You could interpret it as them thinking he is the best candidate to start.

The analysis is fine, but neither offer the insight of a former QB, and it is not better than the UFR that the guys did on this same game.

But it is real football stuff on the board, about an above-average football player joining our team in the fall...which by default makes it one of the better posts in weeks.

He was told he wouldn't start this coming year. If you look at Brian's UFR's, you get the sense that the OC was not calling the best games for Rudock. They telegraphed pass or run way too much in their playcalling.

Also, the OL was terrible in providing protection for Rudock. The big question, of course, is whether or not the OL at Michigan will have really gelled by this Fall. I am truly hoping Glasgow has his act together, that Kalis comes into his own, and that Cole, Magnuson, and Braden are solid. More than that, I hope that we have at least one, maybe two, of the remaining linemen really take a huge jump forward. I'd love to see Tuley-Tillman, Fox, or Kugler really pop and challenge the starters. To my way of thinking, it is critical to add several more OL recruits to the next class.

Back to Rudock, it is hard for me to think he won't start this year. Of course I'd love to see a miracle and for Morris to shock everyone, getting the starting nod and doing a great job. But at the very least, Michigan now has some options. Previously, it was Morris or "oh no!!" Now, at least it is a fight between two potential starters.

BTW, I loved this chalk talk. I could watch stuff like this all day long. Favorite colors, TV shows, etc., not so much. Thanks much for posting!

Ferentz released a depth chart in January listing C.J. Beathard was the #1 QB intimating that there would be no competition for the spot after Beathard's father insinuated his son was considering a transfer.

I'm watching the spring game here and there, and what I am starting to understand is that Morris really does have a great arm.  I never really paid attention to that even though others kept reiterating it, because I was so down on his decision-making that it didn't seem like it mattered.  I think he's accurate enough and the softer touch thing is an acceptable flaw.

He's changing schemes again and that won't help, but if he has any aspirations for starting at Michigan he's got to be buried in the playbook this offseason.  He's got to know his plays cold.  It's clear to me that he gets in trouble when he just doesn't know what he's doing.  Spring game example: drops back and fake pumps left, then immediately throws right.  The play is fake pump and then the guy on the right is the primary receiver.  Throw it to him if he's open.  But Morris is throwing the ball whether the guy's open or not.*  That'll be a pick 6 somewhere.  He just will never get on the field over Rudock if he doesn't improve significantly in that area.  He's got to know the plays cold to have a chance.

Dead horse beaten.

*EDIT: realizing the above sounds overly simplified.  I believe he's auto-throwing to that guy because he's just happy to have remembered the play, have the formation correct, everybody lined up, look over the defense with some idea what they're doing, and get the snap off in time.  He's go to do all those things, then know what his second and third reads are, and adjust depending on what the defense does.  All of this is very difficult.  It's nearly impossible to succeed when you don't have the playbook down cold.

Beaten a little more.

I'm not a quarterback, but I'm guessing lots of those issues result from lack of reps and inexperience.  You can know the plays all you want, but you need to go through thousands of reps before you adjust to the speed of the game and do things without thinking.  He needs time and opportunity, just like any other quarterback.  Everyone around here forgets that he's still only been on the team for two years, with very little actual experience during those two years.

I have never come across a better cross-sport clone to Nuke LaLoosh than Shane Morris.

He will always have the potential to be great because of his arm, but I will never trust him (so long as there is an adequate-to-good alternative) due to his mental capabilities and maturity.

I am sure Shane will benefit worlds from being coached by JH, but I am also sure that he is inferior to Jake Rudock at this stage in the game. If he buys in and works very hard, Shane will have a great chance to start next year (although he will have to fight off the rest of the crowd, which will include a very underrated John O'Korn in 2016). I think Jim is both the best and worst thing to happen to Shane. On one hand he will finally get the best coaching available and possibly be able to round out his game. On the other hand Jim would carry 30 quarterbacks to fight for the one job, if he could, and if Shane's ability to read defenses and understand situations doesn't improve, Harbaugh isn't going to hand him the ball because of his arm - which he too often relies on to fit the ball into a window he shouldn't have thrown into in the first place.

TL;DR: Shane is Nuke LaLoosh, Rudock gon' start.

I really enjoyed the video, thanks for posting.

Rudock looked good, and was making plays/throws we haven't seen since Henne.  It would be interesting to see some video comparing him to the guy who stole the starting job from him, and what went wrong for Rudock before he was benched.  From this game he looks like a pretty darn good QB.

Rudock/the coaches were booed off the field at half time of this game. They ended up losing by two to the eventual divison champs. Rudock then played the whole game against Nebraska that they lost in overtime. Beathard played most of the bowl game in which they were blown out by Tennessee. I don't get it.

The video is decent. It shows both good and bad things Rudock did against Wisconsin. He looks like the best QB on the roster by far right now.

I'm neutral at the moment on the Morris vs. Rudock situation.

I take nothing away from the Spring game. They looked like a bunch of guys on offense who were running clunky plays and didn't really know what each other was doing. That's expected after only a handful of practices in yet another new offensive system. Also, the receivers didn't look like they were used to catching direct, line drive throws.

I'd like to see what Morris can do once the offensive guys become a little more polished in the offense. Hopefully the late summer/fall practices before the season will be enough time to get some of the offensive wheels on the tracks.

I'm confident in whoever starts at Utah.

Very nice breakdown and thanks for sharing this. I remember casually watching this gam but not paying too much attention to Rudock really - this really does highlight some of the strengths that we will be seeing with him on the roster, I would say. The one takeaway that I didn't expect - as others have mentioned - he's pretty good with his feet when he needs to be. I was impressed with that scramble for a good chunk of yards close to the end of the game.

I wasn't that excited about Ruddock when the rumors first started because Iowa had a crappy offense and they seemed to want to move on from a 5th year senior starter which seemed odd if he was any good.  But after reading all the reports I was more bullish on him and convinced that Iowa was just being Iowa in letting him go.

After watching that video I'm even more encouraged, as well as being struck by the fact that is just so damn difficult to play QB at the highest levels.

In any event I think Ruddock raises the floor to 7 wins and he makes 9 wins more likely than it would have been otherwise.

If our defense can be as good as it was last year (and it could be better), then we just need a competent offense to get us to 8 wins.

What's clear is that a healthy Rudock is, at least, a competent QB.  He may not be a game-breaker like Henne or Henson, but he may be able to manage a game and take what the defense gives him.  I do believe we'll struggle vs. great defenses (like OSU) but 9 wins seems plausible, with at least 8 probable with Rudock at the helm.

If Morris beats him for the job, that's a very good sign, IMO.

This is a great idea and I absolutely loved the video and explanation. Based on what I have seen Rudock was good in spots but not too consistent throughout the season. Ironoically I think the Brian Griese comparison is pretty accurate based on size and skill set.
