Michigan basketball snowflake thread

This team fought their butts off today and I'm proud of them. No excuses and no points for moral victories, but we have something special brewing.

There is some talent in this freshman class. Maar, Dawkins, Doyle.....This team played great away against an MSU team led by three core Seniors. Edit. Can you imagine how Izzo would whine about losing starters playing freshman and having to play a walk on serious minutes today.

They fought to the last man and gave everything and darned near pulled it off.  I'm not surprised.  It's a Beilein trademark.  His teams come together as the season rolls on.  We're going to be tough for the rest of the season.

Feel like a replay of the Wisconsin game with my general thoughts.

What can you say - a great game and we were depleted like hell.

Turning point of the game was that foul by MAAR on Schilling that took him out of the game with 10 minutes to go in the 1st half.  We were dominating at that point and they had no answers.  MSu dominated rest of 1st half.

MAAR looks like the next Caris LeVert in terms of nobody turning superstar.  He is already well ahead of where Caris was at this point as a freshman.  I am being serious when I say if he is going to be a PG next year Walton could lose his starting job.  Most likely I guess they move him to SG but he is a revelation - already best penetrator (that's what she said) on team not named Caris.  If he ever gets a serious 3 pt shot he will be sick.

Who would have thought in December we would be saying "this game turned on MAAR".

Again no Donnal - Doyle looked so gassed, great effort from Max.  Dawkins played well.  Spike great.  Sad to see Chatman  unable to contribute almost anything - a mere 6-7 pts from him and we win.

Oh well, I am very exited for next year with what I am seeing with MAAR - I dont want to get too ahead of myself but it is difficult not to.  That guy just has game and its like he developed a year's worth in 6 weeks.

possession.

We just didn't have the horses to sustain an overtime - it was our best shot at winning.

With that said, what a fucking statement. These kids should come away from this realizing they can play with anyone.

Sparty should be fucking shamed that they needed OT - AT HOME - to beat us without not just Caris, but now Walton (and Donnal).

I'm disappointed, because they got you believing, but the poise, the courage, the promise they showed, I couldn't be more impressed short of a win at East Lansing.

say never. It ain't over yet. There were some dark moments when everyone was hating on Burke, remember? Right before the (first) Tourney. Some folks take longer...

... he might not ever bloom. No telling. But I do seriously think that folks giving up on him makes it almost certain he won't.

Still rooting... (this team as a whole, for example, under these conditions -- who woulda thunk it?).

what, with the 503 backend fetch going on, but curious if i have lost my objectivity.  it seemed like during the last 10-12 min of regulation sparty was playing the body literally every shot and pretty hard too, but no calls at all. that me, or am i a homer?

and didn't someone say at halftime that if the refs were calling the game halfway decent, we'd be up by... 10?

how long do we have to prepare for them at Crisler?

Vengeance -- *clean* vengeance. No need to stoop...

... and yeah, that's just how it goes. Gotta take it in stride. Kinda like, oh, injuries...

Is Belein won't be talking about how the whole team has broken limbs and ebola.

#classy

I may like this team more than last year's, just for their gritty, grit-tastic grit.  Still not done seeing them grow this year and I'm already jazzed for next season.

could have limped into Lansing and looked for a place to hide, but they didn't.  Very happy with the way this rag-tag group hung together and battled.  Don't whine about your injuries and illnesses, next man up.

There is a saying about teams developing and "learning to win":

- At first you lose games by large margins,

- Then you start losing games by very close margins,

- Then you learn how to win those same games by close margins,

- Then you learn how to win big.

This team is on the right track, and for the first time in a long time, they will all be back to show what they've learned.

Beilein and his staff continue to amaze.  No moral victories and no pats on the back in the loss but this group, under sized and outmanned just simply doesn't quit.  Great effort and a magician coaching!

I still think we're tourney bound.

MAAR is zooming up my favorite players list. I love how he plays. Love that he's fearless. He's fun to watch. The capper is how many people on this board thought he was beneath our program.

Dawkins is just a step below MAAR for me.

2 things that killed us were: 1) sitting spike and MAAR in the first half. If I were to criticize Beilein, I would say he overreacted to the fouls. 2) Not getting back on defense.  Didn't seem like we were crashing the glass - we shouldn't have given up so many fast breaks.

Still, hell of an effort by the team. I will be disapointed if we don't win big in AA.

The not getting back of defense was killer. As a team that doesn't get offensive boards much anyway, we should be sending everyone but the 5 back after ever shot, and getting into the right positions. Even after makes they'd get a transition bucket or foul call.

i still don't understand why he wasn't recruited.  he was a 4 time PA all state; twice first team.  scored a ton of points and rebounded well.

in the games against italy, i thought he looked pretty good; granted it was italy.

but he's 6'4"; not 5'10".  you would think all of those philly schools would at least be all over him.  i just don't get it.

Ok let's do this since we will do it all summer (too soon!!!)

Next year's lineup

  • PG - Walton
  • SG - MAAR
  • SF - Irvin
  • PF - Dawkins
  • C - Doyle

Backups -

PG: Spike (SG too in 2 PG lineups)

SG: Duncan

Chatman at SF/PF

Kid n Play at PF/C

Donnal at C

Thats a 10 deep rotation.  And if Doyle gets stamina and Dawkins and Chatman can make Beilein jumps, it looks very promising.  Now let's go get a few serious elite athletes in 2016.

i would like him to become strictly a #4 guy.  he has a decent stroke.  if he improves and can consistently knock down a 3, he could be of use there.

also, if JB doesn't land another good player for 2015, i can see max coming back.  i think a full year in the system will be huge for these frosh. and the bigs can learn to play the 4 a little more rather than just focusing on the 5.

Rahk should have touched the ball more late. I get why Spike had it, but he was fatigued and could have used a couple of possessions off. On those possessions, it felt like we went to Irvin, but rahk needs to be the second option. He's a versatile a scorer. He can drive, he can shoot, and he can shoot off balance and off the dribble. Second game in a row where he had an NBA-level stepback jumper. Guy is the second best offensive player right now. Irvin's touches need to be brought down teemendously. Just be freshman GRIII. Open threes, rebounds, back cuts, and that's it. No reason for him to dribble the ball.

MSU's freshman class scored a grand total of 0 points today.  Encouraging for their future.  They better hope Davis is a 1 and done type talent because they are going to need it next year.  Trice and Dawson (finally) leave.  They do get that McQuaid kid which is a good shooter but Davis is the centerpiece.  I didnt see a damn thing out of their 3 freshmen today.

I think the losses to NJIT and Eastern Michigan are going to be too much to overcome for any sort of tourney spot, unfortunately. 13-9 right now, should be 15-7 with tough losses to Wisconsin, MSU, and Arizona. I actually think this team could win the NIT though - even though that isn't exactly what any of us wanted coming into the season.

Postseason play is postseason play.

It's more games and an opportunity to raise a banner. Even if it isn't the one we wanted coming into the season, you shoot for making the best of your situation.

But with what I've seen today, I'm still not giving up hope for an NCAA bid.

Beilein doesn't even mention the players injured unless he's asked about them. Speaks volumes. The way Michigan played today shows me that they're gonna beat state on 2/17 at Crisler Center.

"Add in the fact that Trice wasn't 100% and only scored 8 and it was damn near the perfect storm frankly". - RCMB

Seriously. They're complaining about INJURIES over there!
