Michigan Daily profiles Carol Hutchins

Submitted by justingoblue on

Harbaugh-certified Go Getter Alejendro Zuniga wrote a fairly brief profile of Michigan's winningest coach that I'd recommend taking a look at. It is truly amazing that Harbaugh, Hutch, Beilein and Red are all active coaches at Michigan right now.

On entering Hutch's office:

Your eyes are drawn to the white sheet of paper pinned to the wall behind her right shoulder. It’s a to-do list written neatly in black marker, thick enough so you can clearly read items six and seven:

6. Call in one of my players.

7. Make them cry.

Hopefully Hackett can find a solution for seventeenth and the upcoming eighteenth conference championship teams:

Michigan moved into that new softball center just over a year ago, but there’s already a minor issue. One wall in a conference room is dedicated to celebration photos of all of the Wolverines’ Big Ten-champion teams.

When Michigan won its 17th such title last spring, someone noticed there wasn’t any more space left for their picture.

I once worked for a Hot tub company and delivered her a hot tub. Made a comment about there being some very cute girls on the team. Hutch said they could be as ugly as a dogs behind as long as they win games and make the win column pretty. Asked if she was going to share the new tub with any of her players, she said they can relax in it after championship wins only! Side note... Surprised on her hot tub of choice, being a baller coach I expected a much larger tub. She went with a smaller three person.

I sort of agree. Not exactly an appropriate thing to say to someone who has spent their life fighting what she sees as injustice perpetrated by males. Instead of saying something about how good her team is or how they play, she gets a comment about how cute they are? A perennial top ten power, and all OP cares about is that they're hot? If I were her, I'd have told him to put the hot tub in and GTFO.

This place has become so dramatic... I forgot how touchy people can be here. I only talked about what made the conversation funny... Next time I'll be sure to produce a manuscript of our entire conversation not sparing any details so that not to be chastised. My bad ladies and gents... Coach didn't seem perturbed by our conversation as she joked with us after the fact and gave us a "Go Blue" on our review of customer service. Other things of note that were talked about while said hot tub was being delivered ( so that we all know dRich@mgoblog isn't a dirtbag-pondscum sucking weasel) Things that were asked or talked about -is it a dream come true being a coach at UofM -asked if she had any kids of her own -where's the good eats around the area - Asked whether she was familiar with the Sidewinders (a travel softball team) as I had a girlfriend at the time that played for them -Sold her on higher end chemicals for her tub -Told her she was the best thing to ever come out of East Lansing -What her dogs names were... Edit: The comment about her players being cute and whether she was going to share the tub with them were at two different points of the conversation, not back to back questions lol... If that's what people were so worried about. Sorry if it was received this way. Carry on.

I was having a difficult time believing that the conversation involved "cute players you have there Coach, are you going to have them over to use the hot tub?  Maybe drink a little wine, have a pillow fight?"

After rereading my OP I understand why people got a little worked up... My bad honestly, I'm using my phone and didn't want to post every detail as if it were a diary entry. But now I can laugh at my stupidity for not clarifying, hope the neggers can too. Edit: I even negged my own OP... Sorry for the fuckery.

“I’m here to say, ‘Fall down? Get up.’ That’s what we do. That’s how you grow up.”

This was a nice article and thanks for sharing it.

I have always admired how Hutchins approaches coaching really, and to hear some of the background on where it developed was actually very interesting.

talk about women's sports it's really interesting to read (much too briefly) about her commitment to developing leaders. That, it seems to me, speaks in the same terms we often hear in men's sports. Michigan is lucky to have her walking the walk.

My problem with Title IX is more at the HS level where you have one coach that is trying to improve their program by working their tail off (fundraising) to make sure their kids have the things they need to put a better product in the field. Meanwhile the other coach won't do a thing and then has the audacity to complain that their program's counterpart has this and that. School is forced to comply with Title IX law and the program that did nothing gets new facilities as well. Title IX was needed, no doubt, but to use it as a metaphorical crutch is another issue. Title IX laws need to be reworked. The intent is right, the execution of the law is flawed.
