society building) and turn right at Charlesgate East.  Go left at the end of Charlesgate East onto Ipswich Street. The road curves around and you’ll turn right on Landsdowne Street and walk towards The Green Monster.

Take in a 60-minute tour of Fenway Park (costs $17) and then head to Cask ‘n Flagon at the corner of Landsdowne Street and Brookline Avenue to watch the game.

Not sure if you're staying in Harvard, but anyway, if you're trying to get to McGreevy's take the 1 bus from Harvard (it goes around the yard) and get off at Hynes. If you're going to Tavern, take the Redline towards Alewife for a stop to Porter. Harvard to Porter is walkable too.
