landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
Michigan Basketball vs. MSU Open Thread
Are there any recruits attending? I'd imagine Michigan would have some in-state kids stopping by. Let's hope the defense picks up and we come out fast for once.
but I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny.
Confirmed. Plus, our all-everything recruiter Shane Morris will also be in attendance. Can't hurt
I think we will see more visitors next week when we play Indiana. It seems like the coaches have picked that week to have lots of kids on campus.
247sports confirmed that Jalen Embry and Tim Cason II will be on campus next week.
but okay... GO BLUE!
And might need a second half thread as well.
Pardon my french, but I can't stand the smug-ass, woe-is-us bullshit on the board this morning...so here are my assorted thoughts about 40 minutes prior to tip-off:
PSU was just a bad dream
We're undefeated at home
MSU is going to look dumb when they all start smacking the floor like a horde of the Heartless in Kingdom Hearts.
Blues Brothers Dance
Maybe Hoke will sit next to Beilein again
I still love this team
The maple leaf will fly at some point today
Don't lose your dinosaur
Prestige Worldwide, that's what you gotta do
No, I'm not an ostritch
unlike when we played Staee in EL, Jordan Morgan is healthy. Could be a difference-maker.
Any online suggestions for a live feed, for an idiot who accidentally booked a flight which leaves in 10min, and doesn't land until after the game? Thank god for go go in-flight....
You probably won't be able to strream it because gogo sucks, but try this
I guess it helps when the gogo, is actually working....f-ing Delta.
Maybe you saw this, posted about 10 minutes after you posted:
If the powers that be want to set up a liveblog for the game, I can help run it.
Are you stocked up on booze or do you need to run to the store? You have 33 minutes.
Saturday stash turns into Sunday afternoon drinking.
Didn't even do a preview for the game, I wasn't holding my breath for a live blog.
Pride is on the line. B1G championship probably outta reach, but splitting with State will help heal some wounds and restore some confidence.
HINT TO BIGS: Don't react to Nix's first shoulder twitch post move. Or the second, third, or fourth twitch. He only makes an offensive move after 4 shoulder twitches.
My parting shot: Badgers lost to Purdue.
Long time reader. Just made an acct because I'm in Istanbul and am trying to find a place to watch the game. Any help is appreciated.
I was banking on the espn app but of course it's a CBS game and first row doesn't work either.
Pussyfiend? Really? That's what popped into your head just now?
How awesomely horrible.
I thought the CBS Sports App would be the answer, but I'm not seeing streams on there today.
This person really likes cats.
He should fit right in.
Got my Chicks Dig Scars MGoShirt on, got some Great Lakes Burning River (cuz they don't make 'Burning Couch in East Lansing'), blasting Mozart's Requiem in D minor on Sparty's behalf... Yeah I'm ready for game time.
Where's the front page preview? I hope its absence isn't because Brian and the powers that be have thrown in the towel. Do I have to post the John Belushi/Animal House Pearl Harbor clip?
Something that many are missing IMO - We do not want to play on Thursday of the BTT. Gotta stay in top 4. The season revival starts today.
is small. Didn't even fill the bleachers, there's a lot of older guys here that aren't students but bought the tickets. MSU parents then take up another chunk. Nothing in 130. And we're broken up a little bit, so I wouldn't expect anything like the OSU atmosphere, although I'm hoping for the best
Thanks for the insight Drake. Do you think you'll get the #1 jersey your sophomore or junior year?
Already mine bro
I live in Atlanta and have April 5-8 off!!
Coincidence? I think not!!
Kinda off topic, but did Denard win the cover vote for NCAA Football 14?
Voting ends March 8th, but I think Denard's up by 10k+ votes.
Mike Kitts, Lamont Simpson, and TV Teddy Valentine on the whistles today. Buckle up
Yes. Follow up question: Will I be getting drunk if Michigan beats Sparty?
Stuck driving home for the next 5 hours and out of range. Iheartradio app has WTKA only playing ads. Any suggestions ok how to listen?
The MSU broadcasters suck, but you can download the Spartan Sports Network app and listen from there
Replied to the wrong post... Please ignore or remove.
Team Rankings posted its projected box scores and, for the board's information, they have estimated the following shooting percentages despite predicting a Michigan win:
Field Goal %
2 Point Shooting %
3 Point Shooting %
Free Throw %
What they do is run simulated games and seasons and take an average of the results. Our home average effective FG% is 51.04%, better than MSU's away effective FG% by about 2%. Hopefully, it's closer to something like this.
Have no idea why, but ref Teddy Valentine was literally crying down on court before game here in Ann Arbor. Strange sight.
3/3/13 3:53 PM
That is very, very odd..?! Interesting.
Tom Izzo told him he didn't feel the same way and couldn't they just be friends?
I'm not feeling good about this game. That said, who knows what will happen in this game coming up. In all honesty, what I don't want is a nailbiter that we end up losing; not that that wouldn't be a good thing, especially if defense seemed improved and certain young players showed up, but the emotional toll that type of game will put on me on this hangover-ridden Sunday will not bode well. (I know...way to make it all about me)
Rolling with the satellite radio on the way home from a golf tournament. Good thing the satellite radio decided to do the Michigan IMG radio instead of the sparty radio!!! Go Blue!
....belongs in a different decade.
If Hardaway and/or Stauskas get going, watch out.
Hardaway with 15+
The key to victory!
Where ann arbor is. Or EL.
Figures that this game, of all games, had to be during spring break.
Raftery makes me happy.
Hopefully Appling continues to play not to his best and Burke really gets the better of him today.
Let's go BLUE.... Beat Staee
Oh, sweet move!
I've been told 3 pt D is random
Kids are on break right now, but I agree with you in general.
Even though Stauskas didn't get a foul called or anything it's encouraging to see us attack the rim early. Good.
THJ just cuts right through State's D for a dunk. Awesome.
Can we get some foul calls at home?
Jesus, Burke, that was disgusting.
(In a good way).
one of Burke's best starts ever. Looks wicked and like he will accept anything less than a victory. Will be interesting how long he will be able to sustain this energy/focus and how MSU will try to adjust.
Defensive intensity all right, though not great. Like that they are taking the ball to the rack.
Vicious elbow delivered to Stauskas.
That looks like a broken nose if I've ever seen one, yikes get back soon Nik.
I'm liking the Chiddy Bang music during the TO. Great rap duo.
couple mental mistakes already. Need to get him in the game offensively
Still kinda fuming over GRIII's missed shot on the breakaway. Not what happened on the offensive end, but how long it took for him to get back on d, which honestly never really happened. That kid needs to wake the fuck up.
Am I the only one who is getting a blurry, dark TV feed?
Mine is good on Comcast in Illinois...
Needs to attack Payne.
Exactly what I was thinking. Robinson should have the advantage ok the offensive end.
On both his 3's before he shot
Still missing assignments on D but at least the team is playing tough today.
hope stauskas isnt hurt badly, haven't heard anything yet?
get some fouls, some high-% twos, and get them to sag in.
are opposing teams 100% from 3's at the top of the key against us this season? :P
Dang pup finish it
That's not so much teams just getting incredibly lucky/hot against us from 3, but more of a consequence of how wide open our defense tends to leave guys behind the arc.
Edit: that was meant for kehnonymous' comment
Good start boys. Good start. Payne, with that outside shot, is a Pain to defend...
LETS GO BLUE!
Stauskas and GRIII need to get a little more intensity on the defensive end.
Has Gonzaga ever even made it past the sweet sixteen?
I am pretty sure they made it to the Elite Eight once in the late 1990s. I can't think of any other occasion offhand.
Yes, Elite 8 on their first tourney run back in the day
I don't know the stats but I feel like we're awful at the line as a team.
Is Bacari Alexander our big man coach?
needs to improve his FT shooting, to go along with his ability to take it to the rack
How bad is stauskas' injury? Looked pretty bad watching live - did it not seem like a technical on TV?
Totally inadvertent elbow from Dawson trying to get a rebound, it didnt look pretty for Nik though.
Kills me when we get no points off of opportunities like that.
Yeah they can actually sohot threes
Is 3 point defense random, or are we just really bad at it?
Find the shooters in transition.
Our 3 point shooting has gone in the tank.
Strong 4 mins
And like magic we score off of the fastbreak!
This is the most physical I have seen Michigan play all year on D.
Yep. They need to continue with it for the next 29 minutes, too. Where it's been I'm not sure but when playing like this it makes them a different team (in a good way).
That can't happen
Guh. Really working ourselves out of having Mo.
What is Mitch doing??
I just asked myself the same question he has cost us 4 points alone
Shut Payne down.
gotta grab the damn ball mcgary!!
Does this team even practice boxing out? Also, quit trapping the ball screen!
hey nice thought
Agreed, doesn't really generate turnovers for us and leads to an open 3 for the opponent most times.
They're not really trapping the ball screen. McGary did a good job once and they just switched. He was able to push the guard out deep enough that they easily switched back.
Do we coach the box out? I'm serious because we are terrible at it.
Bill Raftery drunk and senile.
Dish by McGary to Payne for the jam
when we have 2 bigs in the game, I think we should start Mitch over Nik going forward.
bring nik off the bench for offense, he's just not doing much lately.
Ball keeps bouncing Sparty's way for easy buckets and Payne being a pain ain't helping.
Thus far on D in terms of intensity and playing good position. 5 open looks from 3 for Staee but other than, much better
We are a mediocre FT shooting team and it may cost us eventually.
50% free throw shooting not good enough for you!?
Do we ever make 2-2 free throws??
early surprising stat (that are also worrisome):
Losing Reb battle 5 - 11
Damnit, get off the court Izzo!
Better than that pls
Nobody in the lane ... NOBODY
but, c'mon, how about a little regression to the mean by our opponents on 3P FG%?
Together = 3 on 5 offense.
But we are much better on defense with them in the game
state relying on the 3? surprising offense thus far
Hour ford has no idea what he's doing
I hate that MSU's bigs can go over the back and push all over without getting fouls called.
Get Horford out of there. What was that??!!! Was he even looking to rebound???
That was an interesting approach to the box out by horford
Refs making their presence felt already
WHAT IS HE DOING THERE? Box out and watch the hoop a little
michigan cant seem to get a call
what else is new tho
Surprising for me is 16 points in paint for us to 2 not. If we maintain a semblance of an inside presence and our jumpshot kicks in, nice.
Pts in paint. Not from our posts
Albrecht feels spazzy to me.
Robinson making plays!!!
diggin' on Spike, good stuff
I don't understand why our defense calls for sending our bigs out past the 3 point line so freaking much. Makes no sense to me.
I'm trying to make sense of it too and the only thing I can think of is that we're trying to get bigger/taller men in front of their players shooting for a 3, hoping some actually don't go in hah.
Can't figure this one out either. It's frustrating and has left so many opposing teams with wide open shots
There's basically four ways (in my opinion) to defend the ball screen.
1. Go underneath it. Never done at a high level because a PG can just pull up for an easy three.
2. Hard trap it. If a team knows it is coming, a good point guard can easily make you pay by splitting it, passing out of it early, etc etc. Many ways to beat it.
3. Hedge and recover. Most teams, including us, will hedge and recover. The hedge forces the ball handler far enough out that the big man can recover to his man.
4. Switch. Rarely a good idea with exceptional guards going against big men.
I like Spike a lot. When he's a senior, I think he will be amazing.
Yet, I want him running the offense usually - not shooting without passing twice in a row.
Man is Payne good. Probably a B10 1st teamer. I'd like to see us attack him a bit on offense.
Agree - hope he goes pro next year.
Probably the most improved player I've seen in the B1G this year, living up to the pedigree he came to EL with. We've got to keep him off the 3pt line.
why can't we get defensive rebounds.
Is not NBA yet.
No Trey = No offense
this game will not end well unless that changes. Box out and hustle need to increase a lot, and soon.
This week on "Stats that will regress to the mean": MSU 50% from 3, UM 0%.
Stauskas back to a standing ovation!
I have to remember how young they are. There is a lot of talent on this team, but not enough hustle. Makes me miss Novak
Good energy but poooooor defensive blocking out. Payne will cool off but let's hope Harris doesn't replace that scoring.
Trey needs to take better shots on 3's, Horford needs to start improving at some point, maybe put Max in instead sometimes
We can't afford three or four minutes of spike today.
you'd think guys would try and distinguish themselves by hustling more
Where the hell was the foul on that alley-oop?
Holy shit I wish they'd miss a 3.
Just me or did McGary get wiped out on that oop attempt?
Mitch must have stones for hands
What a line up out there right now. Wow.
Gawd our D is awful..
MSU shooting 56% from the 3 while outrebounding us 2:1 won't end well, so hope that changes soon.
got to reel them back in and get some momentum back. This team is too young to be down 10 at the half. Let's get er going
don't let them get a bigger lead, dangerous territory
So this is the moment where Michigan lays down and never quite catches up.
With an Akunne
Vogrich is as doughy as he was the day he entered the program.
it must really suck to be as pessimistic as you
Then p!lease, please stop wathing and commenting!
get Matt the fuck oput of there please, just stupid
Elbow extended? Must be a foul on the defender!
Calm down. It's a 3 point game.
Too much dribbling and standing around. Run a set, please.
They missed a 3! Turning point!
Can we hit a freaking wide open 3 please? Jesus!
That's why we need Stauskas. LeVert isn't making his 3's.
That's why we need Stauskas. LeVert isn't making his 3's.
Stauskas hasn't made many lately either.
Absolutely. Because Nik has been automatic from behind the arc lately to go along with his great defensive play...
can we PLEASE hit a damn 3??
If this game was on the road.
To hit wide open looks. Pro tip.
Every rebound just bounces off of our hands.
Vogrich better get real comfortable on that bench.
He is only hurting us
They are trying to make this an alley-oop contest. THis is causing breaks the other way and MSU is shooting lights out. THey need to cut some of the extra and just play ball.
They had one bad alley-oop.
They've made more of them than 3's today. Until the threes start falling, I'm fine with alley oop any chance they get.
Blah blah blah blah blah - justske a fucking shot
Things would't be simple. We never start that well, and man, we are staying with them, despite it. If the 2nd half adjustment is a true thing, I like where we're at. We've got the energy. Just get the shots to start falling.
0 of 6 from 3. Yikes.
1 Albrecht, 1 Vogrich, 2 LeVert, though. Burke and Hardaway have only missed one each. Just need quality shots from our starters.
Elbow to face
Caught an elbow above the eye...got stitches....questionable return
Dawson dropped The People's Elbow on Stauskas' forehead.
I would leave Levert wide open too....he made his 2 three's last Sunday and don't think he made crap at Penn St....
Do we practice on our own rims? JHC, it would be nice to have EVERYONE show up and play well in a big game. Seems like at least one guy always has an off
or we aren't goin to win. Simple as that.
Mitch = Jackie Moon
GR3 = Coffee Black
Stauskus = Monix
Spike = Twiggy
He doesn't have any help right now. If staukas is out for this game that will hurt badly. Hardaway needs to step up and he is playing like crap. We are looking like a one trick pony.
Sweet offensive set.
Seems like Stauskas is spending some time on the pine for his apathetic perimeter defense.
or a possible concussion...
That too. Hopefully he can still see his shots go down
we don't get the call when we drive to the basket?
They seem so calm and we look like hyperactive children.
If you'd have told me our season average from 3 was 7.6% I'd have believed you.
Here's to hoping for a delicious regression to the mean.
Again, 3 of our guys under the basket, opponent (one player) just jumps into/over them all for the rebound. Ugh.
Was an ugly sequence.
How was that not a travel?!?!?
No good bounces or Hardaway is not smart with the ball.
Tim Hardaway ALWAYS seems to dribble into trouble. He is probably the most mediocre "star" in the country.
give 'em HELL Beilein.
Agreed....was great to see he spittin' some fire! Hopefully we get a few calls in the 2nd half. Hail!
Missing layups, and turning over the ball with sloppy handling in transition. Just not playing up to our potential on the offensive end right now.
Recipe for disaster with our defense being pretty shaky.
The defense hasn't been all that bad, the problem today has been on the offensive end, part of that attributed to the loss of Stauskas early on.
However, the defensive improvement could also be attributed (at least in part) to the loss of Stauskas.
I really think Burke is all we have and it's disappointing.
That doesn't bode well for next season.
but we cannot let them double us up. Even two rebounds go the other way, and we are tied now. No sense in playing 10 people if everyone isn't going balls-out while they are on the floor.
From the sounds of it, I'm very glad I chose to do school work and be productive than to watch this game.
Actually we end the half only down 3.
We're doing better than last game...
I wish other players were as good at creating shots as Burke. Our offense stalls so hard without him in there, then he comes in and throws up some (at first look) crazy shots but they go in.
We need a post up coach. A pf or c should be able to slam it home anywhere close to the rim. Our lack of touch to finish strong is maddening.
Doesn't run w a true low post look. Contrast Sparty and UM.
Ok I get that but at least he could coach them to finish strong.
Where is our home cooking?! Nix and Payne are climbing backs all day
We officially stink
You stink as a fan. We got this.
more by refs than any other B1G team it seems like
Plus, we need 2 Bigs on the floor
We give up too many offensive rebounds, we can't make open threes, we can't get any calls, and Timmy just can't get going. This is not a winning formula.
MSU getting all the calls and the luck. Every tipped ball seems to go right to them. At least 5 points they got from purely luck.
Anyone know where he is please return him to Ann Arbor
he's still in madison. But this is his third year in a row disappearing down the stretch.
At least he'll be back for his senior year.
have never seen a home team not get any calls and have weak fouls called against them.
I have, about every Michigan game at home for the past month and half.
What?? We closed out a half nicely? THAT'S how you do it. Well done Michigan.
To watch Burke dribble around for a fadeaway 3.
That almost went. Christ.
Really key to cut that down to 3 from 7 let's go.
And we're only down by 3.
If that shot would've gone in I probably would've thrown my coffee table off my balcony. Not really, but close.
I would have burned my couch.
in the street.
and others would have come to either riot or celebrate.
Some of you people are bipolar...
Which one of me are you talking to?
will allow us to fix what needs fixed at the half without thinking about being down 10 or more, which could easily have been the case.
Nice transition basket to go into halftime. Have to get points from somewhere else in the second half. Burke can't do it all. Hope Stauskas is okay to play.
i thought a majority of fans wanted staukas out of the lineup?
Defensively, he hurts us, yes. I'm hoping for a 3-pointer spark of some kind though. Even if he's just coming off the bench.
I thought Lavert was fouled while shooting.
Good finish to the half.
We hit a couple threes and we have a lead. Not terrible. Anybody's ball game.
Need to hit some damn 3's, but we're right in this game. Not a bad first half.
The fact we are only down by 3 and went 0-7 from 3 and we played terrible that first half is a miracle. That was absolutely a bad half!
interesting 1st half.
I'm a little annoyed by too much whining here. I think UM has looked pretty good (better than most of us expected, yes?).
We are down three, while MSU is shooting 5-11 from 3 point, and we are 0-6.
If you were only reading this thread you would think that we are down by at least 15.
Do any of you remember us getting destroyed down low on the first game. We're playing pretty well. Stay positive; we got this.
If it wasn't for Payne, we'd be running a slam dunk contest on MSU. Gotta love the points in the paint today.
I thought Levert played well in his extended minutes.
He's really come on lately. I actually prefer him out there now. At least he attempts to play defense.
we don't get home refs. nix and payne are back climbers. we drive and get contact but no call. nix travels badly and nothing.
yet, we're shooting 0% from 3 and are down 3. half-time adjustment + regression to the mean = don't give up hope yet.
they just seem lazy and out of it not running any offense.
too much walking around and letting burke do something.
(looking at you glenn)
And they're actually making some strong, hard cuts off screens and to the basket.
i guess im just not seeing these strong, hard cuts you speak of
Physicality needs to be a point of emphasis moving forward if we are to take the next step. I want a couple more bruisers infused into this team. We have a lot of non-contributors on our bench that I wouldn't neccessarily want to take to a fistfight. Good kids I'm sure but the lack of physicality comes out against teams like MSU and OSU and Indiana...heck even Wisconsin. It's not a coincidence that we lose to those teams. It can't be all about jump shots and alley-oops. I see McGary as the only physical force we have. Thats a problem.
I totally agree with this msg.
3 ball seems to be the difference. Need averages to even out. Not at their best, but only down 3 at the half. Can easily turn this around in the final 20.
The question is...do we love Stauskas now that we can't hit a 3, and he is gone? Or do we still hate him?
