I'm torn. 99% of me thinks it's a horrible idea. The other 1% of me knows that opposing teams would hate it even more than I would, which makes me think we should do it.

But you're selling me a little short by assuming that I can't control my own appendages independently. (Of course I can't, but I'm still a bit offended. I couldn't find any pictures of an insectosaurus bro-hug though.)

And yes. I Googled "Insectosaurus bro hug."

While I think it would annoy the opposing team, it would be only a matter of time before every televised game would sound like the world cup.  Please, for the love of college football, ban the vuvuzela from U.S. import.

I liked how the "O-H" chant went down when I was on South U the night before the game. It was something like this:

3 or 4 people wearing red: "O-H"

The rest of the street / sea of Maize: "F---- YOU"

I also saw one of Them get literally knocked flat in line for a bar by a girl. It kicked ass. Can't wait to have them back.

I think the Michigan response to the cheer is fantastic.  My personal plea though is that Michigan folks should respond to the "O-H" / "I-O" with a hearty "Can't spell state!" Because, well... you know it's true.

Seriously the people busting out that cheer go to Ohio STATE University, not Ohio University (and the few folks I've met living in Cincinnati who go to Ohio U, really don't want to be confused as OSU grads.

Anyways, that's always my response.

it is a bit perplexing how these are suddenly all the rage. vuvuzelas have been around at sporting events for decades. why is this world cup so different? anyone know or have guesses? just a cheap gimmick?

global television viewership of the average sporting event in Africa that is not the World Cup = 97

estimated cumulative global television viewership of the 2010 World Cup  = 800,000,000+

It's like those thundersticks.  They were all over asia for years before they got popular during the 1996 Olympics and then started showing up in MLB and (most notably) NBA arenas almost ubiquitously.

Unfortunately those things are super cheap online and its the new "hip" thing to have.  I've been putting time in trying to dissuade everyone I know from buying them, but the uconn game is probably going to have a ton of them, then I hope people see how much they suck and we don't see much more of them.

this is the most intimidating thing we do as students...

every student loves the chant....

i guess its bad sportsmanship, but it is nothing close to what other great fanbases do (cough, cough wisconsin or us at yost)

really i wish our student section was a ton more hostile and loud to make up for the people throughout the rest of the stadium that seem to think they are watching a mid-leval pga event

and ps fuck vuvuzelas ... i thought they were awful last yr for the confeds cup, they are awful this yr, and trust me, the big ten has already banned noise makers like these, they will not be allowed in and thank god for that

what is more intimidating ...

certainly not keys, or the band "putting the hex on" on third down

certainly not our copycat kickoff routine

rapping with eminem was fun, but its new and not that scary

seriously, its the only time we as a section do something "anti-pc"

even if you dont like it (my social group loves it), i seriously want to know what you think is more intimidating that we actually do?

To be clear, I despise the key-jangling just as much.  I never participated in that when I was a student.  You're watching football, a gladiatorial competition, and you're going to stand there limp-wristed, jangling keys?  It's fundamentally emasculating.

Nothing is more intimidating that regular old noise from your mouth.  But you need to chant something that the whole stadium can get behind.  Having 20% of the stadium chant "You suck!" is useless.

i maintain that it looks and sounds great when we do the "claw" (not a atl braves chop as many ppl think it is) and chant you suck as the opposing punter comes on

i admit i think it is even better in basketball for an opposing teams timeout after we make a run though

also, i agree noise is great, but sometimes you need to be in unison with your fellow fans and the band

"but the uconn game is probably going to have a ton of them"

Well.

That sucks.   For once, I am happily in the camp of the "old fart alumni" and if the stadium does sound like that webpage, I'm thinking the alums will have those horns banned right quick.

Oh and  "Get off my lawn!"
