Michigan best team without an elite win in last 5 years?
Ran across this article and while I think we get just left out of getting credit for some good wins it does seem to reinforce the bases seeming need for a defining win.... ie. OSU
In the CFN Five-Year Program Analysis, an Elite Win is a victory over an FBS team that finished with two losses or fewer, or on the road or in a bowl game against a team that lost three games. An extra 0.5 is added on to the Elite Win score when a team comes up with a road victory over a team that finished with two losses or fewer.
1. Clemson (10)
2. Alabama (9.5)
T3. Florida State (9)
T3. Ohio State (9)
5. Michigan State (8)
T6. Oklahoma (6.5)
T6. Oregon (6.5)
T6. South Carolina (6.5)
T9. Baylor (6)
T9. Stanford (6)
While disheartening not to have had an "Elite" win the last 5 years, I take consolation in the fact that for the last 2 years were we considered an elite win (if opponent won in Ann Arbor or in a bowl game)
Here's to changing that narrative this year! Go Blue!

What would you consider the best win to be in the past 5 years?

The media now says that James Franklin is a coaching genius. So a win over him should count double.
After watching PSU go up and down the field on offense in the latter part of last season, the fact that we allowed them only 10 points is pretty remarkable.
That defense was historically good.
If our offense could have stayed on the field for just a few more late-game 1st downs, we'd have played for the National Championship.
*sigh*

I was going to do the same thing and you are so right because I still do not think Penn State is all that. Did anyone catch BTN with Stan Jackson saying Penn State is underrated because of their win over osu, but goes on to say Michigan is overrated this year. I would say that is some failed logic or maybe he just blocks out Michigan smoked the same team osu lost too. Even though it is good we are so questioned this year, I just can't wait to get the season started to hear all the chins dropping and eyes open. Hey maybe I am completely wrong but I actually think we are better on both sides of the ball, at least potential wise.

We beat 2 teams at HOME that finished the season with 3 losses, PSU and UW.
You have to beat a 3 loss team on the ROAD to qualify as an elite win.
I guess you have to draw the line somewhere!

Just look at the list.

Sounds like a completely arbitrary way to measure an elite win. We beat Wisconsin and PSU who both finished in the top 10, I fail to see how those aren't elite wins. According to this we weren't an elite win for OSU last year, which is ridiculous in my mind.

TING!
We might as well make up our own arbitrary list:
Last year's elite wins: PSU, Wisc, and OSU (I am counting it as a win because fuck it, it's my list).
Hey, pretty good year.
Or narrative that includes Baylor is laughable unless "Corrupt" is included in the title!

Another Stanford win is against 2015 Iowa. Hard time considering a win against that Iowa team elite.

Well, I guess they did the right thing based on the clearly define metric(s) used.
But I'm not sure how one can look at the outcome of this "study" and not at least question the validity of how everything is measured.

We're to the point where if it's not a playoff team no one gives credit for an elite win.
We SMOKED PSU and people just forgot about it. As you mentioned, UW and Colorado...both go unmentioned.
It's frustrating when the media does it...but it's even MORE frustrating when people on this blog do it (forget about the very strong/elite) wins.

material. As much as we all hate to admit it, though the program has shown considerable improvement, it has not won a chamionship. TO do so, it must win big and important games. That has not happened.
OSU hasn't won a comfernec championship since Harbaugh arrived at Michigan. Clearly, it must win big and important games, and that has not happened.
Of the top five teams listed in CFN's Five-Year Program Analysis, THREE of them (Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan State) have wins over MICHIGAN that are considered ELITE wins. If beating MICHIGAN was considered to be an ELITE win for those teams, then what does that say about those MICHIGAN teams?
MICHIGAN might not be considered by CFN to be an ELITE college football program today, but of the six seasons during this century when MICHIGAN has had double-digit wins, two of those came in the last two seasons. Having one of the youngest and least-experienced FBS teams in 2017 might make it difficult for MICHIGAN to achieve double-digit wins, but if they somehow can get to ten or more wins in 2017, I think that it would be fair to say that MICHIGAN should be considered ELITE again.
at a bowl in florida.
That should be counted as a home game for FSU. Beating a 3 loss team at home does not qualify as an elite win.
BS
The first thing you get taught in statistics class is that statistics can be manipulated in many ways. Anybody can make up their own definition or formula as to what an "elite win" is. JUST WIN, BABY.
