Michigan basketball vs. Eastern Open Thread
Hmm.. Attempting to watch on thefirstrow.eu. Not brodcasting yet.
edit: AHH THE GAME STARTED? I'M FREAKING OUT!
anyone with a working link? The one on FirstRowSports.eu is just black.
Man I'm pumped for this in-state rivalry. lol
Green-and-white-clad teams have their place in the world too!
Good, I need something to distract me from so many people being just flat out wrong in the other thread. Should be a nice cool down for the night. What is everyone drinking? I've got a Tom Collins and a plate of holiday cookies I stole from the cooling rack. Go Blue!
I'm enjoying Big Sky Powder Hound Winter Ale and Snake River Lager.
This BTN production value is terrible.
"We got any stock shots of Michigan? Brown Jug? Brown Jug works."
Michigan - 79
Eastern - 49
Go Blue...Cover the 25! For entertainment purposes only.
firstrowsports usually starts late, we'll probably miss the first 5 minutes or so :(
They've been right on time this season so far, at leas with UM basketball.
Huh, its been late for me for most games
That's not really true in my experience. I've never owned a television and watch all my games on firstrow... Hope you're right, though!
setting the tone for dominancy.
side note-- when i saw the highlighter colored shoes on the court, i was extremely worried we were the ones wearing them. crisis averted.
Michigan fan, EMU student.... Go Blurons!!!!11!!
Aren't these jersey colors too similar?
also as long as we're not wearing them, i love the neon shoes.
Way too similar.
are too similar. this game is going to be unpleasant to watch.
Arkansas sucks from three. Shot well against us
West Virginia sucks from three. Shot well against us
Eastern sucks from three. Started 2/3 against us
You don't think its possible that at some point our defense might be just a little bit suspect?
all other online streams for UM are still not working, either.
Remember in the preseason when we had someone streaming the BTN games? Great quality! Wish he would return.... who was that mysterious man?
Was hoping for that too. No go on vipbox or firstrow streams for me!
with a mind bottling airball and turnover so far. leggo young gun!
its boggling :)unless you are kidding then well played.
Good to hear the regular PA guy is back.
His name is Bobb Vergiels. You may recognize him from Comerica Park as he is the PA guy for the Detroit Tigers, too.
his finishing at the basket is intergalactic. i'm glad michigan could compete against msu's recruitment of burke from outerspace
Not high quality, but all I could find
Thank you, my friend!
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
Holy neon shoes and socks, Batman!
(On EMU, not us, for those not watching.)
and double someone else. I imagine it will work out for us
Remember when EMU hit those two 3s and had the lead?
It's like watching a fat nerd trying to pick up chicks--they can't score.
is that "music" that was blaring during the break? And those shoes are hurting my eyes.
Actually, I'm just grumpy because I was supposed to be at the game tonight but couldn't make it. Boooo. GO BLUE!
How is it not a foul when a guy falls on top of you?
It's a-raining men!
Trey with the trey! We're rolling
Was that a 5 on 0?
Was that a 4 on 0 fast break there?
And it was epic.
Pretty sure all 5 of our guys just beat them down the court.
and this team's willingness to pass the ball!
Ya, that person is what we like to call dumb.
Come on pep band woodwinds, find the pitch center!
This is starting to look like Student Rec Center run.
I hope you have the chance to fulfill your dream, but if you are going to go UM you should do it for practical reasons, not for reasons of vanity.
I thought they said earlier Bielfeldt wasn't playing?
firstrow stream now working.
I love Stauskas but he tries to be too cute sometimes
The Fab Five are baaaccccckkkkkk!!!
I think we're in scrimmage mode, guys.
Is Bartlestein dressed tonight? I'd love to see him get some minutes at the end of this one...
No more behind the back passes for you, Nik.
Jeebus! Has he fallen on the depth chart. I remember when Illinois wanted him bad and I thought it was such a coup when we got him. He was the sporting news shooter of the year and like one of the best players in the state of Illinois. Apparently he went the way of Gavin Gronginger.
He's just been awful since last year after really turning it on in his sophomore year
getting blocked by emu players?
Dashonte Riley; former Syracuse big from class of 09 - was a 4* prospect. Already has 3 blocks. He's not EMU's typical talent.
Eastern actually has a couple very good shot blockers. They block something like 17% of thier opponents shots.
It is fun to watch
One thing I have seen is Hardaway has picked up his defensive intensity compared to last year. Either maturity or the freshmen have sparked him. Last year he played some lazy defense.
Holy shit Morgan, go up STRONG
Jordan is getting manhandled
Where's the hustle, Morgan?
/s not like I can hit a layup
It's gotten to the point where I just laugh whenever Nik hits a three.
Is Morgan growing a 1970s mustache/sideburns combo? I heartily approve if this is the case.
This EMU dude must be a great host, because he's throwing some awesome BLOCK parties....
And so it continues...a player goes way above their ppg avg. Dude cones in averaging 3 ppg and already has 9
40-24 at the half
What a wonderfully spirited showing by the students there. They look like they were promised a basketball game and Eastern Michigan showed up instead.
What happened with the students? I can't fully decode if they did something good or bad?
The band played The Victors at the end of the half, as is customary, and the routine of clapping and fist pumping, etc. was hilariously uninspiring. They all looked like they were being punished. At least the ones that were on TV.
Holy crap, I just saw Napoleon Dynamite in the student section
You're drunk. That was carrot top.
Hahaha that's my buddy. Too funny.
They just called Tim "Jeff Hardaway" on BTN. Epic fail. That's a player they should know by his Junior year.
I saw this and had flashbacks to my grade school BB coach making us do suicides for hours when we didn't run the floor and play defense. I think I was 12.
Recent events make me feel like I should clarify; "suicides" were what we called the baseline to baseline sprint drills.
Please tell me there were two Eastern defenders at the rim? Poor EMU.
That's like a reverse negative of that awful 2007 football photo, where the OL didn't block anyone.
When you don't know how you're going to end your sentences before you start them, you end up saying things like "Missouri-Illinois is the best non-conference rivalry in the nation."
Hey man, Kentucky-Louisville is nowhere NEAR as exciting as Illinois-Mizzou...RIGHT BTN?!
Would someone please explain to me who Jeff Hardaway is?
Jeff Foxworthy + Michael Hardaway = Jeff Hardaway
I guess I was a bit late on that - so here's my sign?
Did they send it back to China?
This is my first time back at Crisler in years and holy hell.... I can't believe this is the same arena. I've seen the pictures and all, but it just doesn't do justice to the magnitude of the improvement.
I know how you feel - after spending four years going to games there it's hard to believe it's the same place.
Nik Stauskas: 3-4 FG at halftime, 9pts ----> 2.25pts per shot.
Throw it down, Big Man!
Back to back great plays!
Dang. Was hoping for a broken backboard.
Over/ under on shots tonight?
You would make that long 3, wouldn't you!
Bryant..1 three pointer on the season...has 3 tonight go figure!
And I don't think the "well, maybe or d is suspect" people can argue that teams just hit shots on us sometimes when things like that go in.
Love McGary's hustle. No matter what he is always running up and down the floor.
Tracy Morgan sighting on a commercial!!!!!
- I'm glad to see Mitch and Jordan going up stronger to the basket this half
- True EMU's uni's are truly an eye sore
- I love that Trey plays for us
- Nik is having a nice rebound game
- And as for the Poinsettia Bowl, 2 years ago I was very interested cause Hoke was coaching that game
Not sure if this has been said already, but those shoes are tough on the eyes!
Alley-oops continue to be a work in progress. A very slow process
It's all McGary tonight!!!
Mitch is playing EXCELLENT!!! This is the player we have been looking for!
He is really developing in to the solid player everyone knows he can be. Can't wait to see him at tourney time!!
McGary already looks leaner and in better shape from the beginning of the season. Lovin what I see tonight from the big man
is getting is hustle on!!!
These refs are giving us no love.
Mitch has activated beast mode
Every game McGary plays in, it looks like he's playing faster and faster. Good to see with conference play coming up.
There have been some heinous no-calls in this game when we have gone to the bucket.
It's too bad we'll only see this particular squad for this one year, what a fun bunch to watch
Courtside lady's voice... yikes.
good lord. when this team is clicking on all cylinders, they're as good as anyone in the country.
We're ranked #2....so yeah
Anyone know if GR2 has been going to games?
I love the way the team is always looking for the extra pass
Yeah. Let's complain about the officiating while up 25. Classy.
Like mcgary finally is moving with a purpose I love his hustle but he has looked lost at times. Tonight he looks like he understands his role.
I think he is a tough and heady player, good rebounder and will improve his defense and play key minutes throughout his career.
Mike Hart sighting!!! And the announcers commented on Vanilla Ice playing in the arena....classy.
"Vanilla Ice. Nice."
Wow BTN analyst.
Word to your mother
lol at Bryant. He looked very scary complaining to the ref.
Tim has really improved his FT shooting and GRIII having a nice game
I'm sure we all watched the Michigan vs. West Virginia game...right? Did anyone else get the impression that Trey and Tim were auditioning for their future NBA roles? I think they will both be solid players in the NBA, but I also believe that they could benefit from another year in school.
Us fans, true story, but ain't gonna happen.
Harrison for EMU is just fading away on every shot and making all of them. I guess we get everyone's best because we are Michigan fergodsakes!
More proof people want to watch this team...Santa is at the game instead of prepping for Tuesday!
HELL OF A PASS BY MITCH
Am I the only one that feels like Hardaway really forces it too much?
Guys, let's have a full timeout and then 10 seconds later take a TV timeout. It's a brilliant idea. /s
Did anyone else just see that ass on that cheerleader?
I actually went back to see, so glad I did!
Double Double for Mitch! First of many hopefully.
...but does McGary remind you of Graham Brown...just a little?
Senior Graham Brown was a solid Big 10 player and Mitch is just a frosh. I like the comparison though - lots of hustle and he fights for his points.
He was due
you know there's a 99.5% chance he's going to take a 3
we're gonna cover the spread in this game, Ace you shoulda trusted your instincts
This is the best shooting Michigan team I can remember. We have so many guys that can make it rain from 3 . . . it's beautiful to watch.
BLAKE THROWIN DOWN
When McLimans throws down, it's like the Pistons playing Darko. You know you're celebrating a win.
Team is shooting .500 from the 3. cool.
: That's the same rate that Eastern is making their free throws
If I would have known Eastern was going to play so much up tempo I would have bet (in theory) a lot more!!!!
And all is well in Washtenaw County once more.
I just wish this team had a killer instinct and could close out teams. That's what is keeping us from being elite.
Burke and Thjr combined for 10/27 shooting (2/10 from 3pt)
Rest of the team was 25/42 (10/14 from 3pt)
Seemingly, our 2 best players had somewhat off games and we won by 39 - not too shabby.
We have 4 other guys that could be the best player on other teams. 4 other guys that were still the best players when on the floor if you take Burke and THJ away.
Good way to look at it. Solid win none the less!
Off games? Maybe they didn't shoot very well, but they had 4 more assists than the rest of the team, 15 (Burke 8, THjr 7 - career high) to 11.
THjr was also a perfect 6-6 from the line (4 more attempts than any other teammate) and led the team with 17 pts.
In short - we played one of our better games of the year when you consider the defense we were going up against.
McGary came of age tonight, he's only going to get better. Next year, he'll be very good...I think his Junior year, Hansborough status.
No recap from me, we play outstanding --- my only snowflake is that THJ played waaay too many minutes in the 2nd half. With that said, he had a #beastmode dunk after struggling the previous 4-5 minutes.
I thought the rotations in the first half were literally perfect - I also liked leaving McGary in during the 2nd half even when he was tired. He had to learn how to maintain the way he plays through the fatigue and I thought he did a tremendous job.
Oh, 2nd snowflake...MOAR McLimans. Not sure why he didn't get in until the very end. I like his game, when he did get in, he played extremely well in mop up duty.
Again, nothing to truly complain about, we handled business and I think playing a game vs. a funky defense is going to help us down the road. We could face a Syracuse in the Elite 8 or something and playing EMU tonight will only help.
We simply have too many weapons...we have 6 guys that are All-Conference calibur. Toss in LeVert for some good minutes, Horford, Max B and McLimans as serviceable big men and a heady backup PG...not sure what anyone can do.
Again, I think Duke and Indiana are the only teams that can truly play with us. Not saying we can't be beat, but those two are the only ones that I think would give us a run if we played best of 9, 11, etc.
Great win - GO BLUE!
Great day for Michigan Basketball.
Women's team destroyed valpo 73-32 and the Men beat down eastern like they should.
Michigan is now 50-8 all-time when ranked AP #2.
Kind of had a shock wave shoot through my brain when the BTN announcer said Michael Talley. Brought back memories of from a long time ago. I guess his son is on EMU now.
1. Michigan vs EMU
2. Michigan '97 season special
3. Basketball classic. 2012 Michigan vs MSU
I remember all the recruiting buzz about the 7ft Riley. He has an athletic build but is pretty useless at both ends of the court.
I also can't imagine how bad Purdue must be.
Lots of the usual UM positives but I am concerned about Spike's inability to play point and how Vogrich has totally disappeared. Don't even want to think about what this team would be like if Burke gone to the NBA.
FInally good size crowd and always love hearing the alumni band.
Vogrich not playing is a good sign. He's a below average big ten player. Not a good shooter not athletic. I'm sure he's a great kid but they're are better kids on the roster.
but Vogrich was Stauskas (one of the top 3 point shooters) in high school and part of his freshman year. It is "nice" that he can be not used and UM doesn't appear to need him now, but I think his problems are all between the ears - no shooter's confidence anymore. I would have liked to see him play a few more minutes in garbage time and try to run plays to force him to shoot.
to be sure, and Beilein is a good coach. Burke also deserve great deal of credit for managing the game as well as any PG. Loved when Beilein took Stauskas out after his behind the back pass late in the game yesterday... I wish our bigs played defensively as well as Indiana's. Our bigs also need to finish stronger offensively. Not sure we have a player like Victor Oladipo either that is our shut down defensive guard. UM IU will be a great matchup and it will be mostly about our open outside shots falling.
