Michigan Football Summer Camp in CA?

Submitted by umbig11 on

I read a very interesting topic this morning on a Rivals message board regarding summer camps for Michigan Football. The poster is very credible. A University of Michigan graduate that has built a very successful company around building and developing databases of H.S. athletes for universities and recruiting services. He stated that a source indicated that Michigan was in the process of setting up a summer camp in CA much like Penn State did last year in GA with Georgia State as the host.

There was some speculation that it could be The University of San Diego where Harbaugh used to be the head coach. Additional speculation was the possibility of a LA school where there is some of the best talent in the state or the Bay area which would draw many of the top prospects in Northern CA. He also noted that a person close to the program indicated that he would not be surprised if 50% of the '16 recruiting class would be comprised of TX and CA athletes. He went on to say that the current staff has the most connections in the following 5 states: CA, TX, FL, MI, & OH.

Some of you may recall that the SEC was not very happy with Penn State's James Franklin and his tactics last year with regard to co-hosting a camp in GA. I have linked a couple of those articles. In addition, I hope JH does set up  a camp in CA and draw some elite talent from the state.

Why not take advantage of it and build a pipeline from a talent rich state? Harbaugh and his staff have a ton of connections out there. I thought it was interesting that the SEC coaches complained so much last year about PSU that they asked Commissioner Slive to try and close the loophole.

Does anyone else just sit back and marvel that we actually got Harbaugh? It still doesn't feel like real life. It will all sink in and the universe will explode when he is on the field for the first time in the public eye as a part of the program in almost 30 years.

How are you blaming the NFL GM's? They had less than 24 hours to even talk to Harbaugh before he was on a plane to Ann Arbor. He turned down MORE money from NFL teams in order to return here. Point being, Harbaugh obviously wanted to come to Ann Arbor more than anything else. How can you put blame on the GMs in the NFL for that?

Because 1. They have a lot more cash to throw at him than Michigan if they wanted him. 2. It was the worst kept secret he was gone from SF, a lot of team could have tried to make a trade for him, he would have had to agree on it of course, but I would have given up a 1st rounder for him to be the lions coach and work with stafford. Then again I don't know if anyone even tried so I guess I'm wrong on assuming.

1. They DID offer him more money, and he turned it down to come to Michigan. This is common knowledge and has been stated in multiple interviews by both Harbaugh and Hackett. 2. While it was common knowledge that he was gone from SF, there is a tampering rule. Another NFL team can not negotiate with Harbaugh while he is still employed by SF. There is also something called the Trade Deadline. Which had passed and doesn't resume until the season ends. Which goes back to my point where teams had less than 24 hours in which to get a deal done before he was signed and delivered to Ann Arbor. Harbaugh turned down MORE MONEY to come to Michigan. He decided in less than 24 hours after SFs season ended to board a plane to Ann Arbor. He clearly had very little interest in remaining in the NFL instead of coming to Michigan. I don't see how you blame a GM for offering Harbaugh $3 million more per year than what Michigan is giving him and Harbaugh turning it down. It is obvious Michigan was Harbaugh's #1 choice from the start. That isn't the fault of any GM or owner in the entire league.

it doesn't work that way for coaches. Nobody in the NFL could talk to him or SF until the season was over, so the 24 hour thing still applies. Plus, trading coaches isn't an actual trade, so rules like the Rooney rule apply. Miami or anybody else would have had to interview candidates before agreeing to the trade, etc. There wasn't enough time for any of that to work. Harbaugh essentially prevented the NFL from being a possibility by taking the job so quickly.

1st statement that the NFL has more cash to throw at coaches than colleges is debatable. The top college coach is Saban at around 7 mil per year.  The top 2-3 NFL coaches are slightly higher at 7.5 mil.  The NFL probably does have more cash than colleges do with NFL revenues topping an estimated 9 billion but it appears that paying coaches more doesn't seem to be a priority at this point.

It really doesn't feel real yet. The process of realizing reality hasn't been expediated by how larger-than-life he has been since he got here, either. I am out here seeing how many pinches it takes before I wake up and he is out there hanging with Garth Brooks, coaching an MLB team, pulling victims from car crashes in treacherous conditions, and tweeting with Judge Judy. I am positive this is a dream and I will wake up to a reality where Richy Hokriguez is sending Nick Sheridan back into the game with multiple concussions, and we are losing to Toledo State University, at home.

you shouldn't be lowering expectations. I know we should all keep our guard up but, this guy really does own a legitimate college football related company. He has supplied data to the Univ of Mich over the years to various coaching staffs. He has been spot on every time he posts anything Michigan related. However, I do respect your concern. There is a lot of BS out on message boards. Go Blue!!

There are a number of good programs that have done it very successfully. He has the connections to pull this off. There is no reason that this shouldn't be permitted to make it more convenient for the players. It's only those who want to lock their state up that have issues with it. Harbaugh would have people from all over coming in and I would bet it would lead to many official visits to Michigan.

I did a little more research on the source. His name is Jim Stefani and he owns "The Recruiting Brain," yes, that is the name of the company. It's basically, a centralized data source of high scool athletes for colleges and universities. Only affiliated personnel or coaches from a college or university can subscribe to the service.

Being new on the site and in the learning stages of all things recruiting, what exactly takes place at these "satellite" camps. Also, what are they like 2 weeks long? I get the principle that they are closer to recruits and more likely to draw elite players. Are they worked like an NFL combine or taught what it takes to be a Michigan player?

The staff gets to evaluate a prospect first hand. They get to build a relationship with a potential recruit and judge character for themselves. In addition, these camps provide competition at the highest levels. It is easy to see who has the speed, technique, and height/weight to perform at the college level. Finally, many HS coaches are asked to participate in the camps. Further developing ties between High schools and the university. I hope that answers part of what you were asking.

I get the sense that Harbaugh is a god in Cali so this makes a lot of sense esp. with all of the elite QBs and skill players in that state. Those QBs would climb over each other to get time with JH. Their parents would get to know the staff too...so much upside to this move.

do we know if a school can co-host more than one camp? with JH's ability to attack each day with unusual levels of enthusiasm, he could probably handle more than one of these out of state camps.

The biggest reason I love this is because it shows that Harbaugh is going to do it his way. Not the AD's way, not the Regents way, not some booster, or some other admin. I dont think this has been the case at Michigan for the last 10 years or so.
