MGoUsers are amazing - Hope for Pahokee Kickstarter Daily Update (13 days remaining to pledge)

Submitted by Butterfield on

In less than 24 hours, Martavious Odoms' Hope for Pahokee Community Garden Kick Starter has raised approximately $4,000 dollars (from 99 new backers).  It's now nearly at $20,000, with Tae specifiying an ultimate goal of  $35,000.  Since I've been watching, this is the biggest jump the campaign has received in any 24 hour period and I'm pretty sure we can thank the generosity of this community for a large chunk of that.

For those of you who don't know how KickStarter works, it is all or nothing - if the 35k mark isn't achieved, no money will be pledged to Hope for Pahokee as a result of this effort.  So if you have the means and the desire, you can truly make a difference and help out one of our very own at the same time.  Several posters in the previous thread mentioned alternative ways they would try to get the word out and hopefully those will help Tae bring this home as well!

I wanted to post this update mainly to make sure this pledge drive stays near the top of MGoBoard; hopefully having a daily update post won't offend anyone.  If it does, particularly if it offends figures of authority on the site, I apologize and please feel free to remove.

For sure! You never want to see something come so close and not work out, especially for something like this! I will definitely be spreading the word, and I hope others will as well. For what it's worth, I'm just waiting to be paid for this week and then I'll be chipping in. I may be a "poor" college student working my tail off to pay for school and my apartment, but if I can spend $450 to go see Michigan play, then I can certainly chip in to help out this great cause for a Michigan man!

This is a great cause and its awesome to help out someone like Odoms who gave us so much joy/entertainment.  That said, we probably don't need daily updates.  Maybe you could post something later next week and then a day or two before the expiration date?

We have daily updates whenever there is a poll that Michigan is losing. I don't think it's that big of an issue to have something that will actually help a good number of people show up regularly. I only take this stance because if they don't hit their goal then they don't get any of the money.

The thing is, during the season, especially before Big Ten play, there isn't much board material. Look at the board right now, for example. Not many new topics, and most of them are garbage. At least this is something we all care about. I'd rather have a daily Odoms thread than a daily Frank Clark ANGAR thread or a daily look what back up kicker left PennState thread.

for what it's worth, I became a backer today after seeing this thread.  not because it's any better or more informative than the other threads about Tae's kickstarter, just because when I sat down in my office this morning & fired up the laptop, it hit me in the eyeballs & some mysterious combination of factors caused my brain to light up the particular chain of neurons that made me go "hm.  I should donate today."

so I guess my point is, repeated exposure to advertising works.  it may be annoying to some, but as long as it's for a good cause (GO TAE GO!), maybe it's not such a bad thing after all.

What the hell does it matter if there is a post daily regarding the process. Are you that self-centered? Oh you must be, your sig is about as lame and baggy as it gets. Like anybody on this site is moved by the fact you changed your avatar depicting your true profession. An unemployed, sociopathic gamer who's daily interaction with other humans in this world is through Faceback, internet ps3, and mgoblog. Take that frozen philly sub out of your eroding mouth and go take a walk. May the neighbors dog bite you in the ass, clown.

Robot Hustle is the name of the group that supports Odoms in this (the graphics artists that design the gear, etc).  I'm not sure where that group took that name, but the Robot Hustle Crew is the support team and explains that item of clothing.

I've been putting this off for a few weeks but today I'm donating $50 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society in memory of my dad and $25 to Hope for Pahokee.  It's the best way I can think of to spend $75.

Has this been fanposted on any of the SBN Blogs?  I can run off and make an account over there, but I feel it would be better if it came from an established SBN user as opposed to a driveby from a guy who never comments on those blogs.

and be part of an "elite" group of Michigan fans while doing something nice for a community that has shared some its favorite sons with us the last few years.

There will only be about 1,000 of us wearing these shirts to games in Ann Arbor.  Get yours and enjoy the knowledge that you are part of the 1%ers at the games on Saturday.

for a garden plot.  For only $75, I have the opportunity to name one of the garden plots with my family.  I think my daughter wants something like "we love you Tae, and we love Scooby Doo, and Pop Rocks and books."  Although I think that is great, I was leaning towards something more like "mgogarden."

I am really proud of Tae for what he is doing and I am really mgoproud of our little corner of the blogosphere for collectively kickstarting the kickstarter.

Added it to the alumni facebook page, we will see how long it lasts on there or if people start to contribute.

I pledged for the $12 level. I am thinking I will do more. I wish there were tshirts for the Michigan rising one and not just hoodies.

Thanks for your continued persistence in posting this. I didn't donate the first couple of times, but did this time. I encourage anyone who was willing to donate to the HTTV kickstarter to consider donating to this one.

I've donated once, plan to again, and put up a short post with the video and links at another site that loves its gardens. I know it prompted at least one donation from outside the UM football community.

I think it's great that Butterfield keeps reposting this - I think it's important that fans support former players not just on the field but in their future endeavors - especially when they're charitably-focused, as Odoms' is. The effort of people like butterfield has helped Odoms' kickstarter, which will do people good, go from "likely won't be funded" to "probably will be funded" - and I think that's more than worth "cluttering" our precious board - as if the 19th "WHY WON'T BORGES RUN A BUBBLE SCREEN" or the 27th "KATE UPTON BURPED AND IT SOUNDED LIKE GO BLUE" thread does not clutter it.

As noted, Pahokee is the home not just of Odoms, but current players like Brandin Hawthorne, Vincent Smith, and Richard Ash. Helping Odoms take care of the home of so many Michigan players is important.

So, thanks to Butterfield for beating the drum on this, and anyone else who has spread the word.
