Michigan dark secrets

Submitted by chunkums on

The offseason can be a long and difficult time for football fans, but it is a time that generates some really interesting threads occasionally. In light of this, I pose this question to you all:

What are your deepest and darkest secrets relating to your Michigan fandom? Are you a convert from the other side? Do you have any regrettable stories from watching Michigan games? Do you have any dark secrets now?

I'll start: I love Michigan and cherished my undergraduate years there, but next year I start my PhD at...Ohio State.

Being with your team through the good and bad times is one thing. Watching a game that you know is hopeless at halftime is another. Everyone on here supported Michigan in all their games (even this year), but when you're as emotionally invested in a game as I (and I'm guessing many others on this board) are, it actually ruins your weekend to constantly watch Michigan lose.

Sometimes I left early to study when we were getting our ass handed to us because I was supporting the university in other ways (e.g. by giving them thousands upon thousands of dollars so I could learn). If that calls my "fandom" into question and doesn't make me a Michigan Man in spite of having a diploma on my wall, meh, I'm okay with it. I value my education more than your opinion.

I stayed for every game in which I had a choice, but I can't fault people for leaving some games. It's one thing if someone's just drunk and leaves early to keep partying or whatever, but there's no reason anyone needs to sit in the rain and watch UM get pounded by Iowa in 2004 or 05 or whenver it was in what was then the worst home loss in Michigan history.

I used to own a Notre Dame starter jacket, had tons of Notre Dame clothes, enjoyed the Notre Dame fight song, frequented South Bend on a regular basis, and have eaten dinner/hung out with multiple Notre Dame athletes (including football players).  Worst of all, I never realized how disgusting I was even though I was a lifelong Ann Arbor resident and diehard Michigan fan.

I have an excuse though, my eldest sister played basketball for Notre Dame, so I was kinda brainwashed to like ND for 4 years.

I went with my girlfriend and her parents.  They wanted to leave early so I felt obligated to go with them since they got the tickets.  I watched Brabbs kick the winning field goal on a tiny tv @ Brown Jug...

I left early from the Braylon game... you know, this one:

I was so disgusted with how we were playing I couldn't handle it anymore.  The walk back to my apartment was probably the most bittersweet moment of my sports life.  I could hear the damn stadium going nuts.  Man, that was so dumb.  Funny thing is, the guy who left with me is probably the biggest die hard I know.

And ya know, I have never left any sporting event (that I cared about) early since then.

I thought maize was literally "maze" and was convinced Michigan had just taken an unorthodox approach to colors/mascot selection, a la Stanford cardinal/random tree/red.

I love Bucky Badger and I think he's the greatest cartoony mascot in all of college football. I'm glad Michigan doesn't have one, I like the immortal, superhuman omnipresence of the Block M (and the badass title of wolverines"), but for a more silly and personality-filled character, Bucky is the best. Look how angry he is all the time, look at his little angry face lol.

You are really pulling one on the old MGoBlog community.  Nothing quite like being an idiot and then telling everyone else about it.  I'm sure your other "legit" accounts are full of amazing observations.

Also, smart move outing your pattern.  It would be incredibly easy to do a quick query on the upvoting patterns of users and see which 4-5 accounts always upvote the guys who upvote the new accounts.

Like some others here, I couldn't miss a UM football game this year, but I didnt always want Michigan to win. I wanted all the ambiguity about the coaching position to clear away.

I was rooting for the Michigan football program rather than for an individual Michigan team.

I often spent weekends in college driving from Ann Arbor to EL to party with friends. The women were hotter and "easier."

Ditto... A good female friend of mine went to EL.  Many a road trip to go see her and some friends she introduced me to.  Much better scenery in EL (or even Ypsi) than A2.
