Miami self imposes bowl ban; chances OSU does the same?

Submitted by ish on

Miami decide today to forego a bowl this season: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7261664/miami-hurricanes…

Miami is 6-5 and 3-4 in conference, the same record as OSU.  Foregoing a bowl this year is a pretty transparent attempt to avoid further NCAA penalty when Miami wasn't going to get to a decent bowl anyway.  I wouldn't be surprise to see OSU pull the same stunt.

I think they go to whatever bowl they can get, just for the extra practices. Good way to get a head start on installing the spread. If its still Fickell, I hope they decline. I don't want to watch walrusball again.

The purdue horror, there is a feeling the coaching situation needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. I think if it is Urban, he starts working on at least the offense immediately. If nothing else, it helps keep bollman and the VCR repairman from doing any more damage.

Just doesn't seem logical to me to have their team play in one system all year then practice a new one under a new coach for a couple weeks before a bowl.  Seems like it'd do more harm than good.

That is the herp derpest post I have ever read.

Henne wasn't healthy all year, and neither was Hart.   They were healthy for the bowl game and the offense showed it.  You're crazy if you think RR was doing any coaching at that point.

So, I am going to say that unless they want to fire someone, then hire Meyer and therefore play poker with their cards facing the rest of the table, then probably not.

That I've got, but could a school theoretically fire its whole staff on a Monday and hire a whole new staff on Tuesday?

At this point, if they wanted to hire Meyer and they got him, then they wouldn't be revealing anything. They'd just get a head start on recruiting--especially if they decide not to accept a bowl bid.

Even if they did hire Meyer they wouldn't install a whole new offense for the bowl game, that takes a year.  He would have a staff to assemble, etc.  Any actual schematic changes would have to happen after the season.

I wonder if they would wait until after next weekend though. Something inside me says that they would only consider it if they were certain that Ford Field and the Pizza Bowl were in their future. It would be amusing - in a morbid way - to see them show up to play that one, however. Surely somebody could sneak in the "Post-Tressel Apocalypse" signs?

Their program never did anything wrong. It's all ESPN's fault. They can't believe they have to be punished for their coach protecting his kids. Their compliance department is tops in the country.

Why? Actually, it fits perfect with what OSU does. When they get caught, they punish themselves in the lamest way possible. Failure to monitor? Ok, five lost scholarships over three years. Imposing a ban this year would only make sense coming from them. Financially, they would only lose a little money (Pizza Pizza Bowl payout/12 - Ticket Losses/12), and giving themselves a bowl ban this year in the hopes of avoiding one in future years would certainly help them in recruiting. I just hope if they tried such a bush league stunt the NCAA wouldn't buy it.

Even if they impose one I think the NCAA shouldn't take it and lessen the penalty if they were to levy one against OSU. It is kinda cheating to self-impose one after the season when you know where you are going to rather than at the start of the year when you could go to a great bowl.

I'm sure if OSU were 4-7 right now they would make the announcement that they would be withholding themselves from a bowl because "this was an isolated incident and its the right thing to do"

It's going to be great to watch Paul Dee, ex-Miami AD squirm. He was front and center lecturing USC about extraordinary oversight and compliance for star players following the Reggie Bush matter.  So there we had one player acting alone for his own self-gain with no evidence the school, while with his program we are talking many with the lead bad guy leading the team out of the tunnel at the Orange Bowl on multiple occasions.

hmmmm.

Mr. Dee is a bad bad man and I hope his program gets strung up severely.

Ohio will go beyond Miami. They will ban themselves from both the Big Ten Championship game and the BCS championship game for  this year.

They will also ban their cheerleaders from the first two games of next year.

no joke its hoke

I know I don't. Michigan fans are turning into buckeye fans, always wondering about the other program. I don't give a shit what happens with their coaches, bowls, stadium, recruits,AD or anything else. There cheating ways have been busted and they will go back to being a good program that plays us fair and will beat us from time to time just like we will beat them.

It is a huge story about college football, it should be talked about.  We don't "always" worry about the other program, 98% of the stuff on this blog is still Michigan.  But it's Ohio State week, and it is a major program with major issues.  Yea, I think it is fair to give it a mention.

may leave Miami after this year is over also. To quote the Honorable Marion Barry (oxymoron alert!), referencing Donna Shalala, Miami's president, Al could say..."Bitch set me up!"

I doubt whether OSU would turn down a bowl bid, since Smith would assert that they haven't really done anything wrong to warrant declining an invitation in the first place.

Plus, the extra time spent in bowl practice is valuable just on its own.

Honor and decency will have absolutely nothing to do with their decision whatever it is. They will do whatever they think they can get away with and not look too bad in the eyes of the public or the NCAA. If they actually think they can weasel out of some NCAA sanctions by pulling a stunt like this then, they will do it cause they stand to gain very little from a pizza bowl bid. I think even they are not stupid enough to believe it will make any diff. with NCAA so they will go for the extra practice time and a little $ from the pizza bowl

If I was Al Golden, I'd be pissed. As I understand it, he had no idea that the university was looking into this situation before he was hired, and they made damn sure not to tell him. Now, the university makes a decision to skip the bowl season and he wasn't even involved in the decision making process. They won six games. If I'm him (and assuming he has some type of bowl game bonus) in demanding the bonus. He got railroaded.

that it would be a self-serving and wise move to impose a self-ban.  From what I've seen, the hubris in Columbus will prevent this from happening.  Ohio banning themselves from this post-season is as likely as Dantonio suspending a player from their bowl game.

If I'm OSU, I'd forego the bowl game anyway (focus on recruiting, getting Urban Meyer/Spielman/Herbstreit out from their ESPN contracts, etc.) and not play in some crappy bowl game when there is a near-100% chance the NCAA is going to come down and demand that type of punishment.  Of course, this being OSU, I'm sure they'll count the Meinke Car Bowl as another illustrious game in their storied history.
