Michigan Bball vs. Wayne St. Live Blog

Can someone please keep me informed as to what is happening in the new and improved Crisler this evening. Anxious to see Trey Burke take over at point. Can't wait to watch this team play. Stu and Zack, this one's for you. I'll miss those 2. Does Timmy Jr. take over games this year? and so on and so on. Go Blue.

Michigan did as I expected. Good scrimmage. Played different rotations. Don't get hurt and concentrate on the passing game to keep everyone moving so the freshman (Burke) can get use to the system. Burke is very ready to play in the Big Ten. Very good awareness. Same old song, big men don't rebound very well. They don't get very good position. Outside shooting was off but without intensity of a meaningful game this is hard to judge. Big men also need to concentrate on catching the ball. Opportunities under the basket went awry because they fumbled around with the ball. But, I didn't expect much more except I thought basic skills would have improved with the big guys and I don't believe they have. Wait a few more games. Maui will be tough if they don't get better real quick. Just sayin.

Looked like the begining of last season, team had trouble scoring and getting into a flow on the offensive end.  That said, looked like Beilein wanted to make sure the team won but did nothing to find a line-up that would make a run.  Looked like he was testing different pairings.  Burke looked pretty good, has a nice smoothness to his offensive game.  He definetly will need to work on his defense.  Michigan was really trying to work the 1-3-1.  Nobody was hitting the three tonight until Hardway hit a couple in the second half.  Interesting to see what Beilein does with Morgan & Horford.  Morgan looked better but Horford had significantly more minutes. Smotz had an off night, really thought he would be a little more pro-active with his offensive game.  Even Vogrich couldn't hit a couple wide open threes.  Oh well, one more week to get ready for the opener. Brundige did not see many minutes (unless you were looking for his older brother who plays for Wayne State).

5-24 from 3

4-12 from foul line

14 turnovers

Belien thinks team was too hyped with big crowd on hand for exhibition

Belien, Not pleased with performance (obviously), rhythm issues "what's a good shot, what's a bad shot"

Burke will be a 1st Team Big Ten player by the time he leaves A2 (apprx. 7 & 6 assists), Brundidge will be a contributor sooner rather than later. Hardaway Jr. had a poor shooting first half but heated up in the second ( approx 20 & 8 rebs ).  Novak had the best game of anyone tonight (approx. 14 & 7reb), with several hustle plays and charges taken. When the team starts hitting their open shots and free throws, look out...Michigan will be danerous in the Big Ten! Go Blue

ps. The front court still needs work, Evan has to step up.

New tunnel in the corner.  Leads to practice center I imagine?

New seats with block M are schnazzy.  Cup holders are nice, will probably cut down on sticky floor syndrome.

Sound system needs serious help.  Cannot understand anything announcer is saying.  Quiet and warbled.

Scoreboard is seriously sweet.  Every inch of that baby is flat panel display.

Everyone ice cold to start...well, Zack Novak hit some threes throughout.

Zack went down in a pile and tweaked his ankle, but he never came out of the game.  My sister asked him about it in the autograph line, he said it was fine.

I should add that he went out of his way to talk to my niece who adores him.  Really nice group of guys.

Trey Burke obviously further along than Darius was when Darius was a freshman.  Made some highlight reel passes(and some freshman ones as well).  Saw a lot of 4 guards+Horford or Morgan(Novak at the 4 spot).

No frisbee dogs at halftime*shakes fist at sky*

Wayne State appears to have a nice post player.  And a seriously hideous color scheme.

Hardaway warmed up in the second half.  Burke and he hooked up for at least one sweet alley oop.

Wayne State beat us to a lot of 50/50 balls.

Overall...not pretty, but there were stretches where they looked like they were putting it together.

I didn't really expect us to be that great for this game.  Shooting 3s in practice is a lot different than shooting 3s in a game, and it's tough for the big men to get up and get ferocious in the paint for an exhibition (but I really hope they do eventually because that was lacking from Morgan last season).

A couple observations on being at the new Crisler that weren't noted above:

1.  New seats are nice.  Sort of a synthetic material that provides more airy cushion.

2. Cupholders are nice addition.

3. The moved the press to the corner on the upper level.  This provides more space for fans near the court.  I like this move.

4.  There are four or five new "suites" in between the upper and lower levels.  These are interesting, essentially "open air" suites with four or five big seats, a big desk and some space.  For some reason it seems strange to have suites where you are visible to everyone else, but it doesn't matter because I don't think I'll be finding myself in one.

5. The most visible change, to me at least, were the advertisements on the new video boards.  At random times they would show Arby's or other ads.  I don't know if everyone noticed it, but once I did, it became infuriating.  I almost prefer the old boards that showed players' points during the whole game in uninterrupted fashion instead of being distracted by the Arby's logo in the middle of a fast break.  I sincerely hope this isn't what's in store for the Big House.

I missed the stats too.  I guess Brandon just figures everyone has the box score up on their iphones.  Long term, he may not be wrong.  Then again, I can never get decent cell service in Crisler.  Any idea when wifi is coming?  The only way I can justify the ads is by the big beautiful flashing box they're being displayed on.  Torn.
