well that's just, like, your opinion, man
Why not? Looks like a great regional
South Dakota state is no slouch, and if we win, we play either VCU or Akron..which are also 2 quality teams that won't go down easy.
Honestly, who the hell goes down easily in the NCAA Tournament?
Two seasons ago for one. Loved that game, esp living in TN.
I'll take VCU or Akron over a lot of possible matchups. Would you rather face a major-conference team in the second round?
VCU is very athletic and forces a lot ot tournovers. Michigan will have to focus on defense for that game as VCU can hang with Michigan's offense. Akron would be easier after losing their PG a few games ago. VCU has a has a chance to go far this year if they have the right match ups with their up tempo offense and defense. Half court teams will give them trouble.
BASKETBALL. Who cares who they play. If they play well enough they will win. If they screw around and not share the ball and stand around waiting for Burke to do something they will lose. You have to play good teams throughout the tournament. There are no easy matchups. Be ready. Play hard. Win. Don't do that and you'll go home.
Well...the reality is:
If we can't beat South Dakota State, VCU, or Akron, then we don't deserve to advance. That's how the tourney works.
This isn't about playing teams that are worse than you; it's about proving that you're better than your opponent.
We should just take this and feel lucky that we're playing in Auburn Hills.
As you were.
Second part isn't. The point of it is to win 6 games and cut the nets. They don't give you more for beating 3 one seeds than they do if you never play anyone higher than a four seed. It's not a gauntlet. Breaks help. And if you didn't want to play seeds lower than you we wouldn't have all this effort to getting a one seed where everyone you play before the Final Four is worse thn you. They'd just throw all the names in a hat and draw them randomly if it didn't matter.
Crap. I do not like this. South Dakota? They have that good point guard... and we've never dealt well with those this season. I hope I don't see another App. State. I think the NCAA knew we don't match up well and put us with them intentionally, remember who Gene Smith's roommate is???? And the NCAA punishes Miami, typical childish response. Miami got disrespected with that 2 seed and I thought we should've been a THREE at minimum.
totally agree, after the lackluster effort in last year's tournament, I am predicting a nice run and matchup with Kansas!
If we win round one which we should at home, I think we match up well with VCU....they are an offensive team with poor rebounding and average defense....I would have been concerned if we had a team that resembles Wisconsin...and Kansas is an overrated seed IMO. I like our draw
UM underperforms against physical, defensive teams like MSU and Wisconsin. We do fine against smaller, more offense-oriented teams.
There are very few blowouts in the tourney. At some point this team just has to decide they are gonna be mentally and physically tougher than the team they are playing. You are goig to have to beat great teams to acheive your goals. If this team plays well that can beat anyone I think most of this season they beat themselves. They lost to Penn state and got down huge in most of the big games on the road. We have talent, play good basketball and let the cards fall where they may.
Average defense? What VCU team did you watch?
Isn't that what everyone was saying about the OHIO bobcats last year?
Yeah, we lost in the first round last year. The year before we trashed Tennessee by 30. Every year is different.
What if he never had sex with a woman because he's a homosexual? Is that ok for you and your bravado?
You're picking at the word choice rather than the message
No way bro, the fatties are alway down.
You do realize that last year's team and this year's team consist of very different personnel? Everyone should relax. Michigan has proven to be more than a match for any team outside of it's conference and we're going to be reminded of that fact in the coming weeks.
lol someone would have cried about the match up if it was Duke or St. Bunkus prep.
be ready Thursday to win the first of 6 in a row!
And in the Kansas bracket.
Rather them or UNC over almost anyone else we would be forced to go up against
Except gonzaga. This is perfect for Michigan. 2 home games to get into the sweet 16 then against a Kansas team that is a very susceptible 1
VCU freaks me out a little. What is Spike gonna do against their havoc D if he needs to play extended minutes? Scary.
VCU wants to play up-tempo. I'm OK with that. GRIII should have a big day.
Transition 3s. If he's on could bode well.
We should move all practices to the real Bil Davidson player development center this week...The Palace!
Dunk, dunk, dunk, & dunk
Spike only has 9 turnovers in 240 minutes, he's not Trey Burke but having a backup PG like Spike is a strength against pressing team.
Number 4 seed vs 13. Deja vu anyone?
Nate Wolters is a stud. Probably the 2nd best PG in the nation. Luckily we have the 1st. Won't be easy but if we can limit Nate we have a massive talent advantage and should have a good home crowd.
So glad it's on Thursday/Saturday. I've got tickets for those days.
Michigan better be ready to play in round one. They are going against one of the top three point shooting teams in the country I believe.
Nate Wolters is an All-American PG for South Dakota St. Very good player, the matchup between him and Burke will be great.
Well....SECOND team All American PG.
it appears a lot of the uptempo teams are in the south; kansas, ucla, unc, fla. well, UM will get their chance to prove they are an uptempo team.
Scared of Kansas. Mostly because of Withey, won't be fun facing a 7 ft. center that we can't handle on D and is a good shot blocker on those Burke forays to the hoop
If we are playing Kansas, we are in the Sweet 16. Worrying about match-ups seems a little silly to me, especially for the projected third game of the tournament.
Think we'll handle VCU fine if we get past Wolters.
Would hate if we were playing ND St
We'd do well, but it would be like this
Does anyone know what time we play thursday ?
When do they announce what time we play?
Can someone give me a direct link to the bracket?
Or go to espn
but check here.. its being updated as things are announced.
What session do we buy tickets for?
If anyone takes this team lightly, I will slap you in the face.
We are the last fanbase who should be taking anyone lightly. Especially in the NCAAs.
Luckily, Michigan got Auburn Hills so that should serve as a de-facto home court advantage.
I just pray that the Thursday game is on in the afternoon or night, and there is no scheduling conflict with hockey in the CCHA Playoffs on Saturday SHOULD Michigan advance to the Third Round.
I know what you mean and I really hope that our team will not take anyone lightly (which I expect). But I think that it makes no difference if fans do. We really have no effect on the outcome
Please explain how you come to the conclusion as a fan base we have anything to do with the out come of the game if we take a team lightly? If by sitting at home and saying a team they are playing is a push over effects the teams mind set going into a game, we have more pressing issues to worry about as a fan base.
Well, I suppose it's conceivable that if players do read this site and see us all calling SDSU a bunch of bums, they could fail to take them seriously. But I hope they aren't wasting their time scanning internet message boards in the first place.
Be careful... if you show even the tiniest respect for SDSU, your vagina's manhood will be called into question. Or something.
I ain't scared of no Jackrabbits. Bring it.
harmless looking Easter Bunny!! Boo Jackrabbits!!
is still terrifying, many years later. In all fairness to me, ixcuincle had a cute little white bunny as his avatar, and I thought his post about the jackrabbit was ironic. He quickly switched his avatar up, thus making my response look wacky. (shakes fist at air)
no matter what. I just really want the Big 10 to do well. I am so sick of all the SEC football love. It would be great if the Big 10 just dominates, showing everyone what a tough season we had!!
I personally would rather see a more conventional team than VCU. That is going to be one tough team to beat.
VCU is probably the weakest #5 seed in the field. People are overrating them because of what they did two years ago. They're not that great this year.
I would MUCH rather play them on Thu than Sat. Their high pressure style is quite jarring and hard to prepare for. Jus think about Hardaway and Stauskas handling more balls out of backcourt. This could get very dicey.
VCU is extremely reliant on its press. Beat the press and you score. I would not be shocked if they lost to Akron, and I'm not that concerned about them if we have to play them. Remember, we have one of the lowest turnover averages in the country. I'm sure Shaka Smart is not happy to be in our subregional.
Looks like I am not the only one worried about VCU. Jay Bilas got VCU going to the Final Four.
VCU's style of play might just be what we need to get our mojo back.
They r a 9
How is Oregon a 12? I think Indiana is in trouble. NC St. can take them out.
But I new we were going to get South Dakota State or VCU. We got both - if we win the first game. We can beat any team. The reverse is true when we our shooters are cold.
Doug "Man, do I love all things Michigan" Gottlieb is already talking up the Michigan upset in round one.
Does the VCU game start? Actually I am in need I the whole Auburn Hills schedule and my googling expertise is letting me down so far
Wait until about 9-10PM and some times should start trickling out for Thursday.
and I like our matchup with (probably) VCU. When people turn the ball over less than VCU does, VCU loses. Trey Burke will carry us to victory
Could you imagine. Could you even IMAGINE if Michigan played san diego state and Steve Fisher.
I enjoy Steve Fisher and I know he still likes Michigan. My friend sat next to him at a football game last year in the Big House.
We played them like two years ago at home.
Why does everything this guy says get negged? What am I missing?
I think Kansas is insanely overrated and we couldn't ask for a much better path to the elite eight. Of the one seeds, I'd pick Kansas to face and VCU and SDSU is beatable for sure.
Could have been worse, could have been better. Time for the team to focus at the task ahead and for us to hopefully enjoy the ride.
I think this team deserves a 3 based on the totality of its season, but they really do not deserve it based on their inability to finish the season strongly. They only have themselves to blame for losing to Wisconsin twice and Penn State on the road. A few shots go the other way and this team is a two, or maybe even a one, seed, but they just could not win when it counted most.
Oh well, at least they are in Auburn Hills. Maybe a 4 seed will give them a chip on their shoulder to go out and prove others wrong.
All palace games are Thursday/Saturday.
have bad feelings from almost losing to Farleigh Dickenson.
Lock down their PG and hit the boards. Their tallest player with many minutes is 6'8" and tallest player period is 6'9". Box them out and go crazy athletic.
Minnesota beat them earlier in the year by 24 or something like that. Take it seriously and show up for the game and let's go.
seems to be the main problem
This has been the one thing I think Coach B has struggled with all year. He just doesn't trust us with 2 bigs in the game.
good luck getting a ticket for Saturday if both Michigan and Michigan State win on Thursday.
No way they should be 3 seeds ahead of us.
New Mexico: Lost 81 to 58 to Air Force....Seriously?
Marquette: Lost 82 to 49 to Florida. (who is also a 3rd seed). Yep...Marquette is just as good as Florida. Louisville beat you by 19. Plus, you lost to Green Bay. Yep....Green Bay. Pleeeezzzzz
I agree with.
We can bitch and moan, but this is our most legit argument. There are 2 teams that have no business being ahead of us...especially when we have to play in the B1G.
I'm fine with trading 1 seed spot for home court advantage and then possibly heading into the Sweet 16.
New Mexico has a better RPI than Michigan and didn't lose to Penn State and wasn't 6-6 in it's last twelve games. I appreciate this is a Michigan fan blog, but the Maize and Blue glasses have been a little thick over the past couple weeks with this team. If you looked at it through unbiased eyes, that #1 ranking was a long time ago and this should have not been a surprise.
Against SDSU we need to play straight up man...I would say we need to go big and play 2 post players to gather up all the boards from BOTH teams. And go get the win.
Assuming we play VCU in the next round...we need to play a lot more of our traditional lineup and we need to go ZONE more than we normally do.
Both of these games are winnable, but both are going to require Coach Beilein to come out of his comfort zone. Game one, he's going to have to play Morgan and McGary together. Game two he's going to have to play zone for extended minutes.
Let's hope we do both.
Shaka is a college buddy (Kenyon undergrad, Michigan grad school for me), and I would love to see that matchup in the second round. I love all of the teams who play fast, becuase Michigan is almost unwatchable in the half court (esp. if teams can keep Burke from getting the ball). This should play to our advantage, and you've got to beat the best to the be the best. Let's enjoy the ride, and hope that Trey and company can make some memories for us before the team turns over a little next year. This was a special team to watch, and we should enjoy it while all of these guys are still here.
VCU then Kansas, weak we can take that I'm a little worried about the Georgetown game, that will be the game!
Kansas will kill us on the glass though. That is one of the concerns there
Yep, that's their website. They lost to Minnesota at Minneapolis, 88-64. They beat IUPUI twice. Also, their colors are yellow and blue...
With this bracket, we can either lose in the first game or make it to the Final Four.
He immediately tweeted that SD St pt grd is better than Trey......screw that fat turd
Go to the top of the thread and change your "Threshold" to -1 and hit save settings.
I think the biggest thing we had to avoid in the 1st two rounds was a team that had some sort of interior size/rebounding advantage over us. If we shoot so poorly that we lose to SDSU then we DESERVE the loss. And against VCU, it is strength on strength. We are the the best at preventing turnovers, they are the best at causing them. So bring it--I bet our guys can keep the turnovers limited enough to keep VCU from getting too many cheap points while at the same time I expect several fast break dunks coming after Burke & Co. break the press down.
It won't be easy, but what HAS been easy for this team in the last month? If they don't start playing better then they have been it won't matter past the first weekend anyway.
we had trouble for a few minutes against the psu press. other than that, we've had no trouble all year long.
we have 4 starters that can handle the ball the ball a bit. plus they will have size and athleticism advantage. that is key to breaking the press and getting easy dunks.
in which running down the clock was in our favor.
If we get pressed in the first half, we won't need to be cautious, just beat it and go dunk the ball. Or hit Stauskus for the wide open three.
And yes, Trey can handle the ball a bit. So can McGary as a relief option when we don't need to worry about his foul shooting.
According to CBS, Gonzaga was the last 1 in, and Miami was first 2 seed. So why don't they pair them together, instead of having the last 2 seed (osu) be placed there
If Miami was the 2 seed out West OSU would be a 2 in same region IU is 1 seed.I looked at it briefly and I don't see any way Miami and Gonz could have been 1-2 in same region without breaking the rule re teams in same confer playing each other before reg final or ending up with a region with IU #1 and OSU #2 is same region.
I think they go by distance instead of No. 1 seed when placing the 2s. As in OSU is the weakest No. 2, so they play farthest from home. The No. 1 seed in the region is irrelevant.
Have to be a very happy man today.
I'm in love with the draw. You're probably actually pretty happy too. KU is a tough matchup for Michigan, but things are pretty ok for you guys otherwise.
"But the play was really good Mrs. Lincoln."
Motto of this team needs to be...
I said earlier this year that teams like Baylor and VCU would give us hell. I don't like our odds.
NM is in the strongest conference rpi wise-fwiw
To drastically lowered expectations..
ill accept a 4 seed as long as we stay home in Auburn Hills...HUGE! i
I don't know if you guys have looked at the entire bracket...but look out world. The B1G got some very nice draws...
Is it going to happen? No. But you could make a legitimate case for 5 or 6 B1G teams to make it to the Elite 8.
first time ever 5 teams in the same conf make the final 4.
why cant we play tennessee in the first round?
I'm really surprised at all the fear over VCU. They're a team that preys on poor ball handling and lack of athleticism - two things we don't have a problem with. They'll also be basically be playing a road game.
All the games they lost were to teams that had good guards. They're a good version of Arkansas. I also like that NC State could knock off Kansas.
turned the ball over a lot, but we get hyper when we see open court, Hardaway especially, he makes very sketchy decisions in the open court sometimes.
Our biggest challenge in that game will be deciding when to take the bait and beat them at the own game and make them pay for pressing and when to pull it back out and run a half court set. If we are able to beat the press consistently there could be a ton of open threes for our wings. My biggest fear is the JB will play it just break the press and regroup at half court. VCU is a team that could beat us, they are also a team that we could run out of the gym like Tenessee 2011 if we take it to them after we break the press.
Coach B likes the small lineup with Spike and Trey in at same time so I wonder if we'll see a lot of that if we play VCU?
We'll need another ball handler.
That said playing against Victor Oladipo probably helps Burke, but we'll still need another ball handler.
I'd play both together and go 2-3 for extended minutes. Make them shoot over you, if they start making shots, go back to man-to-man and out-talent them to a win.
I think McGary has to be the X-Factor vs. SDSU on the boards. And I agree with a poster earier in this thread that GRIII should have an impact vs. VCU against their pressure.
So where are the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games being played for our bracket?
Are at the Palace. Hope it's a home game atmosphere.
I like our draw a lot. I'm looking at the other 3 seeds and i dont see one that i think has an easier path than we do to the Elite 8.
You said the other 3 seeds, but we're a 4. But I'm sure you may have meant that we may have a better draw than the 3-seeds.
I meant the 3's. That's the slot we were thinking (hoping) we'd get. I'm not sure we're not in a better place being a 4 all things considered. I wouldnt want MSU's path that's for sure.
I like how little schools like SDSU have gone to these commercially-designed logos, whereas the big boys like Kansas can stick with the old-school paint-by-numbers type.
queme los barcos.
I'll take a repeat of our last game against SD State. We beat them by 36. Of course, Glen Rice was playing for Michigan then.
Nate Wolters is going to be a challenge. Burke is really gonna have to take it to him. SDSU's 24 point loss at Minnesota was without Wolters, so not entirely indicative of what they're capable of. They also had an impressive road win at 3 seed New Mexico.
Wolters had a 50 point game earlier this year as well. Here's his game log: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/players/89494
Actually it looks like they're a perfect match for Michigan. They can't rebound! Wolters is second on the team in rebounding. Burke just needs to cancel out Wolters and the rest should take care of itself.
Well, a partial one anyway.
I didn't want to go to far with this yet, but using some calculations from Massey's matchup estimating, the hypothetical matchups here would present a fairly decent road to start. For those that don't care for tables, the most likely sceanrio based on Massey's assumptions would create Michigan / VCU and Kansas / UNC matchups, with a 62% probability of advancing to face the survivor of Kansas / UNC.
Does anybody have an idea when the game times will be announced?
ESPN will be 1st to have it
So they will probably have us play early on Thursday to avoid the play-in teams playing the early game after playing Tuesday night. 12:00 or 2:30 is my guess.
I like the seeding, and great to see michigan playing at the palace
25-9 (13-30,won Summit Conf (league Oakland is in),lost to Minnesota,Oakland,Bama. 74 points per game,3 guys +40% 3 pt shots......be nice if NC St upsets Kansas
After a brief glance, here is my initial elite eight prediction:
Imo, the Big East has favorable draws all over the place.
advancing that far.
Isnt VCU perfect matchup for us, a up tempo fast pace game?
And why the hell does everyone keep talking about NDSU point guard like he is amazing he averages 3 assists a game.
Why does everyone keep calling them NDSU? Travel a bit south my friend.
NDSU has been in the media more for 1AA football championship.
only using the wrong state.
(22 PPG and 39% 3-Point shooting) and we play crappy perimeter defense. If our defense wasn't so suspect, people wouldn't be eager to pick the upset. If Timmy's ankle is all good, I'd put him on Wolters and have him lock it down.
If we are as good as we are supposed to be this bracket should be really favorable for us. If we get through the first two games we should be happy to play Florida as the 3 seed. They aren't bad but they aren't as good as they are ranked either. Who knows from there.
You forget about Kansas?
Also, I'd rather be playing VCU in the Thirsty-32 round than UNC. Kansas over UNC is not a given. UNC is playing well.
Even after giving due respect to everybody who made it, I'm pretty sure this is the easiest draw Michigan has had for their first week since the 1980's. Michigan will either have to play way below their talent level or have an opponent play way above theirs to lose either of the first two games.
Once you get to the second week, they're all tough, barring a small conference team having a three-day miracle to get into the second week. Getting to the second week will be progress for the program, and any other wins will be "gravy."
Everybody at the WWL is talking like we're going to lose.
I think they see us regressing and not progressing. I think it's more a case of needing to get out of the B1G and face some less dominant defenses and big bodies.
Does everyone's upset team ever come true? They usually get drilled and some team no one picked makes a run.
Bilas seems to think we are going to lose again NDSU... Surely we won't lose first round?
They are a small team like us so our weakness at reb shouldn't be a problem.Maybe this is the game Morgan breaks out of his slump?
For those that say MM beat Sd st by 24, Wolters didn't play.
scheduled yet for Thursday?
SDSU is a win, not worried. VCU is one team I wanted to avoid, as well as Georgetown. Think we match up better with Florida so I will root for them. Kansas is a tough matchup for us as well should we get that far, big athletic guys and a center who lets nothng happen inside defensively. BUt, KU has had a few bad games, as has G'town.
SDSU has the longest home win streak in the country. Hope we fill up the palace and make it as far from a home game for them as possible.
First, one OT point: I am the child of SUNY Albany profs, and grew up a stone's throw off campus. As a kid, I went to SUNYA football and bball games, which were D-3 back then. And now we get Duke - w/the whole country rooting for us, no doubt. Cannot tell you how sweet it'd be to actually pull that one off. Hope I can count on my MGoFamily to root a little extra hard for the Great Danes. (As if you needed any motivation.)
As for (the other) us: I know SD State seems like a trendy upset pick to a lot of people, but am I the only one not that scared? They lost 9 games this year, i.e. more than we did, against considerably weaker competition. And I'd sure as hell rather play a team whose best player is their PG, than, say, in the frontcourt. Burke plays D. As we all know, we're certainly capable of just not showing up and making an early exit, but I don't think this is such a bad match-up. Ditto for the region as a whole. Not saying we're likely to get past Kansas (or even VCU, perhaps), but the South seems not nearly as bad as the Midwest: 'Ville, Duke, and Sparty as the top 3? Yeesh.
Go Blue! Go Great Danes!
My wife grew up in Albany. We'll definitely be rooting for them as well.
My Dad went to UM and settled in Albany (he came here for law school). He loved Michigan and everything associated with it, and when I was growing up here we were the only Blue family I knew. Yearly trips to Ann Arbor for homecoming were a highlight, and my two brothers and I all went west to Michigan. I went to UAlbany's campus high school, The Milne School, and learned to drive on the UAlbany campus. My husband and I now live in the shadow of that campus, and, short of Michigan getting to the Final Four or further, nothing would make me happier than a Great Dane upset of the Great Blue Devil.
Dicky V picked Michigan to go to the final 4 lmao.
Fell to the floor during this. I so want to drink the kool-aid
I take back everything I've ever said about Dickie V being a blowhard windbag.
Vitale just picked us to reach the Final 4, considering the source I don't know if I should feel better about our chances.
Vitale is usually pro-Michigan. One reason why he's never bothered me that much.
Vitale has lost it. Michigan will struggle just to make it to the Sweet Sixteen. Unless the last couple of weeks of underperforming have been an elaborate ruse by Beilein like that one episode of "Coach".
South Dakota has the #209 ranked defense. (For reference: Penn St #135, Nebraska #115, Northwestern #150). There will be no first round upset this year.
Michigan struggles vs teams with Elite defenses such as Kansas, Georgetown, or Florida. This team has sweet-16 berth and no further written all over it.
Kansas is the worst of the one seeds, IMO (loss to TCU, blown out by Baylor, etc). Not to say they will be easy, but if I had to pick a one seed to face it'd be either Kansas or Indiana.
If we make it past this weekend, WATCH OUT
Game will be session 2 on Thursday. 715 tip
....source? I need the whole schedule still no googleluck
Aywhere on the Internets, but here ya go
I will be rooting for ANY team playing Duke or UNC.
