Michigan Band vs Opponent

Submitted by howarddestroysherbie on
I was at the previous two games. The first game I sat on the south end zone, and yesterday by the north end zone. I must say that Michigans Band is awfully quiet compared to the other schools. Even during halftime, you can hardly hear Michigans band. I'm not sure if I'm the only one that notices that, but I think they need to turn it up a notch. But yesterday was one of those perfect days, watching State lose and Michigan show that they may be a dominant factor in the Big Ten.

especially during the game- ND's entire band was on the field. I don't think that is the whole band out their during the game and they are jammed into seats. I wasn't in my seat during halftime so I'll have to take your judgement on that portion of the post.

Notre Dame marches about 400 people, while we only march about 260 (out of about 330), so there's going to be a huge sound differential. Also, the endzones are horrible acoustically.

They all play in the stands, but there are only a certain amount of spots in the performance block, and those who don't make it are reserves. Each week, these reserves try to get into the block, along with members of the band who are challenged by their rank leaders. It keeps everyone on their toes and forces them to improve or risk being a reserve. Also, I'm not 100% sure about the 330; we had 340 last year and this year's band is smaller, I think.

Please email director Scott Boerma at [email protected] to let him know this. Last I discussed this with him, he didn't feel there was a volume issue at all. Now it's to the point where we're pumping in Seven Nation Goddamn Army and we're all thrilled about it.

Mind you I'm all the way in Section Denard (16) HOWEVA It was difficult to hear MMB last year. I have not heard the band AT ALL this season. He should have someone come to the other end of the stadium. All you see are the instruments moving back and forth. We all try to guess what's playing. At least with The Victors we can see the students pumping their fist so we can try to sing along. It might also be intersting for his representative to hear hoe LOUD the opposition band sounds to us from their position on the field.

No offense, but as a fellow marching band nerd that also follows BOA and DCI, I would rather hear pipped in seven nation army than a marching band version of thriller...I just shake my head everytime the MMB plays thriller in the stands. Thriller kills all the energy in the student section. I know you are pissed the AD is pipping music over the MMB taking away performance spots, but honestly, some of the selections by the MMB kills the energy in the student section.

... but it breaks my heart that we can't hear the Victors even once out in Section Denard. I love that name btw, and section 16 is where I've sat since 1994 with the exception of my 4 years in the (previously louder) MMB. I will absolutely be emailing Boerma, because game day doesn't feel like game day without the Victors and T&W, and seeing that it's being played over in the student section doesn't count.
