Michigan Field Hockey thrashes #20 Iowa, 4-0

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Oh how the tables have turned in the Michigan-Iowa series.

After Iowa won the first 31 games in the series, Michigan is 22-9 against the Hawkeyes since. Michigan got their first win against Iowa in 1997 when former Iowa player Marcia Pankratz became Michigan's head coach.

Michigan dominated Iowa last season, and did so again tonight at Ocker Field.

Shannon Scavelli scored first for Michigan, which was followed by two Lauren Thomas goals to give Michigan a 3-0 lead at halftime with a 10-3 edge in shots.

Katie Trombetta scored on a corner in the second half to give Michigan a 4-0 lead, and keeper Sam Swenson did the rest of the work by stopping all 8 Iowa shots to give Michigan the 4-0 shutout win.

With tonight's win, Michigan has now beaten the Hawkeyes in back-to-back years and 8 of the last 9.

#16 Michigan moves to 10-3, 4-1 in the B1G and will play #9 Stanford on Sunday in a rare neutral site game in Evanston, IL.

Iowa's typically a strong program - even they're a little off this year, blowing them out like this is a quality win.  Glad to see how well the team has responded after a rough start to the season.  Only one hiccup since, that against an elite Maryland team.  Hope they can keep it rolling and go far in the postseason as well.

Great info, WD.  As I mostly live outside the US (in Italy now), it's difficult to get info on our non-big 3 sports teams.  Actually, even when I was in the US, I never heard much, either.  The education and background that you and other posters post on this site is great. Many thanks.

For every hour players spend on the practice field, they spend an hour and a half in the classrooms, offensive line coach Brian Ferentz said. Those classrooms overlook the weightroom facility, which isn't exactly a subliminal message. What Iowa football does and is comes from the weightroom, where players workout all year.
