Michigan best team without an elite win in last 5 years?

Ran across this article and while I think we get just left out of getting credit for some good wins it does seem to reinforce the bases seeming need for a defining win.... ie. OSU

In the CFN Five-Year Program Analysis, an Elite Win is a victory over an FBS team that finished with two losses or fewer, or on the road or in a bowl game against a team that lost three games. An extra 0.5 is added on to the Elite Win score when a team comes up with a road victory over a team that finished with two losses or fewer.

1.   Clemson (10)

2.   Alabama (9.5)

T3. Florida State (9)

T3. Ohio State (9)

5.   Michigan State (8)

T6. Oklahoma (6.5)

T6. Oregon (6.5)

T6. South Carolina (6.5)

T9. Baylor (6)

T9. Stanford (6)

While disheartening not to have had an "Elite" win the last 5 years, I take consolation in the fact that for the last 2 years were we considered an elite win (if opponent won in Ann Arbor or in a bowl game)

Here's to changing that narrative this year!  Go Blue!

What games would have been elite wins? OSU x 2? Had we beaten MSU or FSU that would have given them the extra loss, thus not elite. Is that correct? So under harbaugh we're basically saying beat OSU and you have an elite win. Ok,

Looking back, our win over PSU fits that definition I think. The unclear part is that a win over a team with 2 or fewer losses includes their loss to your team or their bowl game. Without their loss to us, PSU was 11-2 and won the big ten. They also lost the other two games on the road by a combined 6 points

I'm not sure they actually qualify based on the team on the field, but the definition of a team with 2 losses could fit for them. It's probably one of our better wins on paper from last year (unfortunately)

I was going to do the same thing and you are so right because I still do not think Penn State is all that. Did anyone catch BTN with Stan Jackson saying Penn State is underrated because of their win over osu, but goes on to say Michigan is overrated this year. I would say that is some failed logic or maybe he just blocks out Michigan smoked the same team osu lost too. Even though it is good we are so questioned this year, I just can't wait to get the season started to hear all the chins dropping and eyes open. Hey maybe I am completely wrong but I actually think we are better on both sides of the ball, at least potential wise.

You are not wrong. I too think they will be better on both sides of the ball. I think this years team has far more starters/ rotation players that have high draft pick athletic abilities. It's all about how fast they click as a team. And from all the interviews I have seen from ciachs and players, it seems like they are gelling really well.

The list is pretty short, which kinda illistrates his point. I mean, Michigan beat 2 teams that finished in the top ten. Yet, they are not considered elite wins by this metric. You basically have to beat a end of year top 5 or 6 team. So, I think saying teams don't have many chances is accurate.

Sounds like a completely arbitrary way to measure an elite win.  We beat Wisconsin and PSU who both finished in the top 10, I fail to see how those aren't elite wins.  According to this we weren't an elite win for OSU last year, which is ridiculous in my mind.

Well, I guess they did the right thing based on the clearly define metric(s) used.

But I'm not sure how one can look at the outcome of this "study" and not at least question the validity of how everything is measured.

Marcus Ray actually brought this up on the M zone earlier this week and until then I actually hadn't thought about it. We beat 3 good teams last year in PSU, UW & Colorado but they all were at home. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but it isn't that defining victory like having a top 5 matchup on the road and walking out of there victorious. We will have a few opportunities this year, so hopefully we can get on this list.

We're to the point where if it's not a playoff team no one gives credit for an elite win.

We SMOKED PSU and people just forgot about it. As you mentioned, UW and Colorado...both go unmentioned.

It's frustrating when the media does it...but it's even MORE frustrating when people on this blog do it (forget about the very strong/elite) wins.

material. As much as we all hate to admit it, though the program has shown considerable improvement, it has not won a chamionship. TO do so, it must win big and important games. That has not happened.

Of the top five teams listed in CFN's Five-Year Program Analysis, THREE of them (Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan State) have wins over MICHIGAN that are considered ELITE wins. If beating MICHIGAN was considered to be an ELITE win for those teams, then what does that say about those MICHIGAN teams?

MICHIGAN might not be considered by CFN to be an ELITE college football program today, but of the six seasons during this century when MICHIGAN has had double-digit wins, two of those came in the last two seasons.  Having one of the youngest and least-experienced FBS teams in 2017 might make it difficult for MICHIGAN to achieve double-digit wins, but if they somehow can get to ten or more wins in 2017, I think that it would be fair to say that MICHIGAN should be considered ELITE again.

The first thing you get taught in statistics class is that statistics can be manipulated in many ways. Anybody can make up their own definition or formula as to what an "elite win" is. JUST WIN, BABY.
