Michigan #11 in coaches poll
You can say that again
i'm gonna go ahead and say that's a bit high
I'm gonna go ahead and say that's low. Michigan should never be out of the top 10.
What about Texas? They've done basically everything we've done, why don't they get scrutinized to Top-10?
on the link look at "other" last team getting a vote.
on a 2nd look, then I noticed Duke ahead of the buckeyes.
You are correct; it is a bit too high: but it is great for the program. And who's to say that MIchigan won't earn a top ten slot by the end of the season? We'll know a lot more in the next few weeks, as will the pollsters.
I'm just going to enjoy it for all it's worth right now.
who cares? I would rather be too high than too low or lol, Michigan sucks!
I upvoted your comment because it displays classic idiocy.
I bet you wish you could back to the Big 12 after last night huh? Ouch. You have no defense. How about you go look at the B1G standings and look at whose at the top of the division.
Did you misplace your aggression or are you always this stupid when confronting 'displays of classic idiocy'?
Did you feel the same way about Nebraska when they were ranked 8th? They suck throwing the ball, too, and our defense has actually been better than theirs.
You are fucking dumb.
If the AP and coaches all went on an acid trip tonight, saw the glory of MICH in the universe and revised their polls so that we were ranked #1, it would be nothing but a plus for our program.
Our ranking is important, as there are recruits in this class, as well as in subsequent classes, waiting to see how well Michigan performs this year. Even if we are not a top ten team as far as our ability is concerned, it doesn't matter as long as recruits see, "Michigan is ranked #11? They must be on their way back."
I actually think that's about right and the way it should be (a little more backward looking based on W-Ls than on forward/Vegas projections). It'll take care of itself as long as W-L is the top factor.
FWIW, Sagarin has us at #12 using his RATING metric (#9 using his points-based PREDICTOR). http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt11.htm (still not WELL-CONNECTED).
Wow. Way to high. I think we can beat NW, but honestly, I don't think we can get my MSU. That would be crazy going into the MSU game as a top 10 team which could certainly be possible. Geez.
we were as high as #11? I feel like 2007 before that "thing" happened.
In 2007 before The Horror, we were ranked at 5, before the Wisconsin loss that year we were 13.
Why can't we get past MSU? They haven't played anyone save for ND. OSU is simply not good right now. I think it will be a good game, but I think we can pull it out. They haven't proven anything yet. Of course, neither have we.
Not that we can't beat them; we certainly have a chance. But you don't get to the #1 D in the land, even when the highest ranked O you played that you didn't lose to is ranked only like 96. That D is good. They pressured OSU like none other and played inspired and got off blocks. I'm just not confident enough in Denard's passing to be able to go over the top on them when they bring pressure. Our O-line is going to have to play smart and physical.
Don't forget that OSU still has several players suspended. This offense hasn't been solid all year. I am worried about the MSU game, but beating OSU isn't that big of a deal. Notre Dame is better than OSU...I almost think Western Michigan could beat OSU and if you laugh at that...isn't Western better than Toledo?
I think Western and Toledo are probably gonna play for the MAC title (or the division title; I'm not sure of MAC alignments). Also Temple could win too. But Western could and probably would give them a run.
My analysis was so good it had to be posted twice.
Technically, FAU is an FBS team.
While tOSU managed only 178 yds of total offense against MSU, they also only managed 209 yds versus Miami-FL.
RIght now, tOSU is a bad team. We'll see how they fare now that the suspended players are back, but they need help in the trenches more than at the non-QB skill positions, and they're only getting back a so-so starter in OL Mike Adams & last yr DT reserve Solomon Thomas.
It's incredible to me that in the last few years, Michigan, OSU, Texas, Florida, USC and even others on top of that have either had terrible seasons or seem to be in for one this year.
Yeah msu with their scary offense. No way we can score more than 10 points in a game. Dude we have numbers on our helmets.
Everyone is saying too high, but I honestly haven't seen many other teams outside the top ten that I don't think we can hang with. Another thing we are forgetting is that this team may be for real. We have a good shot at winning the Legends, and if we do that, we should be a fringe top ten team. It is early, but not many other teams have the resume we do.
I think many of us here are worried about the let down we have suffered the last couple of years after strong starts. It hurts less if you stay gaurded. We just have HOke things will work out better this time.
after watching the games the only team that looks better than us in the Big Ten is Wisconsin who we do not play.
We beat ND which pounded MSU which pounded OSU. Neb looks overrrated and beatable.
Purdue Iowa NW all look poor. We could be 12-0 meeting Wisc in the big ten championship.
I like where your heads at son! I will be able to agree with you a little more about the 12-0 thing when we beat Nebraska to go 11-0. I can easily see 9 wins being our floor though.
OK, I think you're getting way ahead of yourself. After the MSU game we will have a much better understanding of how good we are, but until then it's waaaayyyy to early to think about a 12-0. We could also end up 5-7 too. We have no idea how the breaks of a football season are going to treat us.
We can't end up 5-7. Purdue already has conceded the Oct. 29 game to us. As a boilermaker fan, I am just hoping that we can beat Minnesota. Got no chance in hell to beat Michigan.
vs. everything you own that we do NOT lose our last 7 games. This is probably the stupidest thing I've seen written on this blog ... EVER.
Go Blue!
Let's just get to October 22nd perfect before we start talking about our matchup with Wisconsin
That's too high considering we haven't even played a road game yet... but exciting nonetheless.
Congratulations to coach Hoke and the team. They've fought, executed, and played together as a team. They deserve to enjoy the exposure.
To be fair, if Denard can play every game like he did yesterday, then this ranking might be legit.
I honestly thought we'd be sitting around #15. While I'm definitely excited about our team this season, I think #11 is a little high considering we haven't even played on the road yet. If we dominate NW next weekend, then I'll probably think differently. But I'd definitely like to see if our effort on the road can match what it has been at home first.
having Denard, beating ND in a memorable prime-time game, and beating the living crap out of a conference opponent in a shutout. Rankings at this point in the season are pretty meaningless. We'll get a much better picture of where we're at in the next two weeks.
The real test will be for the defense on the road against Persa imo. Clear Northwestern convincingly and maybe we are deserving of that rank.
I really look forward to this game saturday because it is going to be a huge test for this team. A big win will make me feel better that this isn't a 5-0 and then lose the rest of the season team.
Mich better than Florida? No way. We should be in the upper teens still.
Out of curiosity, why Florida? Is it just because of the name? They just got smoked by Alabama and their best win is a ten point victory over Tennessee at home. I wouldn't say they've done anything to be ranked above us.
I don't like being that high. Here is to staying focused and beating Northwestern on the road and going into the MSU game healthy!
I like being ranked that highly. Why? Because it means we're 5-0.
Yea but if Michigan loses to a lesser opponent. All my friends will make fun of me and tell me we were overrated. I don't want this to happen.
This is way high in terms of actual quality of team I think, but as far as resumes go, it's right where we should be. I think we're probably around the 20th best team in the country right now, but respect is nice.
Name 19 better teams...
Seriously, why is everyone so down on our ranking? We beat the one good team we played and we blew out every other team. We haven't looked perfect, so if we were ranked ahead of Stanford or Wisconsin or Alabama I'd agree. But of the teams ranked below us, who is better? Georgia Tech? I doubt it. Nebraska? Not after last night. Auburn? They should have lost to Utah State. We've taken care of business against a schedule that's not that bad. Sure, we played 2 MAC teams and Minny, but we outscored them something like 120-10. Both SDSU and ND are good squads we won both of those as well. Why not put us at 11/12?
Texas is ranked one spot ahead of us and snuck past BYU 17-16 the week before Utah hung 54 on them. Other than BYU they've played Rice, Iowa State and UCLA, none of which seem good. This is one season removed from 5-7.
Arkansas is one behind us, and has beaten TAMU who's probably somewhere around ND in terms of strength. Then they have a twenty-four point loss to Alabama and wins over juggernauts Troy, New Mexico and Missouri State.
I think we belong where we are.
...on many person's minds (MSM and MGoBloggers as well).
I don't think our ranking is too high. It seems OK to me given the first five weeks of NCAA football v2011.
I think much of the "too high" sentiment is based on history of the past two seasons (5-0 start followed by bad things). But, I cannot buy into that thinking. Different years, different teams (both M and the rest of the B1G), and most importantly, different coaching staff. I suppose - given the recent past - it's human nature to be wary at this point, but, to me, it seems irrational.
If a series of bad games is in our future, then we'll drop out of rankings (as we should), but, predicting or expecting that based on 2009 and 2010 is baseless (and using that to inform thinking as to where this M team belongs in the rankings at this point in the 2011 season is equally baseless).
I wonder how they got their 1 vote? Fickell? I would be willing to bet yes.
Should be ranking osu very high in an effort to have fickell keep his job.
Dantonio in an attempt to make them look good for when he attempts to land that job. He needs national recruiting in Columbus too!
It was just a matter of tons of teams ahead of Michigan losing. Are we the 11th best team in the country? Prolly not, but poll rankings factor in equal parts timing and reflection of play...this week certainly illustrates that.
Also...58-0 looks mighty mmmmmmmmmn tasty.
thats high
They are always more based on record and scores than things like how teams actually look, especially early. If we're not that good (and we probably aren't), then it will show later. For now, enjoy the #11 spot and the effect it may have on new recruits. Hopefully a certain RB from Ohio takes notice.
we haven't played anyone else that is ranked. i prefer to see the team earning it, and not just being the objects of a popularity contest.
Who cares about polls. Just win. The goal is to beat ohio and win the B1G. This is Michigan.
fergodsakes
We're ranked higher than Nebraska? Um.
I think we will have the healthier quarterback come November and after what I watched last night the same secondary problems. I'm not ready to bow down to Nebraska just yet.
Did Nebraska look like a top 10 team yesterday?
Agreed it's a bit high but it helps everyone involved in the Big Ten. Lets face it the Big Ten is down right now so any strength of schedule (higher ranked teams) helps every one. Hopefully they over rank some other Big Ten teams because thats our only hope of landing in an important bowl.
I disagree - any important bowl would be drooling to have Michigan regardless of the Big Ten's overall strength. They have an electric QB, an improved defense and crazy fans that will travel anywhere. If Michigan has the wins, they'll be in a big game.
We might be 7 or 8 by the time we get up to East Lansing... makes me a little uncomfortable but I'll take it. IMO we should not be in top 15 until we beat both NW and little bro
This 5-0 team is clearly better than the 2010 version, but i'm not completely sold until we finish these next two games. NW and msu aren't great teams, not better than notre dame imo, but beating them on the road will be a sign that we're officially over the hump.
I thought we would be #12. I didn't think we would jump Arkansas after they beat A&M
Michigan being ranked 11 is no less believable than Boise at 4 if you consider the quality of opponents that they each have faced and the manner in which they executed. In Michigan's case, there has also been improvement each week.
I agree and use this same argument.
Bama, lsu and okla, it doesn't much matter. This year is a mess.
I must say I'm startled by the reaction week after week when the polls are released. The consensus seems to be "Sheesh, that's way too high." Every time. No matter the ranking. Let's be thankful that the coaches of FBS football, who are experienced in what they do (though these are usually GAs voting), think we are deserving of this ranking.
This is OUR team. We are having a GREAT year. Let's not be paranoid that we are ranked too high, but embrace that we have had a great season and others are starting to take note.
This team deserves this ranking. They have gone out week after week and given their all in the name of Michigan. Don't disparage them by kvetching that they are not worthy of the praise they have been given.
Who else had to google "kvetching"?
with a Jewish grandmother.
with a Jewish grandmother.
Good post. It runs against the existential angst that overwhelms this place on occasion.
Has a book been written exposing the AP as a farce, too? They voted us only one spot lower.
If they can more or less repeat that performance against some of the teams to come, that #11 could be the real thing. By this, of course, I mean keeping the opponent's run game in check, bringing pressure and making everyone's D-coordinator say, "WHAAA?" when Vincent Smith, of all people, throws a TD. The next few games will tell undoubtedly.
Sparty is gonna go apeshit. They dropped out all together.
"zomg lol scum is ranked 11th and we're not ranked that's how we like it same as last year we're gonna beat scum 45-7 now lulz"
Meaningless...until end of november
nebraska is overrated imo. Didn't everyone say penn state was gonna come in and dominate the big ten back in 1993? Well not last night. Welcome to the B1G, bitch.
Wisconsin was favored by 10.
who have they beaten that they deserve such a high ranking? are they even better than michigan? how do we know?
i'm just going to appreciate the ranking for now, because while we may or may not end up this high at the end, the fact is that no one else out there has earned it more than us. it's just true.
We all know that rankings this early are just "feel good" rankings and don't mean much. So let's accept the good vibes and stop being paranoid! This is when it's fun!
I'm just thankful we're having a debate on whether we are ranked too high in the polls.
Thanks Brady & staff.
AP has us at 12

A little high but The coaching and the rapid improvement have earned a lot of it
I think teams are a bit afraid to play us at this point. They just dont know quite how to prepare for an offense that is wisely coached and has an innovative coordinator
The defense has shown an ability to improve each weak and make adjustments at game time.
I would hate to have t o devise a game plan against us
Do I think Michigan could play some teams we've passed in the rankings, like Florida, Auburn, South Carolina, or Virginia Tech, and be confident of a win, next week?
Honestly, no. Not at this point in the season.
But we're probably deserving of being the second highest ranked team in the B1G, and we're improving.
Nebraska was only impressive for the first quarter against Wisconsin, and then was exposed. OSU is reeling. MSU isn't dominating this year, and Illinois is playing like they did last year, scoring lots of points in flashes, but also giving up points on defense. Iowa is a good team, but also not an overpowering juggernaut.
One nice thing about our schedule is that instead of playing Sparty the first week after non-con play, we get Northwestern on the road. While that might be a test, it will also be another opportunity to improve before taking on MSU. I tend to think that is a better thing than having a bye week before the MSU game.
We have the ability to win out and make the championship game. Will we capitalize on that ability and do it? Who knows. But it is certainly there for the taking.
That's why I'm not worried about the rankings. Things will take care of themselves.
LSU
Wisconsin
Alabama
Oklahoma
Stanford
Oklahoma State
Clemson
Oregon
Boise State
Arkansas
I would put Michigan at 11, but only because of how poor the quality of teams is this year. It is shocking to see us this high, but if you look at the teams around us, it really doesn't seem that outrageous
Everyone quit complaining about ranking, this is like getting a 90% on a test you didnt study for and being mad because you thought you deserved a worse grade. Take the A- and enjoy it.
