Michigan Up to 6 Satellite Camps

Submitted by alum96 on

With an enthusiasm unknown to mankind Webb has apparently reported Harbaugh will be running 6 satellite camps - I believe the ones in Houston, Tampa and California are new info?   I thought these camps would be 2-3 days but apparently they are all 1 day variety.  Just about every day from June 5-Jun 10 the staff will be in a new corner of the woods.

Michigan will be at a satellite camp in Prattville, Alabama on June 5 and Dallas on June 9.  Per Scout.com's Sam Webb,   Michigan will also be at satellite camps in Tampa, Florida (June 6), Houston (June 8) and California (June 10).

I think these satellite camps are such a phonomenal idea. Hitting up recruiting hotbeds Alabama, Texas, California, and Florida in a 5 day stretch? I don't think Harbaugh sleeps.

I didn't see anything but I'd have to think  has to be LA.  Highest concentration of players and he can say hi to Mora while he is over there.

The one confusing to me is Tampa rather than SE FL.  That area between Miami and Ft Ld is teeming with prospects.  Even Orlando would be more central - Tampa is a serious drive for a 1 day camp for anyone from SE FL.

I would certainly prefer LA, but that's the only city of the Big 3 that Harbaugh hasn't coached in. He spent a lot of time in both SF and SD so he may have more connections there. As for Tampa, there is tons of talent there, and Orlando isn't noticeably closer to SE FL to make a difference.

Are about an hour apart, about 70 miles, but traffic on I-4 makes it a good hour trip. If you drive faster than the speed limit (65), and are lucky. If they held a camp in Lakeland, that would be a half hour trip for both recruits coming from Tampa and the ones coming from Orlando, and cover the central I-4 corridor in the middle of the state.

Another good place would be to hold one at IMG Academy in Bradenton, I used to have a condo right down the street from there, they used to be Nick Bolletteri's tennis academy, where Anna Kornakova, Maria Sharapova, and other great tennis players were developed. Later, he sold out to IMG and they branched out to train players from a variety of sports, most notably football, where they turn out top recruits on a regular basis every year now. If you look at the rivals top 100 players you will see three five star players from this school for 2016.

To mention Armwood, but it is much closer to Tampa than Orlando, same with Plant.

The Miami area has so much talent, it would be better to have a camp there to cover the East Coast, and another camp for the Tampa - Orlando area, and that should cover the main hotbeds for talent in the state, except Jacksonville.

I imagine that there will be recruits from other counties/areas outside of Hillsborough. Lots of good players in Polk, Manatee, Pasco, Lee, etc. George Campbell was from Tarpon Springs IIRC. Not as important, but this part of the state is also sometimes described as "midwestern." Lots of transplants from the northeast and the midwest. Certainly moreso than southeast Florida or northern Florida/Panhandle.

Can anyone comment on whether these camps are open at all and/or if they are worth attending? I doubt I can help, but would love to if possible.

If the idea of these camps is to gain an edge on truly elite talent, then the tampa area makes a ton of sense. Tampa has become an insane hotbed, and the better part of that talent is coming out of a short list of schools.  3 of ESPN's top 10 recruits last year came out of tampa area schools.  Get in with the coaches at said schools (IMG, Armwood, East Lake to name a few), and we have a pipeline to consistent talent.  Tampa's proximity to Orlando and Jacksonville (both are back and forth trips in the same day) opens up two more major recruiting "markets" for one day camps.  In the case of last year, adding the orlando and jacksonville markets would have meant two more top 10 kids made the camp (or 50% of the top ten kids in the country)...tampa makes sense.

on our roster, and how are they all going to find playing time?  i see a problem with this strategy.   there will be disgruntled satellites everywhere.

Nice to see these camps popping up in very important and strategic areas when it comes to football recruiting and talent as well, and probably a great way to market Michigan there too. Indeed, one day we might see the United Federation Of Planets, but for now it is the United Federation Of Harbaugh from the look of things. Perhaps the former will also be formed as a result of Harbaugh.

Does that make Harbaugh Captian Jean-Luc Picard? EDIT: after googling, I realize that name is from Star Trek, and I knew it only from the song Banditos by the Refreshments. I never knew that that was a reference to something until today.

I don't see anything the NCAA can do about this. Although they are very capable of passing dumb ass rules. If the coaches wish to donate their time or if they are getting paid. What can the NCAA do? They could tell the schools they can't do camps outside a certain area I guess. But these camps are not sponsored or backed by the University (I could be wrong).

I dont see how it could possibly be outlawed. Harbaugh and staff are donating thier time to a camp sponsored by an entity outside the NCAAs jurisdiction. The NCAA cant touch this practice.

What is the general policy/feeling about going to these camps to watch?  I live close enough to the camp in Grand Prairie that I would take a half day off work to go see the coaches in action, but I can't seem to find any info on whether that is allowed or frowned upon or what.  Anyone have any experience with this?

I believe PSU and ND are the only 2 who have done it and it was 1 year and 1 location.  So there is not really a lot of precedent and I am sure every school would have their own rules.  Worse case scenario pay $25 to get in and watch.
