I'm sure the playoff committee does take into account how the teams play that week, against that weeks competition. ND sitting on the sideline watching while everyone is playing in top 10 conference championship match ups with the entire nation watching, is an understated disadvantage for them IMO. On top of that, the rules state that non conf champions (and independents) must be unequivocally, one of the best four teams. Now whether this is how they actually rank, idk, but it is explicitly stated in the rules.

AP makes so much more sense, top to bottom, than CFP. ND at 4 in particular is a flat-out joke. But it's about the marquis teams for the CFP, not the four best. I guess shouldn't bother me so much b/c it's also why we're ahead of some 1-loss teams, but ND #4: seriously?! Just a joke

One could argue that the CFP and AP rankings both have their pros and cons. I mean, look at Houston being ranked right behind us in the AP rankings. Houston has literally played no one of quality and that's not an overstatement. They have almost the worst strength of schedule period. The AP is just strictly going by Houston's 9-0 record.

I disagree. I think you're getting caught up in the losses each team has and not conscidering other factors. ND has only lost a close game to Clemson (who almost everyone agrees is the best team), and beat Navy, Temple, and a talented/good USC squad. Meanwhile OKST, Baylor, and Iowa have gone undefeateed against weak or average schedules. Honestly, I don't think Baylor deserves a spot in the top 10 right now.

If what you say is accurate, then why is OSU in the top 4? The term I keep hearing is eye test. So, Iowa, OSU, ND pass the eye test and Stanford does not? It is all very subjective. But I shouldn't complain because M might end up making the playoff, eve though it is a big if, basically because of the eye test. Time will tell.

ND getting love because they're ND. They have exactly one quality win, and that's beating a non power-5 team.

I find it odd that ND is getting rewarded in the same situation that the Big XII is getting punished for. ND has no conference title game, but they'll get the free pass because they're ND. But if OK State or Baylor go undefeated, welp, no conference title game so tough shit for them.

Really good to see the CFP committee isn't afraid to put a 1-loss team over an undefeated. The only way teams will schedule tougher games is for it to actually matter. Otherwise there's incentive to NOT schedule tough games

Is getting into the college play-off really the best thing for us? I mean I would hate to play Bama, Clemson or some other juggernaut of a team to get blown out cause our offense cannot keep pace. And what if we get the defense that showed up at Minnesota? It could get ugly. As much as I would love to get into the play-off, should we be careful of what we ask for? Would we be better off going to a NY6 game against an opponent we can handle? Would that be better image-wise for us? For recruiting? For the smack we all would hear from the haters? I think next year would set up nice for some play-off hopes and chances of winning it all.

better to be the worst of the best than the best of the worst

I think that the defense could hold a Clemson to 20 points and then it would be up to explosive plays from Peppers, Chesson, Darboh and some good field position.

Alabama would be interesting because their QB play isnt great and I would put out D-Line to slow Henry down. However, slowing him down isn't stopping him and we don't have a back that could do the same.

Baylor IMO, would be a fun game to watch, with the defense holding them to 27-31 but the offense could score 40 on them.

If you can look back in time and you already know we lost big in the Playoff, then you would say no, it's better for our progress to make a winnable NY6 bowl instead.

But you can't know that.  You always want a chance at a championship.  Strange things can happen.  The other team could have a key injury, or sleepwalk through the game because they don't take us seriously, or be on the wrong side of some bad refereeing.  Shit happens, and if it does you want to be there to take advantage.

Cuz we might lose and that would leave disappointment.

I'd rather get to the playoff and lose to Bama by 30, then we can say the only reason we were there was HARBAUGH! and when he gets his recruits we will "sail 'ships".

But considering this team is trending to peak next year, the experience of the media circus/ increased intensity of going through the playoff this year would be indespensible.

To be the man, you gotta beat the man.

Also, never take the oppurtunity to play for a championship for granted. Will Michigan be better in subsequent years? Very likely. But they may get upset by MSU next year or the year after, derailing their playoff hopes. OSU isn't going anywhere and will remain a big hurdle on the way to the playoff. Injuries may strike and ruin a dream Michigan season. Harbaugh may leave for the NFL in two, three years. You simpy never know what the future holds, so when the oppurtunity to play for a championship arises, you seize it.

Take your pick:

1) in the playoff with two weeks of intense media scrutiny focused on the maize and blue winged helmet and hearing cRaZy Harbaughisms with three hours of a sub par performance against the Bama 5 star brigade

VS

2) a new years win against Ole Miss in the Chick fil a bowl sqeezed between 5 other games

Go through that dog and pony show this year be ready to have ice in veins next year.

With that logic, why would Alabama go to the playoff. What if their ugly team that lost to Ole Miss show up. I will guarantee you that we will look way better than we did when we last played Alabama. MN played well against OSU. The problem was they were not getting the lucky Breaks, ala 3 INTs we missed, against OSU. You are also forgetting that we brought Speight for most of the second half. We will be fine if we make the playoff, which is a big If.

Could someone explain to me what the committee is thinking? SOS is garbage by every reasonable measure, and the AP, Coaches, and ESPN Power Rankings mirror the eye test, so...?

I love it. We have the chance to beat the #3 and #5 teams in the next 4 weeks. We're sitting at #14, which means that we could potentially catapult to #4 if other things happen

Iowa has two top 25 wins (Northwestern, Wisconsin). Both of these came on the road. The committee values quality wins. Clemson has a top 10 win (ND) and a top 20 win (FSU). Alabama has a top 10 win (LSU) and a top 25 win (Wisconsin). ND has two top 25 wins (Temple, Navy). No other unbeateans (OSU, Baylor, Houston) can touch this. The 1-loss teams that have similar quality wins (LSU, Utah, Michigan State) have all suffered decisive losses or lost to inferior teams. At this point, Iowa has a pretty good resume and deserves its #5 ranking in my opinion.
