MGoPoll // Superstitions // Posbang?

Submitted by mgobaran on

MGoPoll:  I am stuck on if I want to drink tonight or not. I can't correlate my drinking habits to the team winning or losing. I did not drink during SDSU, VCU, Florida or 'Cuse. I did drink (heavily) during Kansas. What I cannot do is start the game not drinking, then begin drinking in the second half. I am 99% positive that is the reason we lost to Indiana at home. (1st half - zero beers and a Michigan lead, 2nd half - 2 beers and Michigan lost).

Up-vote for engaging in ALL OF THE BEERS

Down-vote for a sober night

Speaking of superstitions. What are you doing to secure victory for the boys in blue (or maize) tonight? Sadly, for me, I haven't wore  Michigan related clothing during game day all tourney long. So I will be rocking a plain white t-shirt tonight.

Feel free to posbang if you want. Today is kind of a big deal. Go Blue and Good Luck to our amazing Basketball Team!

I am currently wearing a clean Michigan sweatshirt. When I get home, I will change back into my dirty one that I have worn during all the games this tourney.

I, too, am utilizing wardrobe continuity to give us the maximum probability of victory.  I've worn the same shirt for each of our NCAA tournament games so far.  I accidentally washed it with a bunch of other laundry before the Syracuse game & I was terrified that I screwed us, but everything turned out ok.  In fact, I have watched the games in at least 4 different locations, with various other factors in constant flux - beers drank or not drank, solo or with friends, etc.  I'm starting to think maybe our team is winning because they're talented and well-coached or something ...

Of note:

If it's a big game, I don't sit down at all, I stand in my living room like an idiot.  Sitting is bad luck.

I don't drink my first sip of beer until after kickoff or tip.  If I do, it's bad luck.

If I go for a run the night before I push myself to finish x miles in x minutes.  If I don't, it's bad luck.

If I'm wearing Michigan gear and things are going bad in the game, I remove the gear.  Vice versa if I'm not wearing Michigan gear.  If not, it's bad luck.

On a side note, my wife is due on the 13th of this month.  Precisely what are the odds of her going into labor right before the tip, or God forbid with 5 minutes left in a tight game?

Hospitals have TVs for a reason! My mom went into labor with my sister right before the last post-season game for the Tigers in 1987. (Also the last post-season game the Tigers would be in until the year my sister was out of the country for the majority of the season.) My dad watched the game while my mom was busy laboring. In case you are wondering, yes, they are divorced!

I have a very specific spot in my living room that I will stand in should the game be close.  From that spot, my positive energy is best able to be transmitted through the TV to the players.  But I can't stand there all game or we'll all overload and die.

I will watch no pregame.  I will be alternating between water and diet cherry pepsi (drank too much this weekend).

I'm also wearing my maize and blue striped socks and a yellow and blue (more UCLA'y but the best I could do) tie in the office today.

I stood at the copy machine for five minutes today figuring out what number of copies I could make that included all my students, wouldn't be a jinx, and would bring the greatest amount of good luck.

I wore my 1985 Big Ten championship game t-shirt during the Syracuse game. I'm wearing it today, even though I just worked out in it. Family will just have to live with it.

During football season, if we're losing, I leave the room and have my husband yell in to the other room what's happening. More often than not, we win when I leave.

Instead of a suit to teach an entire roomful of MBAs.

This sweatshirt has been worn for every tournament game and includes some soda stains from VCU at Auburn Hills

I walked down to the bar.  Things continued not to go well and I took a shot of Jameson's.  I don't really drink shots, but if felt right.  We know how it turned out.  Clearly this was not a coincidence and I'll be having Jameson's again tonight if circumstances require.

I have this superstitious thing I do where I sneak into an opposing team's team dinner before a game, and add a little something to the food resulting in severe, but not life-threatening, diahrrea.  It works remarkably well actually, and my teams haven't lost when I stick with this superstition.  I haven't tried it for any UM games yet , but perhaps it's time to break out my version of the 'lucky shirt' for the Wolverines.

Have watched every game since VCU on tape delay. As much as I want to watch live, superstitious behavior wins out, and I will not be starting the game until 45 minutes post-tip

They are the go to rally beer if we ever have a moment of doubt. They have worked thus far against Kansas and Syracuse.

In all sports, I refuse to shave while things are good, so I'm looking a bit raggedy now. For this tourney run, I've also made sure to sit in the same seat of my couch and watch the game on my projector in the same sweatshirt. I also do not drink until after the game ends (it minimizes the projectiles I can use should things go sufficiently bad). If one of my cats decides to jump in my lap at any time, I do nothing to jeopardize the cat going anywhere (this includes cheering excessively or using the bathroom - I've learned to just deal with the situation).

I have a hat with a Wolverine head which I wore to both Final Four games in '89 and the 1998 Rose Bowl. The hat was worn to the Georgia Dome last Saturday night and *will* be worn again tonight!

I haven't had a sip to drink until after any of the games this year, so that'll be the routine tonight.  Have worn a different maize and or blue shirt for each game.

Wear my Michigan football t, my faded m hat, same pair of jeans, sit in the same seat at the same friends house, and drink heavily. I may or may not have an anxiety/compulsive disorder

When Rumeal Robinson went to the line for his NC-clinching free throws in '89 I promised any/all deities that would listen that I would never ask him/her/it for anything Michigan sports-related ever again if only RR made the FTs. Of course he did and it was all Muppets and rainbows and I felt very clever. It seemed like a good idea at the time but now I can't use that again and I'm pissed. I'm watching the game at the same place as I watched the Syracuse game, with the same people sitting in the same seats and of course wearing the same clothes. It's all I got. Go Blue!

Wearing my Charles Woodson jersey, parading it around NOLA an have gotten a few "Go Blues". Must be good luck. I have drank for every game so far and that means one of two things (or both) 1. I'm a raging alcoholic. 2. Me getting wrecked helps Michigan win. We will find out tonight because I'm not drinking.

Typically, when the game is well within hand, I can relax just enough to sit on the center cushion of the sofa just to maintain some perceived karmic balance. If the game is close, I will invariably pace around the family room sofa clockwise and maintain about 18 inches of clearance from all edges and check MGoBlog during media timeouts.

As for gear, I will wear the shirt which I wore for the final five minutes of the Kansas game - a long-sleeve "Michigan" shirt, blue with maize letters (I spilled beer and had to change). Taking that as a sign that the shirt provided a boost, I have also worn this shirt for Florida and Syracuse.

Ill be checking my sports center app every ten to fifteen seconds. Also, if anyone asks me for a favor, I feel obligated to do it. It's a karma thing.

Same grey Michigan shirt and blue block M shorts. Also, my 3 year old will be wearing his Shoelace jersey this evening then his blue block M PJ's for bed. I also stand/sit based on the flow of the game and whatever is working.

I've worn the same Michigan gear for the games but my big superstition is my magical beanie hat that I put on at some point in the 2nd half of the Kansas game. In celebration of the win I threw the hat. I vowed that the hat shall not be touched until right before tip for the Florida game and removed right after the game ends to preserve the magic. I did the same for the Syracuse game and it remains undisturbed. Got to get one more win out of that magical beanie.

Well I had a similar question. I went sober the day of Michigan's first game (for reasons other than bball) and have now gone 3+ weeks without a drop of alcohol. I will be out again tonight at a sports bar to watch the game but am torn on what to do.... Full day pass on sobriety or do I stick it out for the game and have one or two after the game if I feel up to it?

As my username would imply, I live in the beautiful city of Lubbock, TX, where it is currently in the upper 80's outside.  On Saturday, about 45 minutes before tipoff, I realized that I did not own any suitable warm weather Michigan gear.  So, I frantically drove to the mall hoping to find a Hatworld or equivalent that just might have a Michigan hat.  I was not optimistic.  But, I somehow managed to maneuver my way into a prime parking space at the mall, at a time when the mall here is a complete shitshow.  I walked in, and the hat store, by sheer dumb luck, was right next to the entrance I parked at.  As I scanned the racks for a hat, my heart sank as I did not see any Michigan paraphernalia anywhere.  As a last ditch effort, I asked the sales associate if he might have one in the back.  He then reached behind the counter, and pulled out a single, fitted Michigan hat that fit me perfectly.  It was the last one, was on sale previously and was likely going to be shipped back to whatever warehouse it came from.  I wore this hat during the game Saturday, and I plan to wear it during every game from here on out.

My son wears his Burke jersey every game.

My best friend although not a M fan was in Seattle in 89 when they won it and he's in in GA this week for the masters. So I figure he's some kind of good luck charm or something..

Can't really afford to go out, but I have no choice. Same bar I've been at for VCU, Kansas, Syracuse. Same bar I drunkenly offered $300 to open up for my group on Easter Sunday after THE TREY. (They declined, and they're lucky it didn't jinx us)

I have no choice. My wife understands and supports this. I must drink Captain and Coke with a lime and a splash of grenadine, then start two fisting with that and spotted cow for halftime. Then 2nd half is all spotted cow. I'm not quitting smoking until after tonight because this team needs me to step out of that same bar and have a smoke at halftime. Just like VCU/Kansas/Cuse.

I WILL NOT LET THE TEAM OR ANY OF YOU DOWN!!!
