Michigan Debate Vies For NC

Submitted by MaizeMN on
Stumbled across an interesting article about the MICHIGAN debate team. After finishing second the last 2 years, the Maize and Blue tandem of  Joseph Krakoff and William Morgan are hoping the 3rd time is the charm.

This April, the Champions of the West take on the “Michigan of the East” in hopes of being crowned the national debate champions of 2016. That’s right, U-M’s No. 1-ranked debate team will face Harvard in a war of words that would leave lesser mortals dazed and confused.

“Our alumni are very competitive; they want Michigan to be No. 1 in everything,” says Aaron Kall, U-M’s director of debate. “And our debate alumni are extremely competitive. This team is certainly aware of those expectations and will do everything we can to meet and exceed them. It would be great if this team could be the ones to bring the national championship home.”

Seconded. GO BLUE!

The third Python series had some gems in it as sketches go even though John Cleese says in interviews that this is least favorite series of the four (the fourth was the one he skipped out on actually). "Argument Clinic" was one of those, I always thought - "Cheese Shop", "Mr. An Mrs. Brian Norris' Ford Popular", "All-England Summarize Proust Competition" and a few others stand out certainly.

Uh oh. SEC commissioner Sankey just complained to the NCAA that Michjgan debaters' use of books to prepare for debates is unfair to SEC debaters who can't read at all. Let's see where this leads . . .

...Harvard intends to employ the "i know you are, but what am I?" strategy. Most pundits feel MICHIGAN should counter with the "i'm rubber, you're glue" retort.

As a long ago 4-year Michigan debater, couldn't be happier to se the Mgoblue community pick up on the current run of debate success - which is amazing. Also see -https://studentlife.umich.edu/parents/article/our-winning-debate-team

If you love debate and Michigan and have a some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket - they can definitely use your financial support (see link at the bottom of the student life article). That's the way you debate! Go blue!

As a long ago 4-year Michigan debater and MGD Blue's housemate for one of those four years, I concur it's great to see the wider UM community supporting the team with the printed word.

As a member of the alumni advisory committee for the Michigan Debate Scholarship Program, I'm going to go ahead and provide a direct link for anyone who wants to support the team in deeds as well as words:

DONATE

It's a tax-deductible gift to the University.

This may border on a "political comment," but I almost crapped myself the other night when Cruz and Rubio got in an argument about who speaks better Spanish, started jawing at each other in Spanish, and Trump was directly right between the two of them. I was positive Trump was going to start personally deporting people... ;-)

"Debates" among politicians aren't remotely real Debate and as a former HS Debater with friends coaching at MSU, UM and other schools, it would be my privilege to donate to the team!

Go Blue!
Go Debaters!!
