Michigan cowbell rhythm - TRY #2

Submitted by bdsisme on

With the first home game fast approaching, Michigan fans have begun to break out their cowbells. My friends and I have been arguing about the correct rhythm for the Michigan cowbell strike, and we need MGoUsers to weigh in on this topic.

A few of us think the rhythm in the YouTube video embedded below is correct. Meanwhile, others have commented that it is missing a beat (no pun intended) towards the middle of the chorus(?). What's your opinion? Right, wrong, or close enough?

(embedding in OP is harder than MRob's abs, see first reply)

EDIT: Try #1 was an abomination; Try #2 is 26 posts down -- keep the comments coming!

Others have pointed out that it's too slow, which is correct - but nobody seems to have mentioned the pause between each repetition.  The whole thing is 8 beats, with the final beat   being a full rest for everyone to shout "GO BLUE".  You have to keep that rhythm all the way through, or you'll lose the crowd.

Also, no flourish at the end.  The last repetition is just 7 on-beat hits, and two hits timed with "GO BLUE" for the final beat.  (Or if you're in Crisler, let the claps carry it for the last repetition - go silent with the cowbell until the final two hits for the cheer.)

the cadences above are basically correct.  Do it 3 times + ending for football, 4 times + ending for hockey (in addition to other instances).  Hockey is a bit faster than football, but both should be done decently fast...a lot of times people do it way too slow.  If you aren't sure though, don't do it.  Practice first, it's worth it.

This makes me wonder if there will be a whole section of the MGoCommunity bringing cowbells to games. If enough of us did this together and correctly, it would likely be misinterpreted as trying to telegraph instructions to that Russian fishing boat offshore.

Just leave your cowbell in your dorm room.  1 guy with a cowbell was funny, once.  50 dudes with cowbells gets annoying.

the rhythm. I darry a cow bell to every game and just beat the hell out of it when we score. My emotions get to goofy to try and get in sync with the rest of the crowd. JUST BEAT IT

It is seriously sad that you guys can't get it right. Not sure Penn STate can claim the origination of the cowbell chant (I think down south, Mississippi takes the credit), but PSU fans have been doing this flawlessly for 20+ years, at least.

Pathetic...
