Michigan BBQ and Recruiting thoughts

Submitted by Willhouse on

I thought I might create a thread where we might consolidate our thoughts/opinions/mindless rants about the big weekend coming up in Ann Arbor. This could potentially be a huge recruiting weekend for Michigan.

A couple talking points:

1. Tremendous recently posted on Facebook that he spoke to Leon McQuay III, who stated this morning that "My coach and dad told me that Michigan said if I didn't commit by this weekend, they wouldn't have a scholarship for me".

2. A friend of mine who is in tune with Clemson recruiting told me this morning that Clemson has "basically given up" on RB Derrick Green. Coupling that with Ohio recently ending their recruitment of Green, and the fact that he is spending three days in Ann Arbor with his family along for the ride - maybe there is something going on behind the scenes.

Or maybe not.

But it's worth watching.

Would recommend expanding your horizons to the joys of brisket.

If done right.....yum yum yum.

I started doing them by trimming all the cap, like prepping for a corned beef.

Found that leaving some of it, fat side up, lets it baste itself.  Absolutely delicious if done right, but you have to have a lot of time on your hands, and it is definitely not as forgiving as a pork butt.

but on our road trip to the game @ Nebraska, we're planning on a stop in Kansas City for some BBQ, even though it will add quite a few miles to the trip. I myself haven't been there in over 20 years, so I'm really lookin forward to having my cholesterol #'s taking a major hit that weekend.

That said, i have become more partial toward mustard-based Carolina-style BBQ over the last several years.

Eh, I have mixed feeling about that.  Although I love the blue chip talent that those two guys bring, I feel like we really could use a top-tier WR for Shane over another corner or a RB.  My ideal finish for this class is Treadwell and Green.

Here's the thing though - if we bring in McQuay, it's possible Jourdan Lewis moves to WR, and he's proven to be a pretty solid receiver prospect as well - that could be Shane's deep threat (outside of Darboh and Chesson, of course, who are both deep threats, IMO).

Even if Lewis stayed on the D side, having a great running game opens up deep threats.  If we have great RBs and a great OL, teams will be forced to stack the box against us, or we could just Wisconsin teams all days and not hardly throw.  And with 8 men in the box, anybody can be a deep threat.

Have to disagree re: Lewis. Sam Webb said McQuay is a S recruit, not a DB. Webb also said the opposite of Tremendous, saying that McQuay moved UM out of his top 3 but that doesn't mean they are out, and that UM will still recruit him but only informed him he either needs to move quick, or he will get left out, but they won't stop recruiting him.

Also, has anyone ever ran a 70 yard route? That is just a silly concept that Shane needs someone to get open 70 yards down the field. Also, Treadwell ran an electronic 4.7 (high end too), he is not a burner. Don't know why people think he is.

cant imagine lm3 is still a huge priority with the douglas commit. still think green is a slight longshot but it sounds better than it did a few months ago. what happens this weekend might be fun to talk about on monday but personally i dont see any commits on the horizon.

Two spots left. Three players close to committing. I'd hate to see LT being the one without a chair once the music stops.

Anyway we take all three? ( LT, Green and McQuay)

Unfortunately Tremendous' street cred is to be called into question as multiple recruits have mentioned that he has spun their words before.

I believe it is directionally accurate, however.  With Douglas it doesn't make much sense to stay after LM3 unless he wants to commit right away.

Not so fast my friend. Sam Webb essentially posted the opposite of Tremendous just yesterday, saying that McQuay is still being recruited actively, and that he was only informed that there are two spots remaining, so it is his move to make. BTW, McQuay is being recruited as a S, not a DB.

I think they (the pay sites) criticicized TomVH when he was here for how he dealt with recruits.  They need to undermine the attempts of these free sites providing content in order to maintain their power and business model.  Unless you see quotes or tweets from recruits (which I remember one recruit tweeting that Tremendous skewed his words and Steve corrected the error and apologized) don't buy it when the paysites just give a wholesale dismissal of their work.

Yeah, like I said, I remember it happening once, back when they would do bullets and paraphrase recruits rather than just quoting what they actually said.  I think LT was the one I remembered.  I haven't seen it since they've been doing quotes over there, so I haven't really seen it as a pattern as much as a one time thing.  I think they provide enough good content and I think they're getting better at reporting more honestly and transparently.

Funny because I've never interviewed Laquon Treadwell. I've talked to him on short occasions a couple of times, but never have posted an interview or update with him at all. I'd love to see a link to whatever you've talked about.

Please, keep criticizing the way we do things to justify your spending money on (likely multiple) paysites. If you can find more incidences where recruits have said themselves that we misquoted them, I'd love to read them.

The one quote I screwed up on was Armani Reeves last year, where I took the exact wording of his text to me out of context. I talked with him immediately after, the quote was changed, and there were no hard feelings.

I posted exactly what McQuay texted me this morning. Verbatim. If it's not what it was meant to be, then he is the one who misspoke, not myself.

There was one in the last year that immediately said the opposite of what Tremendous had relayed from him. He did it as a response. Tremendous corrected it. There was some question here, around that time, of Tremendous bullet pointing recruits' feelings and statements, rather than giving direct quotes. I'd say it was near the end of last recruiting cycle? I wish I remembered the name.

Multiple?

Who were the multiple?  I'm only aware of one and they cleared it up.

Your comment suggests this is a common occurence.  In my experience Tremendous has done a Tremendous job keeping us informed.

Although Trmendous uses direct quotes from the kids, kids tend to misinterpret things a lot. Take for instance when Tremendous suggested that they may be recruiting another OL because the kid and David Dawson said so. Well Chris Fox was pretty pissed to hear that, and considered taking visits because he committed under the premise that Michigan was only taking 5 OL.

Tremendous has a lot of cool features, and I love the interviews that they do, but guys like Webb, who actually has a pretty good relationship with Mattison, or Balas, who has his own contacts are actually still pretty valuable if you enjoy following this sort of thing.

Like this LM3 issue: Tremendous gets a quote from the kid feeling that if he doesn't commit this weekend that he WON'T have a scholarship, where Sam talked to the kids dad, which stated that if Leon wasn't ready this weekend that they couldn't GUARANTEE that he would have an available spot when he was ready, but that they would still recruit him.

Big difference.

I'm not sure if you can hold Tremendous responsible for accurately reporting a quote if the speaker was just wrong about something. He doesn't report things as ontological, objective, empirically established truth. He's pretty clear about saying "Recruit X told me Z," not "Z is irrefutably true."

Besides, Tremendous is covering games from the press box this season. SOMEONE in the Athletic Department thinks he's doing a pretty good job.

To my knowledge, there was only one issue, it was a matter of context rather than content, and it was promptly and publicly addressed. Also, it didn't involve Treadwell at all.

Besides, if we're going to start discounting anyone who has ever been accused of misquoting/mis-sourcing/misleading/giving an inaccurate impression, then we'd better start ignoring Sam Webb, Mike Farrell, TomVH, Ace, Brian, me, my wife, and my dogs.
