Michigan #21 in new AP poll

Submitted by Wolverine15 on

With a win over Iowa or MSU, we should be in position to move up even further, even if we split the games this week.

And knowing how these voters can be, watch us going 1-1 against two Top 10 teams this week, only to see us get dropped in the polls next week. Then again, it's 2014 so maybe we'll just go 2-0.

Duke, Coach K and Duke uber-recruit du jour (Parker) will get airtime and recruit mindshare all season, regardless of Duke's ranking. You can't say the same about Michigan.

Weekly rankings are part of name brand, coaching success/brand, and longer-term success. They are obviously not the most important factor, but I wouldn't discount them so offhandedly.

Iowa #10, so chance for back to back Top 10 wins.  Getting one of the next two would be a real coup.  And hey -- turns out Wiscy's B10 schedule might not be as easy as once thought.

I figured they would be closer to #15 but after another 2-0 week there should be a nice spot in the top 10 waiting.  Ohio State and Kentucky are still extremely overrated.

I HATE when Michigan plays at the Breslin, ecspecially before State comes to Crisler. Outside of 2011, I feel like we go into that hornets nest and just get depantsed every time and it completely takes away Michigan's momentum in the rivalry until they come here. The last thing our fan base needs is another reason for State fans to brag.

National media, being the national media, has been making a big fuss about Kansas winning three straight against (overrated) top 25 teams.  Well, we're lined up with a chance to win three straight against teams in the top 10.  I'm pretty sure that's never happened before, so let's hope we make a little bit of college basketball history this week.

Per Pollstalker's report, we actually had votes as high as 14th from a few writers. Joe Rexrode, Seth Davis and Soren Petro ranked us #14. Below that:

- 2 votes for 15th

- 1 vote for 16th

- 3 votes for 17th

- 6 votes for 18th

- 8 votes for 19th

- 18 votes for 20th

- 4 votes for 21st

- 6 votes for 22nd

There was one vote each for 23rd through 25th, and 11 voters left us unranked.

normally play in season, it sort of dresses them up in clothing you aren't used to seeing them in. For example, Iowa is the 10th best team in the country, according to this poll. Really. They are Iowa, and you have to beat them at home. You just have to. Because they are: Iowa, not the 10th ranked team in the country.

It's the same when you play Sparty. You just have to play them like its for everything regardless. Why? Because its Sparty. And this Sparty team doesn't shoot well and doesn't score a lot. It just beats you by trying to keep you from playing your best game. I'm assuming Payne plays Saturday night. But who knows he may not.

I thought Michigan had a good shot at winning the league this year because Payne would leave and MSU would basically be OSU with a backcourt. Next year both those schools will be scrambling to put new floor leaders on task while Michigan should be in great shape depending on whether its core guys stay. But, in either case, the foundation is now being laid. This week's results will speak volumes about the future of this program.

Iowa at 10 seems a bit high, but they're playing well.  A split this week would be fantastic; I have to think trying to win at MSU is going to be quite a bit tougher.

Well they are the number 4 team to Kenpom and outside of a bad loss to Villanova they lost @ Iowa st and @Wisconsin which aren't bad losses at all this season. 10 is about right or maybe too low.  I'm more worried about the Iowa game than the MSU game due to the importance of getting all the home court wins we can.
