Michigan Basketball. bummer.

Submitted by swan flu on

Well that game was a bummer.  Virginia caught fire at the end.  Does this affect our season's aspirations?

Viriginia was favored in this game.    No basketball team wins every game.  These same threads kept coming up last year when Michigan lost a game.  College basketball is not college football.  Relax, they will be fine

We are a Top-15 team with 4 returning starters who just beat Memphis and UCLA while playing Duke close.

Virginia lost to TCU.

Should have won this game.

People are worried because 2009 started with us losing a bunch of games to average teams we should have beaten while we were in a similiar position.

Virginia reminded me of Wisconsin a little bit. Suffocating D and didn't make too many mistakes. Thee season is far from over. Our senior leadership plus Timmy will have our team ready to play. As someone on umhoops said, 12-2 going into Indiana is possible.

That isn't a gimme but it can happen.

Still jet lagged from the trip to Maui. Waaaay to early to be worried. That, and we beat Ohio on Saturday. I'm still way too giddy about that to let this loss bother me.

The effort was not there tonight.  I think they showed up and expected to win.  Give credit to Virginia.  They played very good defense for most of the game.  Our guys were not boxing out anything, not following their shots, and really just didn't seem focused at times.  Hopefully they can make some adjustments and move on.

and recruiting has really picked up, but the Christian offer is one I never understood.  Sure you need depth players but it seems like we already had a guy like that in McLimans and scholarships were/are tight.  Hopefully he proves me wrong.

It's nice that the NBA lockout is over so that Darius Morris can get paid a lot of money to sit on some team's bench, because he wouldn't make any money sitting on Michigan's bench behind Trey Burke.

Long trip back from Maui. Rough road game. Good defense. Good big man. Good coach. We can't afford to have Hardaway struggle during games or this is a likely outcome.  On the bright side, Burke looked very good.  Hardaway is tough. this team is tough.  Better days ahead.

Frustrating game to watch. Foul trouble, poor shot selection, leaving their shooters wide open for 3's all night and THJ getting 5 points on the road isn't a recipe for success.

I'm not jumping off a bridge after this loss or anything. But, there are some holes in this team (interior D) and team streakiness shooting that scare me a bit. I think this is one of those teams that could beat anybody in the nation or lose a stinker of a game to a lower division team.

On a positive note - I LOVE what I've seen of Trey Burke so far. Kid has great court demeanor and confidence for a young point guard.

Brush this one off - GO BLUE

This makes me want to vomit, but go Duke tonight!

I see it alot in the bigger young kids at the HS level too.  They play afraid...afraid to commit a foul...afraid to make a mistake...afraid to play physical.  You can tell by the T-Rex arms stance when not involved.

Only having Morgan inside is gonna hurt.  I'm actually missing Gumby (Zack Gibson) more than anyone because he could give some quality minutes and fouls while Sims rested.

Hardaway had a rough, rough night.  Several times when Michigan seemed to be making a run, the officials kept Virginia in the game.  Tough to win on the road.  Then Virginia caught fire from downtown and we were toast.  Coaches need to recognize when that zone is getting toasted and switch back.  Maybe abandon it all together.

Just got back from Charlottesville.  The team looked sluggish, and Hardaway was a non-factor, sitting almost all of the first half after getting two quick fouls.  Smotrycz got called for invisible fouls and spent quite a bit of time on the bench before fouling out.  Maybe the red-eye from Maui plus the flight to this game took a lot out of them.  They played hard every second of every minute but did not seem to have it against a very aggressive defense (that rarely got called for anything).

That's what I chalk it up too. However, metric play wasn't that impressive even when he was in the game. I saw his played as quite timid. I only recall two hard drives to the basket, and not much on the outside. With THJ not having a strong game,I really believe metric should had been more of a factor.

I am worried about how soft Morgan looked inside. Lost a couple of rebounds because he didn't bring it down hard, and softly brought the ball down to his waist. He seems to not be able to finish inside like a big man should. Dunk the ball, why are you tyring to benson it???

Well, after this and after what osu did to duke, we may want to temper our "B1G contender" talk this season. I'd be happy with a top-3 B1G finish and then champship next season with McGary on board.
