In 1965, Michigan lost to UCLA in the NCAA title game. Why did we have the trophy in this photo?

This still happens today The runner-up recieves a silver-plated trophy. We got one in 2013. The teams that lose in the Final Four receive bronze-plated ones.
Example: here is the modern day runner-up trophy. This is used in every NCAA sport.

Why am I not surprised you are the first one to respond.

...yeah, but WHICH WD?

Clearly the real one, as evidenced by the gazillion mgopoints he possesses.

Never knew about this.
Overall we have one gold, five silver and one bronze.

Also, here is the trophy teams receive if they lose in the Final Four or national semifinals in all bracket sports.
Notice how it says "semifinalist" since national 3rd place games were abolished a long time ago. Michigan actually beat Kansas State in the 1964 NCAA 3rd place game.
In non-bracketed sports, the teams that finish in 3rd and 4th place in their NCAA Championships receive a bronze-plated trophy.

These guys were the very first college team I watched regularly on TV. I was so smitten with Cazzie that I'd run down the floor during a game with my thumbs up, just like he did. And there the resemblance ended.

Tis the season to be jolly 'cause we've got Cazzie, Bill and Ollie...

Bill Buntin and Cazzie Russell were an incredible inside-outside duo. Buntin averaged 22 ppg and 13 rpg in his career and Russell put up 31 ppg his senior year - with no three-point shot.

I went on a cruise around Italy this year with Cazzie's backup for the 65-66 team. Great guy, but he admitted that Strack pretty much only played 7 people. He ended the season with 6 points as a result. He said Cazzie was totally amazing as a player and a person.
