It's good to see Oregona making their debut in the poll.
i refuse to even consider this a possibility
It's good to see Oregona making their debut in the poll.
Fixed. Just trying to make it so you didn't have to click another link to see the whole poll, so it was fast.
And I appreciate the extra effort. Thanks for the post.
oregon making their debut? not sure where you have been, but they were in the top 15 earlier this year
If we win out though I do not think there is anyway they will be a #1 see over us.
If we win out nobody is going to get a #1 seed over us.
I wouldn't mind being the 2 seed in Gonzaga's bracket if they are a 1. I'd rather play them than any of the other top 8.
I agree with this sentiment. I hope the Zags are in our bracket, whether they as the one seed or us as the one seed. Best draw, IMO.
Would rather not face them on the West Coast though especially as a highly seeded team.
Ditto. I don't know how the "Zags are ranked so high based on such a weak schedule. Their SOS is 66th...behind eleven Big Ten teams (if I counted right).
I was just about to post this. I must be slow.
I was in the right place at the right time I think, hah.
We beat msu and the games we should win. Sets up a possible 1 vs 2 for the big ten championship at the end of the regular season.
It wouldn't be for the Big ten championship or even a share if Indiana doesn't lose before they reach AA.
a game to determine whether Indiana gets the title outright or shares it. And even that requires them losing to Minnesota.
Indiana and State NEED to go down.
We will beat State next Sunday, but we need someone else to trip up Indiana.
At Minnesota could be tricky for them (fingers crossed).
I think OSU at Indiana is going to be the game they get upset. I think they're playing a lot better after getting throttled by Wiscy.
What from UM's past performances convinces you of this? MSU was winning by around 30 for a large chunk of the game. I hope you're right but I don't see UM winning.
We get blown out once and the season is a complete loss? If you watched yesterday, you would have noticed just how important J Morgan is to this team.
I wouldn't try to extrapolate one game's result to the next, for example MSU lost pretty badly @Minnesota and then thumped them at home. Counter-examples to your logic are numerous.
I would say that before our matchup I was confident we'd win at home, after that matchup I was less confident but I think we'll have an answer for them in our own house. Morgan and LaVert both bring excellent defensive elements to this team, so that should help against MSU. Appling has looked terrible in his last two outings as well, so hopefully he continues to be a non-factor for State.
could very well be a bracket buster for a lot of people. I think they are a good team, but not number 2. I would put them between 8-12.
Everybody is a bracket buster this year. Nobody is even close to being an end all, beat all number 1 this year.
The Big ten will have 5-6 teams in the sweet 16 tho and 2-3 in the final four
B1G teams are in the Final Four. Just like the regular season, we're going to beat each other up.
And I didn't mean bracket buster like they'll run the table. I think some people wil expect them to go to the Final Four or better, but I just don't see it.
We're going to have 7 teams in the tourney more than likely. Michigan and Indiana are looking like number 1 seeds right now, so all you need is Ohio, MSU or Wisconsin in one of the other brackets and we have a pretty good shot at 3 in the final four
you mean anything is possible. Cause we all know how the NCAA tourney is chalk to the Final Four.
I'd be shocked if we sent 3 teams to the Final Four. Hell, I'd be surprised if we even had 2. The tournament is so unpredictable and upsets happen every year. There will be at least one Big Ten team that goes home early, probably first round, due to a major upset. It just happens. The conference sure has the talent to send multiple teams to the Final Four, but the odds of it happening, in my opinion, are small. Hard to win that many games in a row against solid competition.
the only time 3 teams from the same conference title had 3 teams in the Final Four was in 1970, which doesn't even really count because they were all independent schools.
3 teams from the Big Ten in the Final Four? It's not going to happen, realistically.
the idea that our talented but young and vulnerable squad is number four may suggest that there is no really superior team in college hoop this year. If Indiana comes on strong at the end they could prove to be that squad, but. Meanwhile, if we finished the year at #4 I would say we had overachieved or at very least performed to expectations.
Do you huff paint?
How funny would it be to see an all big ten final four
I just don't get how Miami is ranked so high. Their win over Duke was impressive, and they have a solid win against MSU. But those are far outweighed by an 8-point loss to Florida Gulf Coast (???), a blowout loss to Arizona, a loss to Indiana State (???), and a blowout loss to Wake Forest. That resume doesn't add up to a top-5 team to me.
for Florida Gulf Coast, and Reggie Johnson was out for Arizona and Indiana State. The Wake loss was obviously bad.
Having those guys out still doesn't excuse those horrible losses.
if say, THJ was out and then McGary?
Reggie Johnson is not even a starter. You don't hear us blaming our losses all on Jordan Morgan being out. At least Morgan is a starter.
I've heard lots of people saying February would have gone differently for Michigan if Morgan had been healthy.
You mean poll results don't make sense? That would never happen! These polls are always flawlessly accurate!
Compared to how the basketball team has been for the past 15 years, with 4 games to go in the regular season this year's team's floor is now a 3-seed. That's pretty damn awesome.
I just did the dump from Pollspeak into my tracker in Excel. The distribution of AP votes is interesting this week -
- 6 votes for 2nd place
- 15 votes for 3rd place
- 22 votes for 4th place
- 12 votes for 5th place
- 4 votes for 6th place
- 2 votes for 7th place
- 1 vote for 8th place
- 2 votes for 9th place
- 1 vote for 10th place
Here is the distribution graphically - last week (Week 16) as well as this week (Week 17, so you can see the shift), and the running average of the rankings:
Great job for Michigan! Can't look ahead, have to take care of business in Happy Valley - Big game this Sunday! Another top ten matchup in the big ten!!!
On another note- La Tech?!?!?! I have to say, a 14-0 record in any conference is impressive, but That doesn't mean it's that good. Yes, they are 24-3, but their losses are Northwestern State, and McNeese State (along with a good loss in Texas A&M). I guess that La Tech @ Denver game to close out the year will be a good one, but I feel like in a head to head competition VCU, Saint Mary's, Colorado State, Akron, and Illinois (the teams behind them) would kill them.
Also with Gonzaga, they are a great team, but I think their ranking is more a byproduct of them not losing and everyone else losing rather than the ranking people actually thinking they are better than some of the teams they are ranked ahead of.
Also, I love the way saint louis is playing. 9 straight wins, with great wins over Butler 2x, VCU, and good wins against Richmond, Dayton, and Carlottle. The Billikins are back!
MSU dropped too far. Should be around 5-7. They're in the midst of the same gauntlet we just went through. Losses to #1 Indiana and at OSU aren't bad.
Miami is too high. Should be around 8-9. They got destroyed by an awful Wake Forest team and they've had extremely fortunate wins before that vs mediocre Clemson and Virginia.
MSU is significantly the highest ranked 6 loss team (okst is next highest at 15). Even with the stacked B1G, I think they are about right.
They get a lot of mileage out of that 'we get no respect' fantasy.
Is that what you're hoping for? I apologize in advance if my sarcasm meter is off today.
MSU loses 2 games in a row, and you think they should only drop from #4 to #5? What are you smoking?
IMO, i was shocked to see MSU still ranked as high as they are! Thoguht they would drop to #10 to #12.
They have played no one. They were beat by a team Michigan has beat twice. I live in Spokane home of the Zags and have watched them more than I have wanted to. I have no idea if they are good or not. If they weren't playing high school teams twice a week I might know.
Their records would be worse by at least 2-4 more losses depending on who they play and who gets skipped in conference play, but I think Florida and Gonzaga can beat the bottom 6 teams in our conference and compete with the others.
OSU would be higher but the polls are not very forgiving after getting smashed by Illinois. Good thing the RPI, BMI and KenPom numbers get a seat at the seeding table. OSU looks like a top 10 team for sure.
This ohio friend of mine would not accept the fact that Michigan would be in the top 5 today.. After ohio beat little bro his head had swelled to enormous proportions. I explained that with Michigan at #6 and #2 Miami losing, accompanied with a little help from his Cbus degenerates, we would surely be in the top 5. His face looked sort of like Vince Young's on the Wonderlick. Surely enough we are there. Now let's win out and take the B1G Tourney!
Granted, I don't think Florida is as good as its ranking, but its still a good team that I think could compete in the B1G. They beat the crap out of Wisconsin earlier this year.
Honestly, how is duke in front of us.
I don't think this is particularly egregious - they have one less loss, played a good non-conference schedule and have been playing pretty well without one of their key players (other than the Miami game which would be equivalent to our State loss). I am sure that being one of the perceived blue bloods doesn't hurt either with at least some of the voters. That being said, If we can win 5 games between now and the start of the NCAA tournament, we should be well placed for a 1 seed regardless of current rankings.
